“The Avengers” Lords Over the MTV Movie Awards

April 17, 2013

imagesSunday night was all about some super heroes and a super silly lady as The Avengers took home 3 awards including Movie of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards while host Rebel Wilson won two statues. Wilson and her Pitch Perfect cohorts not only performed on the show but they won Musical Moment over Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Wilson took home the Breakthrough Award. The other big winner of the night was Silver Linings Playbook which landed three awards including Actor and Actress for Bradley Cooper and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence… I have to say I was a bit dismayed that the brilliant films Les Miserables, Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Dark Knight Rises all went home empty-handed, but hey, I’ll admit I’m a bit older than the MTV voting demographic unfortunately, lol … For more on the show and the awards, head to the MTV site here and take a look at all the winners below.

“42″ Scores at the Box Office

April 17, 2013

42-2013-Movie-Poster-300x444Over the weekend, the new baseball movie 42 scored big with a much higher than anticipated $ 27.4 million. The film about baseball great Jackie Robinson starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford was a crowd pleaser (I gave it a solid “B” grade) and it easily defeated the underwhelming debut of Scary Movie 5 which only took in $14 million. Looks like that franchise is finally out of steam. The Croods held up well in its fourth week while Evil Dead plummeted 63 % in its second week. For more on their totals and all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo. Then check out the new top ten below which also features the Ryan Gosling/Bradley Cooper indie The Place Beyond the Pines making its first appearance in the top-tier after expanding to just over 500 theaters.

Who’s Ready for Another “Hangover?”

April 11, 2013

Like many other moviegoers, I thought The Hangover Part II was a bit of a disappointment. Sure, it was funny, but it was derivative and lost a lot of the fun flair of the original. That said, it was a giant hit and, of course, a third film was greenlit. Now the final film in the trilogy, The Hangover Part III, is set to hit theaters on Memorial Day weekend and the first full length trailer just hit the web. From one quick viewing, I have to say I am pleasantly surprised and a little excited. It looks like they may turn things around for the franchise with a hilarious finale. All of the usual suspects are back including Zach Galifinakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and recent Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper plus Heather Graham, Melissa McCarthy and the brilliant John Goodman. Check out the shenanigans when the film opens May 24th and take a look at the new trailer below. Are you ready for another Hangover?

The Critics Choice Award Nominations Love Them Some “Lincoln”

December 11, 2012

lincoln-2Steven Speilbergs fantastic Oscar bait drama Lincoln has gotten great reviews and is a hit at the box office, and now it’s the favorite of this morning’s Critic’s Choice Award Nominations. The film nabbed a record 13 nominations ahead of Les Miserables which is up for 11 Awards. All the usual suspects are up for Best Picture including the aforementioned two films alongside Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained, The Master, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Moonrise Kingdom, Argo, Life of Pi and Silver Linings Playbook (which grabbed 10 nominations)…. The show which airs in January on the CW added a few new categories this year including Best SciFi/Horror Movie and Best Actor & Actress in a Comedy Film and an Action Film so there are a lot more nominees. It also gave a quadruple dose of love to nominated actress Jennifer Lawrence (Best Actress, Best Actress in a Comedy, Best Ensemble, Actress in an Action Film). Picking up 3 nods each were Bradley Cooper (Best Actor, Best Actor in a Comedy, Best Ensemble), Anne Hathaway (Best Supporting Actress, Best Actress in an Action Film, Best Ensemble) and Judi Dench (Best Supporting Actress/Best Actress in an Action Film, Best Ensemble) and a double dose of individual love went to Quevanzhane Wallis (Best Actress, Best Younger Actor/Actress)… Some big snubs in the acting categories included Samantha Barks and Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables), Maggie Smith (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel), Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren (Hitchcock), Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained), Jackie Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), Ewan MacGregor (The Impossible) and Keira Knightley (Anna Karenina). So, just who did get nominated? Take a look below and head here for more on the Critics Choice nominations… Plus I have to give a shout out to the nominations for The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Skyfall, two of my favorites from the year that are turning into serious awards players.

“The Words” Tanks on a Terrible Weekend at the Box Office

September 10, 2012

This weekend marked the worst weekend at the box office of the year with only one major opener, The Words, which tanked big time with only $5 million. Looks like the Bradley Cooper drama will be another money loser for CBS films and give studios pause as to whether Cooper can really carry a film. We will see later this year with his Oscar bait film The Silver Linings Playbook co-starring Jennifer Lawrence which debuted to raves at the Toronto Film Festival a few days ago… Back to the Box Office, the horror film The Possession stayed on top with a low $9 million. For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

Are you ready for another Hangover?

April 1, 2011

The Hangover was the surprise comedy smash of 2009 making stars out of Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifinakis. Now, the sequel, appropriately titled The Hangover Part 2, hits theatres on May 26th reuniting Cooper, Galifinakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Ken Jeong for more debaucherous fun. Check out the first trailer with some serious monkey business going on below.

Limitless leads a Lackluster Weekend

March 20, 2011

Perhaps it was the rain, the impending war, or March Madness that made is such a lackluster weekend at the Box Office. However, I blame the lackluster new releases for another down weekend at the movies. Opening best of the three new entries was Bradley Cooper’s ridiculous “take a pill and all your problems will be solved” drama Limitless (my grade: C) which took in a decent $19 million holding off Rango in its third week and Battle LA which dropped a big 59% in week two. Coming in fourth was the best reviewed film of the new movies, Matthew McConaughy’s The Lincoln Lawyer, (I’m seeing it later today and will update my grade later) which grabbed $13.4 million while the utterly dreadful homophobic offensive and plain unfunny new “comedy” Paul (my grade: F) rounded out the top five with $13.1 million…. There was good news farther down the chart as the wonderful art house release Jane Eyre (my grade: A-) which grabbed a big per screen average ($18,385) to land in the top 20 despite only being in 26 theatres…. For more numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here, and check out the new top ten below.

Jane Eyre is the First Good Movie of 2011

March 11, 2011

So far this year, I have not wanted to go to the movies at all. There has been so much dreck (The Dilema, Drive Angry, Just Go With It) offered up, I have only seen a couple of films and those were for free. First was a screening of The Adjustment Bureau that was just a muddled sci-fi romance thriller mess that was saved by the appealing performances of its leads Matt Damon and Emily Blunt (Grade: B-). Next, I saw every studio executive’s wish fulfilment fantasy drama Limitless that basically says drugs are good and you don’t have any consequences if you’re a bad guy as pretty as Bradley Cooper (Grade: C). And finally, I somehow sat through the awful, moronic, homophobic and most importantly, not funny, “comedy” Paul that just made me plain angry. (Grade: D-)….

So thank goodness, I finally got to see a good film when I went to a screening of the lovely Jane Eyre on Wed night. This latest update of the Charlotte Bronte literary classic stars the incandescent Mia Wasakowska (The Kids are Alright, Alice in Wonderland) as the titular character who survives a difficult childhood to become the governess for a rich, dashing and brooding man played with great heat and heart by Inglorious Basterd’s Michael Fassbender. From there, you have an epic romance full of tragic mysteries, class struggles, and female empowerment. The film is wonderfully and skillfully rendered by director Cary Fukanaga who also directed the dark and fantastic film Sin Nombre. All of the elements are great from the sweeping score by Dario Marianelli to the gorgeous cinematography by Adriano Goldman and the wonderful supporting performances by Sally Hawkins, Jamie Bell and Oscar winner Judi Dench. But the film belongs to Wasakowska who gives the first award worthy performance of the year. She displays so many layers of vulnerability, strength, intelligence and yearning that you’re always completely engaged and enamored by her. I actually wished the film had been a tad longer because it felt a bit rushed condensing all of the material from the book into two hours. Regardless, I highly recommend the film as the first good movie of 2011. (Grade: A-) Jane Eyre hits theatres tomorrow.

The Twi-hards own the MTV Movie Awards… and Xtina!

June 7, 2010

Last night was all about Twilight at the MTV Movie Awards where the sequel, Twilight: New Moon, swept the outrageous awards show for the second year in a row. On the one hand, it should be no surprise that it won everything because the Twi-tards are crazy obsessive in their support for this franchise, but it’s still rather annoying that the iminently unlikable and untalented Kristen Stewart wins best actress for it over Oscar winner Sandra Bullock. At least, Bullock picked up the “Generation Award” for her work. She also gave a great speech and received some plaudits from her funny costars Betty White and Bradley Cooper. Oh, and yeah, she kissed Scarlett Johanson, yada yada…. I guess it’s also interesting to note that New Moon demolished Avatar beating it in all of its categories. Apparently the all time highest grossing movie isn’t so loved after all. (And um, if you look at attendance numbers it is no where near being the most successful movie ever. It lags far behind Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, E.T. and others.) The show also featured comedian Aziz Ansari giving it his best shot as host. Unfortunately the hilarious star of Parks and Recreation suffered the fate of most hosts of this show: having to perform to a somewhat indifferent audience who wasn’t listening. We also got a lot of stupid comedy bits from the likes of Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Adam Sandler and his buddies and a terrible dance number from Tom Cruise (as his Tropic Thunder alter ego) with J Lo. I guess most of the audience was amused by the last one. Me, not so much. I did enjoy Christina Aguilera’s no holds barred performance though and Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry (who sang some of her song live even) were decent. For all of the info on the show, check out MTV’s website. Your full list of winners is below:

Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart (New Moon)
