Even a Magnificent Prince Can’t Save the Dreadful Lip Synch, I mean Billboard Music Awards

May 20, 2013

prince-billboard-music-awards-2013-performance-videoWhat the hell Billboard? You represent the most popular music, songs and acts in the nation and you honor them with a show full of lip synching pop tarts? (Yes, I’m talking bout you Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and the incredibly whiny Justin Bieber). Seriously, it was the worst Billboard Awards show in history. Only a handful of acts actually sang live~ thank you Kasey Musgraves, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheerhan. And only the magnificent one, Prince, had a true standout performance. The legend who received the Billboard Icon Award seriously schooled all of the other acts. For an indepth look at my reaction to the Billboard Music Awards, head to my hilarious Twitter feed here.
In terms of the awards, which honored the biggest selling artists, singles, albums and most played songs, the big winners were Swift, Bieber, One Direction, Adele, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Gotye, Nicki Minaj, and Madonna who took home 3 awards and made quite an entrance to accept the award…. For more on the show and the winners, head to Billboard here. Then, scroll down for all the winners below.

Justin is Still on Top of the Charts

April 7, 2013

imagesJustin Timberlake continues his banner year in 2013 with a second week atop the Billboard 200 album chart with The 20/20 Experience. The Grammy winners sold another 318,000 copies last week to bring his two-week total to 1.29 million making it the only album to top a million units this year. I think Timberlake will be a big Grammy contender for this record next year not to mention I’m sure he’ll grab another Emmy nomination for his recent Saturday Night Live hosting gig… He also holds off a barrage of debuts from Lil Wayne, Blake Shelton, OneRepublic, Alan Jackson, Depeche Mode and The Strokes. Take a look at where all the albums landed below and head to Billboard for more on the charts here.

They previously hit # 15 with their long running hit “It’s Time”. Also making an auspicious debut is newcomer and Victorious star Ariana Grande who comes out of nowhere to debut in the top ten with her first single The Way”. Justin Timberlake is Back on Top in a Big Way

March 28, 2013

2020EXPERIENCEGrammy winner Justin Timberlake makes a huge impression with his third album as The 20/20 Experience overperformed even the most optimistic projects with 968,000 copies sold to land him his second # 1 album on the Billboard charts. That’s the biggest debut of 2013, Justin’s best-selling week ever and the biggest debut since Taylor Swift’s Red. With 452,000 of those units sold digitally, it was also the 3rd biggest digital debut in history following Swift and Lady Gaga. Not only is he killing it on the album charts, but JT’s latest single “Mirrors” flies up to a new peak of # 13 while his first single from the album, “Suit & Tie” also grabs a new peak of # 3…. But Timberlake was not the only debuting artist this week as Nashville Star vet Kasey Musgraves starts big at # 2 with Same Trailer Different Park while Imagine Dragons, P!nk and the Les Miserables soundtrack returns to the upper frame. March 11, 2013

brunoThe “B” boys are at the top of the Billboard Charts this week as Baauer and Bruno Mars lead the Hot 100 Singles and Top 200 Albums Lists with “Harlem Shake” and Unorthodox Jukebox. For the viral phenom Baauer, that makes three weeks on top while Bruno hits the top for the first time in his career as his second album ascends from # 2 to # 1 after 12 weeks in release. Mars holds off debuts from two groups I’ve never heard of called Atoms for Peace and Hilsong United (does that mean I’m getting old?) while getting a boost from cheaper pricing at Amazon. Take a look at the new top ten which also features a return from Adele below.

Bruno Mars Grabs Hold of the Charts

March 3, 2013

Bruno Mars could be the Adele of 2013 as the artist who utterly dominates a year like the British Grammy winner Adele did in both 2011 and 2012. He already spent 6 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Locked Out of Heaven”, and now his new single “When I Was Your Man” is close to hitting the top as well. This week “Man” leaps up from #8 to # 3 while “Heaven” is still hanging strong at # 9. Mars second album which features both songs, Unorthodox Jukebox, also revisits its peak position at # 2 this week and should hit the top next week. Keeping him from the summit are Mumford & Sons still basking in the afterglow of their Grammy victories…. Take a look at both the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and the Hot 100 Singles chart below. (And PS~ yes, Baauer‘s “Harlem Shake” crap phenomenon still rules the latter chart since Billboard bastardized the chart by adding in youtube views which is absolutely ludicrous and is no true value of a song’s popularity. I mean, what’s next? “A Doggie Flushes the Toilet” video hitting the top ten? Argh).

Top Ten Albums on the Hot 100:
1. Babel- Mumford & Sons (last week~ 1)
2. Unorthodox Jukebox- Bruno Mars (lw~ 3)
3. All That Echoes- Josh Groban (lw~ 5)
4. Now 45- Various Artists (lw~8)

8. Some Nights- fun. (lw~ 7)
9. Unapologetic- Rihanna (lw~ 15)
10. Red- Taylor Swift (lw~ 4)

Top Ten Singles on the Hot 100:
1. “Harlem Shake”- Baauer (lw~ 1)
2. “Thrift Shop”- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (lw~ 2)
3. “When I Was Your Man”- Bruno Mars (lw~8)
4. “I Knew You Were Trouble”- Taylor Swift (lw~ 5)
5. “Scream & Shout”- Will.I.Am w/Britney Spears (lw~ 4)

M_JoshGrobanArtwork“Popera” crooner and a former Grammy nominee Josh Groban grabbed his third # 1 album this week as his fifth release, All That Echoes, debuted on top with 145,000 copies on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. That easily held off new releases from Tim McGraw, rock bands Red and Coheed & Cambria and the latest Now! compilation. Watch for a big shake up next week with the Grammy Awards causing a lot of albums to get big boosts like Album of the Year winners Mumford & Sons who already climb back up four notches. For now, check out the new top ten below.

Top Ten Albums on the Billboard 200:
1. All that Echoes- Josh Groban (debut)
2. Two Lanes of Freedom- Tim McGraw (debut)
3. Now 45- Various Artists (debut)
4. Babel- Mumford & Sons (last week~ 7)
5. Passione- Andrea Bocelli (lw~ 2)

And here’s the video for Josh Groban’s first single from All That Echoes,” Brave” which just hit the top 20 on the AC charts.

Over on the Hot 100, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis make it four weeks on top with “Thrift Shop” while a bunch of songs enter the top-tier. Justin Timberlake‘s “Suit & Tie” gets a Grammy boost and returns to # 8 while Maroon 5 grabs their third consecutive top ten single from their Overexposed album with “Daylight” and Bruno Mars‘ second single from Unorthodox Jukebox, “When I Was Your Man” joins his former # 1 “Locked Out of Heaven”. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Take “Thrift Shop” to the Top of the Charts

January 23, 2013

macklemore_0It’s been quite awhile since a bona-fide rap song hit # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and I’m pretty sure none of them have been about shopping for discount clothes. We’ll see how long this hysterical and catchy record reigns as it will have to fight off Justin Timberlake’s latest “Suit & Tie” which charges up from # 84 to # 4 in its first full week of release and becomes his 12th top ten solo hit on the Hot 100. For more on both of these songs and their chart accomplishments, head to Billboard here. And check out the new top ten below.
