One Direction Rules a dreadful VMA’s.

September 10, 2012

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards ratings were down 50 percent and I’m not really surprised. The show was really lackluster with only Pink delivering a killer performance with her latest amazing single “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”. Other performances by Taylor Swift, One Direction, and Rihanna were pretty blah while Green Day and Alicia Keys (featuring gold medal winning Olympian Gaby Douglas) could only muster a little more excitement. And then there was the mess that was 2 Chainz. Aside from that you had egotistical and arrogant winners like Rihanna and her douchebag jerk bf Chris Brown spouting ungrateful speeches or just incoherent ones from the likes of Nicki Minaj (oh dear what is she gonna be like on American Idol next season?)… Speaking of One Direction, they were the big winners with 3 awards while Rihanna took home two including Video of the Year for “We Found Love”. Take a look at all the winners below and head to MTV here for more info on the show and the performances.

The Women of “Idol” wow at the Billboard Awards

May 21, 2012

Last night’s Billboard Awards aired on ABC, but there was a whole lot of Fox going on as three previous winners of American Idol stole the show. Those three women Grammy winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and Grammy nominee Jordin Sparks all gave astounding performances that made everyone else look pretty silly. Kelly did her amazing new single “Dark Side” and it was simply a gorgeous vocal (and she looked wonderful too) while Carrie threw down the gauntlet with a soaring version of her next single “Blown Away”. However, I actually think the best performance of the night belonged to Sparks who tackled the late great Whitney Houston‘s “I Will Always Love You” in a special tribute to her. It was beautiful, powerful and emotional and a fitting tribute to this brilliant lost singer who Sparks will costar with in her final film this summer, Sparkle.
There were other performances of course and I will rank them below, but the night was also about awards as Billboard handed out trophies for the biggest hits, albums and artists of the past year. Adele (who was conspicuously absent and thus all of her wins were off camera) was the big winner with 12 awards including Artist and Album of the Year. LMFAO grabbed 6 awards while Coldplay nabbed 4. For more on the awards show which also featured tributes to Stevie Wonder and the recently passed Queen of Disco Donna Summer and all the winners, head to Billboard here. And check out all the winners below.

Five Reasons to Watch “Five”

October 10, 2011

There aren’t too many amazing original films on basic cable these days. For every great picture like Prayers for Bobby, you get a ton of bunch of woman in jeopardy junk, but Lifetime is offering up another worthy picture for you tonight with Five. Featuring a star-studded cast, lauded directors and a wonderful message, the movie is fantastic and should put Lifetime back in the Emmy race much like it did for Sigourney Weaver and the wonderful Bobby… With that said, here are five reasons you should watch Five tonight on Lifetime.

1. Five has a great, heartwarming, heartbreaking and inspiring story. It chronicles five short films exploring the impact of breast cancer on people’s lives.
2. It features a brilliant award-winning cast including Oscar nominee Patricia Clarkson, Emmy winner Tony Shalboub, Emmy nominees Jeffrey Tambor, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Annie Potts, plus  Rosario Dawson, Lindsey Fonseca, Josh Holloway, Kathy Najimy and Ginnifer Goodwin.
3. It is directed by five distinct and accomplished women~ Emmy winner Jennifer Aniston, Golden Globe nominee Demi Moore, Emmy nominee Patty Jenkins (The Killing, Monster), Penelope Spheeris (Wayne’s World) and Grammy winner Alicia Keyes.
4. It brings awareness to an important cause: breast cancer. And since this is Pinktober, breast cancer awareness month, it’s timely and a wonderful gift to those who fight this terrible disease every day.
5. It’s simply a tremendous film.

So, check it out tonight and here’s a behind the scenes video for you and a trailer for this important film.

Jennifer Hudson wants to know “Where You At?”

January 24, 2011

Oscar, Golden Globe and Grammy winning singer/actress Jennifer Hudson is back. After facing some personal tragedy with the loss of three family members, Hudson is ready for a return to the spotlight with a new album, a rockin’ new body (courtesy of Weight Watchers) and a new film, Winnie, due in the fall. First on tap is her new album, I Remember Me, which drops on March 22. The new record includes collaborations with Ne Yo and Alicia Keyes among others and the first great new single just hit the web. Check out the brand new mommy’s latest “Where You At?” below and for more on Jennifer, head here. (Oh and a side note~ did you see the new opening credits for American Idol? Jennifer is featured alongside two other superstars, Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry, who all didn’t win their season intermixed with pictures from all the winners of the previous seasons. Looks like the producers are finally getting smart and showing all the stars from the show).

2010 Music~ The Year of the Collaboration

December 21, 2010

It you turn on the radio these days, you can’t go a minute without hearing two big artists team up on new song. It seems to be the easiest and best way to get a hit these days. Witness the biggest hits of 2010 and you’ll see collaborations all over the place (Eminem/Rihanna, Jay Z/Alicia Keyes, Beyonce/Lady Gaga) and luckily, most of them, produce some fantastic music. So, here’s my take on the 15 best music collaborations of 2010. Take note that French DJ David Guetta is all over this chart and big new stars B.o.B. and  Bruno Mars makes two appearances as well.

Top 15 Collaborations of 2010:

15. “Billionaire”- Travis McCoy w/Bruno Mars (this top 5 hit was covered on Glee and introduced us to Mars who would later conquer the pop charts with his own hits including the # 1 “Just the Way You Are”)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aRor905cCw

14. “Club Can’t Handle Me”- Flo Rida w/David Guetta (this undeniable dance hit was featured in Step Up 3D and is the first of three Guetta songs on the list)

13. “Gettin’ Over You”- David Guetta & Chris Willis w/Fergie & LMFAO (here’s Guetta again this time with frequent collaborator Willis and Fergie who he worked with on the Black Eye Peas’ The E.N.D. album)

12. “Let it Be”- Jennifer Hudson w/The Roots (one of two songs from the Hope for Haiti telethon, Hudson brought a gorgeous gospel and R&N vibe to this Beatles’ classic)

11. “I Like It”- Enrique Iglesias & Pitbull (Iglesias nabbed his first top ten hit in 8 years with this simple but undeniable dance/pop hit)

10. “Nothin’ on You”- B.o.B. w/Bruno Mars (here’s Mars second song and B.o.B’s first of two entries on the list. It’s a massive smash and a Grammy nominee for Record of the Year to boot!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PTDv_szmL0

9. “Hallelujah”- Justin Timberlake & Matt Morris (on this haunting track from the Hope for Haiti telethon, Timberlake and buddy Morris beautifully tackle Leonard Cohen’s iconic track)

8. “Break Your Heart”- Taio Cruz w/Ludacris (for his first single, Cruz enlisted rapper Ludacris and subsequently, “Heart” became a # 1 hit)

7. “Empire State of Mind”- Jay Z & Alicia Keyes (this song was arguably 2009′s best collaboration and continued to make impressions all year-long)

6. “Commander”- Kelly Rowland w/David Guetta (this is Guetta’s third appearance on the list on the best dance track of 2010 and it’s also a worldwide smash)

5. “Airplanes”- B.o.B. w/Hayley Williams (B.o.B got a little help from Paramore’s Hayley Williams for this megahit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn6-c223DUU

4. “Don’t You Wanna Stay”- Jason Aldean & Kelly Clarkson (this gorgeous ballad is only just starting to fly up the charts and could top this list next year. Aldean wisely asked Clarkson to duet with him to an amazing result and a brilliant vocal from Clarkson)

3. “Love the Way You Lie”- Eminem w/Rihanna (this multiple Grammy nominated # 1 hit was inescapable this summer and fall and is the front-runner to win in several categories at the upcoming ceremony)

2. “California Gurls”- Katy Perry w/Snoop Dogg (here’s another Grammy nominated # 1 smash which was also the song of the summer and cemented Perry as a giant pop star)

1. “Telephone”- Lady Gaga & Beyonce (What happens when you get two of the biggest ladies in the biz together? “Telephone” happens, that’s what. It was a giant hit. It’s a Grammy nominee and have you seen that video? It’s all just too delicious to deny.)
