When the Black Swan met the Sassy Gay Friend…

March 11, 2011

It seems like forever since we’ve had a Black Swan parody. But, no worries, the Sassy Gay Friend is here. Check out the latest hilarious take on the Oscar-winning film. (um, I’m still annoyed by that Natalie. Annette was robbed!)

Sassy Gay Friend Black Swan

The Full List of Oscar Winners

February 28, 2011

Ok, I don’t know about you, but that was certainly one of the worst Oscar shows I’ve seen in decades. It was a big disappointment and rather boring. I’m actually so annoyed, I don’t even know if I want to do a recap of it. Inception also grabbed 4 awards and The Social Network nabbed 3…. Check out your full list of winners below and check back here tomorrow for a recap… if I can muster it… (And yes, I’m still so annoyed that Annette lost again!).

My Big Bold Academy Award WINNER Predictions 2011

February 24, 2011

Ok, they’re finally here: my big bold Academy Award winner predictions… Now, as usual I’m giving you who I think will and should win…. This year, we have several strong races like The Kings Speech and The Social Network for Best Picture and Annette Bening v. Natalie Portman for Best Actress that could go down to the wire. In fact, the race for Best Director and Supporting Actress are seeming more and more unpredictable. Will there be a major surprise? Will The Kings Speech sweep? And will the little categories mess you up in your Oscar pool? (Um, they probably will unfortunately). Nonetheless, I’m making my educated guesses here and trying not to go with my heart. So, take a look at my thoughts below and watch the show on Sunday on ABC with your hosts former nominee Anne Hathaway and current Oscar nominee James Franco!

My Big Bold SAG Award Winner Predictions

January 28, 2011

Ok, enough with Oscar fever, who’s hungry for some SAG sweets?… yeah, I know that makes no sense, but I love me some alliteration, hehe… Anywho, the SAG Awards are this Sunday on TNT and it’s one of the last few big awards shows before the Oscars, and often, they signal a shift in awards voting (only the Independent Spirits and the BAFTAS are left after this). So, does this mean Annette Bening can stomp Natalie Portman in her toe shoe tracks? And can The King’s Speech steal the thunder from The Social Network? I say, yes they both can. Sure, I may be going out on a hopeful limb for Bening, but I think the large SAG voting body may not be as partial to the very divisive Black Swan as the critics groups were. So, we’ll see.
The SAG’s also honor the best in television and we could see some of my favorites like Dexter, Glee, Modern Family and Hot in Cleveland (which I’m appearing on February 9th by the way) take home the statue. So, check out my predictions below and watch the show live on Sunday night…. Also, send me a private email if you wanna know just who I voted for!

My Quick Thoughts on the Oscar Nominations

January 26, 2011

This morning the Academy Award nominations were announced and it was pretty much as we expected with The King’s Speech ruling the roost with 12 nods and garnering more momentum after its Producers Guild Awards win this weekend. (Watch for it to take home the SAG Ensemble and Best Actor award for Colin Firth this weekend too). We also had big nods for The Social Network, The Fighter and Inception. But there were some surprises, snubs and upsets. So, let’s take a quick look at some of my thoughts about this morning’s announcements.

The Good:

~ All the noms for The King’s Speech. It’s my favorite film of the year and I think the one to beat. It has all the momentum now and is a fresher choice for many voters as opposed to The Social Network (which had been on a roll up until last week). I’m currently predicting it will take Picture, Actor (Firth) and Original Screenplay to name a few.

The surprise nomination for Javier Bardem in Best Actor for his brilliant and tortured work in Biutiful… He better thank his good friend and Eat Pray Love costar Julia Roberts for getting him some much needed publicity before voting.

~ The Fighter acting nominations. Melissa Leo, Amy Adams and Christian Bale were on fire in this very entertaining film. Oh, and don’t feel bad for Marky Mark Wahlberg. He got a nomination to as a Producer of the film.

~ Michelle Williams makes it into Best Actress for Blue Valentine. She gave the second best lead female performance of the year (after Annette Bening in The Kids are Alright), so I’m thrilled she defied many prognosticators and is in the race.

~All the love for 127 Hours: for a film that many found hard to watch, it sure did get a lot of nominations and it’s worthy of every one of them!

~John Hawkes and Jackie Weaver: The veteran actor and Australian star both grabbed surprise noms for their fantastic and disturbing work in Winter’s Bone and Animal Kingdom respectively.

~ The noms for The Kids are Alright: I’m thrilled this little indie comedy that could has maintained its deserving place among those honored this year. And Annette (on her fourth try) better beat Ms. Portman. I’m just sayin’!

The Snubs:
Big bad snubs were all around for Mila Kunis (Black Swan), Julianne Moore (The Kids are Alright), Sam Rockwell (Conviction), Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), Robert Duvall (Get Low), Christopher Nolan (director of Inception), Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine), plus no Tangled in Best Animated Feature, no The Town in Best Picture and no Waiting for Superman in Documentary.

The Bad:

~Jeff Bridges in Best Actor: Um, he gives a copy cat performance of his Crazy Heart character in True Grit. While it’s decent, he certainly didn’t deserve a nod over the brilliant Gosling or Duvall or Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version) or Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception)

~Where the heck is “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” (Burlesque) in Best Original Song? The Golden Globe winning ballad by Diane Warren and sung by Cher should’ve grabbed a nom and a win if you ask me.

The Best Director Race: Um, please throw out Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan) and The Coen Brothers (True Grit) and kindly replace them with Danny Boyle (127 Hours) and the egregiously snubbed (yet again) Christopher Nolan (Inception)

~Speaking of Inception, how the hell did it not get a Best Editing nomination?

~Waiting for Superman: not only was the best and one of the most important documentaries of the year (and any year) snubbed in Best Documentary, it’s universally wonderful theme song “Shine” by John Legend was left out of the Best song race… Instead we got another dumb Randy Newman ditty from Toy Story 3. (that’s nothing against that amazing movie though by the way)

~Original Screenplay: They included the atrociously boring Another Year over Blue Valentine? Just heartbreaking… at least Black Swan didn’t make the cut here.

~Um, did I mention Ryan Gosling was robbed????

Ok, that’s enough kvetching… Despite some of those misguided choices, it’s a pretty great list of nominees and we have some real strong races in the Picture (Social Network v. Kings Speech), Actress (Bening v. Portman), Sup. Actor (Rush v. Bale), Sup Actress (Adams v. Leo) and no front-runner for Original Song (I’m currently betting on “I See the Light” from Tangled)…. Also, it’s interesting to note that Black Swan only grabbed 5 mentions which bodes poorly for the film that had been doing so well so far in the race. Perhaps, it’s not as popular with all the voters as one might think. I’m sure Mila Kunis is wondering about that…

Well, now I’d like to hear from you. What are you most happy about and what nods infuriated you the most. Sound off below and get ready for the Oscars on ABC Sunday 2/27 hosted by the nominated James Franco and a previous nominee Anne Hathaway.

A Hilarious Golden Globes Wrap Up

January 19, 2011

Ok, I feel a little bad… I haven’t done one of my usual big awards show wrap ups. I’m sorry, this week is crazy. I’m prepping for a short film shoot that I’m acting in and producing, so I’m a bit all over the place… Anywho, I can’t leave ya’ll without some hilarious commentary… I mean who can forget the ridiculous 80′s shoulder pad dresses that were foolishly on display everywhere at the show? Bad fashions and hair  (ahem, Miss Scarlett Johansson) were, unfortunately, all over the place. At least there were great winners (Colin Firth, Annette Bening, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Glee, Diane Warren, Jim Parsons, Melissa Leo, etc), wonderful speeches (Colfer and Lynch again), a lot of hotness (Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, Zac Efron and Matt Bomer oh my!) and Ricky Gervais going balls to the wall with aggressive hilarity. But for even more in-depth look at the show, check out the post from my friend Johnny Lopez on his blog “The Johnny Lopez”. You might recognize him from the pages of Us Weekly too… um, as a commentator not a drunken naked celebrity people! … So, enjoy and add Johnny’s blog to your favorites too!

Johnny Lopez on the 2011 Golden Globes

Things learned watching the 2011 Golden Globes:

1. Nolan Miller must be dressing Hollywood again because I haven’t seen that many shoulder pads, sequins and sparkle since Dynasty’s Moldavian massacre.
2. I’m going to miss Ricky Gervais.
3. Christina Aguilera needs a water pill.
4. Tilda Swinton and Helena Bonham Carter need a reality show together.
5. With wins by Glee, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch, Jim Parsons, Burlesque, Kids Are All Right, Annette Bening, and Scott Rudin, the Globes were so gay (and I mean that in a great way!) they made the Tonys look like a Yes on 8 rally.
6. Natalie Portman’s laugh will haunt your nightmares.
7. No matter what Sandy says, Scarlett Johansson and Sandra Bullock were kept on opposite ends of the telecast for a reason.
8. “Social Network” will probably win an Oscar, as MySpace gets ready to fold. It’s crazy how things change in 5 years … just ask Jennifer Lopez’s career.

As always, send me your thoughts and comments to thejohnnylopez@gmail.com

Ricky Gervais – Anyone who has the balls to make a joke about closeted Scientologists on national television is ok in my book. That being said, someone let me know if his body surfaces.

Scarlett Johansson – Taylor Swift chic with a Franken-updo. Apparently Ryan Reynolds got to keep all the style in the divorce.

Christian Bale – Completely forgot he’s British. You gotta love a guy who isn’t afraid to have the exact same hairdo as his wife.

Katey Sagal – Peg Bundy looks hot… her dress not so much. Anyone know where her sisters, the “Double Trouble” twins, are?

Julianne Moore – Molly Ringwald wants her “Pretty in Pink” prom dress back.

That guy who played “Carlos’ – hot!

Leighton Meester – Didn’t Crystal Gayle wear the exact same thing to the CMAs in 1974? Country WRONG.

Chris Colfer/Glee – Congrats. Hopefully it really does get better from here.

Eva Longoria – The Anti-Scarlett Johansson … divorce never looked so good. Flawless.

Kevin Bacon – Six degrees of the Social Network …remove Kev’s glasses and he becomes Jesse Eisenberg.

Milla Jovovich – There must be another “Resident Evil” coming out this year because that’s the only time you ever see her.

Steve Buscemi – or John Waters with a weave?

Elizabeth Moss – from Mad Men to the Hillary Clinton biopic.

Christina Hendricks – With her porcelain skin, scarlet hair and huge breasts, Christina managed to find the perfect dress to …blend into the red carpet.

Jennifer Lopez – This is what a triple threat looks like in this economy. Singer/dancer/REALITY SHOW JUDGE!

Diane Warren – What the hell happened to Adam Lambert? I had no clue Diane was in “Party Monster.” Club kid realness!

Trent Reznor – you know Goth is over when even Nine Inch Nails has turned into a frat boy. Head like a a-hole.

Justin Bieber – The original choice to play Annette Bening’s character in “The Kids are All Right.”

Robert Downey Jr – It’s the Globes, not a wedding. Put on a tux.

Annette Bening – She obviously shares a hairstylist with Al Pacino.

Sylvester Stallone – If he keeps it up, his face is going to start looking like Nicole Kidman’s.

Tilda Swinton – Rockin’ the new GapMormon Sister Wives chic … for men.

Al Pacino – Somebody call Jack Kevorkian and put an end to the misery of his endless speech.

Claire Danes – Did she win for playing Temple Grandin or Carol Brady?

Temple Grandin – Can she come to every award show… just because? You know, like Jennifer Love Hewitt does.

Zac Efron – Roids much?

Tina Fey & Steve Carrel – Funnier than “Date Night.”

Chris Hemsworth & Chris Evans – Is it me or is Evans a lot less hot standing next to Hemsworth? Team Thor!

Olivia Wilde – Out of this world. No really. If you squint you can see the Little Dipper.

Jane Fonda – Fresh from a nip/tuck and wearing remnants of Carol Burnett’s Norma Desmond curtain dress.

Matt Bomer – Gay eyes.

Jim Parsons – Gay eyes with a little Mad Magazine’s Alfred E. Neumann.

Melissa Leo – Unrecognizable. Like Zoe Saldana in “Avatar”, no one will know Melissa is the mom in The Fighter. Where were the sisters???

Robert De Niro – No wonder the Fockers sucks, he’s not funny! Gervais gets all the flack but he’s the one who made a lame racist joke. Deport him!

Megan Fox – Sorry but no matter how many gowns and jewels you throw on “4 AM Angelina Jolie,” she still looks like she should be cooking meth in a San Bernardino Super 8.

Halle Berry – The Curious Case of Halle Berry. How does she do it? Half-Black don’t crack either!

Paul Giamatti – Stole the award from my Jake!

Natalie Portman – Forget the win, the dress and the baby, it’s all about the crazy Portman LAUGH. Awkward! I want it to be my ring tone. And she thanked everyone in her cast except … Winona! Stay away from any nail files, Nat.

Winona Ryder – Was not present to pick up her award for best comedic performance by a sometime actress.

Nicole Kidman – the only bump she hasn’t had smoothed over with Botox, Restalyne and plutonium … her baby bump! So much for the return of her face for “Rabbit Hole.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones (CSJ) – CZJ loves her some Astro Turf chic.

Lisa Chodolenko – Her next film should be SINGLE WHITE LESBIAN … starring Annette Bening.

Sandra Bullock – Bitchin’ bangs compliments of the Westminster Kennel Club. Best in show for sure.

Michael Douglas – Forget Laura Linney, he’s the real winner of the big C.

Mila Kunis – Lil CZJ ..if she were at an ‘80s prom in Queens.

Gabourey Sidibe – Her resort wear dress is available at a Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Anne Hathaway – Never mind her new gig on ‘Glee,’ Anne has a lock on playing Fallon Carrington in that new “Dynasty” movie.

Helena Bonham Carter – Rockin’ Emma Samms’ version of Fallon Carrington hair from ‘The Colbys”.

Michelle Williams – Please don’t pick the daisies!

Brad & Angelina – Every time Angelina applies lip gloss a third world baby gets adopted. She looked great, but it’s too bad by the time they made their way on to the red carpet even I was wearing an emerald dress!

Here’s the link again for Johnny’s blog. Enjoy!

My Big Bold Golden Globe WINNER Predictions 2011!

January 13, 2011

So, the big show is on Sunday the 16th and all the stars will be there… But the question is just who will win the coveted Golden GlobeWell, if you’re looking for a little insight, look no further than my big bold Golden Globe Winner Predictions. I’ve got them here for you below! … Now remember, the Globes often like to throw a curveball and give their trophies to stars over more deserving winners and that might happen this year in a couple of categories. They also like to award more of their European brethern than other organizations. They are the Hollywood Foreign Press Association after all, but I think they’ll stay mostly on track with these very competitive races. In fact, the awards race this year is still pretty wide open, so the Globes (and Friday’s Critic’s Choice Awards will likely shed a little light on who may be the big winner come Oscar time). So, take a look at my brilliant predictions below and watch the show hosted by the hilarious Ricky Gervais this Sunday 1/16 at 8pm on NBC.

Natalie Portman, What were you Thinking?

December 11, 2010

Oh, dear, Natalie Portman what is going on in your pretty little head? You’re about to win a bunch of critics awards, grab Golden Globe and Oscar nominations and likely fight in an Oscar death-match for the statue with Annette Bening due to your fierce and amazing performance in the psychological thriller Black Swan. You are the toast of Hollywood, the critics love you and you’ve made good on the promise of your previously Oscar nomm’d and Globe winning performance in Closer…. So, why oh why do you have two dreadful movies and one potentially really bad film on the way? Sure, they are all commercial, but you can’t tell me the scripts for the upcoming romantic comedy No Strings Attached and the juvenile comedy Your Highness really seemed that good. Can you? If so, I sure hope they’re better than the terrible trailers for both films co-starring box office poison Ashton Kutcher (Strings) and comedy dim bulb Danny McBride (Highness). I’ll at least give you some slack for Highness because it stars soon to be Oscar nomm’d James Franco (but we all know he makes lots of wacky decisions~ hello General Hospital)…. AS for the upcoming tent pole action pic Thor, I have to think you are just getting a giant paycheck and that your agents pushed you into that one. Or maybe you just wanted to have fun doing a comic book picture with a ridiculously hot Australian (Chris Hemsworth) and Hannibal Lecter (Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins). Whatever the case, the trailer for that one looks pretty underwhelming too…. So, Natalie, please let me know just what you were thinking and help me understand these choices… And hopefully, all the pics will be better than their first trailers. Take a look at all three pics heading your way in 2011 and watch Natalie all over the awards circuit this winter for her current film Black Swan.

Halle Berry goes Crazy for Oscar

December 1, 2010

She won an Oscar for her dramatic and emotional work in Monster’s Ball and now, Halle Berry, is aiming for a bookend. In her new film, Frankie & Alice, which she co-produced, Berry plays a woman struggling with multiple personality disorder. Judging from the trailer for this psychological thriller, Berry looks like she will be a strong contender for this year’s race. Unfortunately, it’s perhaps the most crowded Best Actress race in history (or at least in the last few decades). You see you have front-runners Annette Bening (The Kids are Alright), Julianne Moore (The Kids Are Alright), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) and Natalie Portman (Black Swan) to contend with. Then comes another tier of deserving ladies including Lesley Manville (Another Year), Hilary Swank (Conviction), Diane Lane (Secretariat), Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham) along with wild cards Tilda Swinton (I Am Love), Naomi Watts (Fair Game), and Reese Witherspoon (How Do You Know?). We’ll see how Halle fairs in the weeks ahead as the film hits theatres in late December. I think she’s a lock for a Golden Globe Drama nom, but may slip through the cracks at Oscar time unless she does some serious campaigning (which she’s already doing). Take a look at Halle in the new trailer for Frankie & Alice below and let me know if you think she can break into the Best Actress race this year.
