We all know American Idol is a breeding ground for stars and hit makers. They’ve produced three Grammy winners (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson), a bunch more Grammy nominees (Daughtry, Mandisa, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks, Ace Young, Ruben Studdard), an Oscar winner (Hudson) and ACM, CMA, AMA winners galore. Idol has also produced big record sales with Carrie selling the most albums in America (11 million plus to Kelly’s 10.5 million) and Kelly winning internationally (about 20 mill worldwide). When it comes to digital single sales, that’s where Idol has really proved a big stomping ground. Paul Grien’s Chart Watch just did a details story on all the Idol’s digital success brought about by Adam Lambert joining that million selling club with his latest “Whataya Want from Me” the 26th million seller from Idol alumni. Overall, Kelly has the most platinum sellers with 8, followed Carrie and Jordin Sparks with 4 each, then Daughtry with 3 and David Cook with 2. With 1 platinum seller each you can add Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, David
Archuleta, Kellie Pickler, and Elliott Yamin to the list. Now, don’t worry Fantasia, Ruben, Kimberley Locke and Clay Aiken all also have million sellers but theirs with actual physical cd singles that came before the digital explosion. For more on the story, click here.
