Sorry for the delay on my post about the biggest hits in music this week, but I’ve been dealing with some “real” work stuff as my short comedy Dirty Talkcontinues across the festival circuit. (We just played Boston and won the Audience Award at the Miami LGBT Film Fest!!) … But back to the music world, Grammy winner Michael Buble nabs his fourth # 1 album as To Be Loved debuts atop the Billboard200 Albums chart. He holds off fellow Grammy winner and American Idol winner Fantasia who lands at # 2 with Side Effects of You, her third top ten album and second # 1 R&B Album. Also debuting in the top ten are alt-rockers Phoenix, metal head Rob Zombie and Will.I.Am with a slightly disappointing #9 debut for his latest. She fends off a strong charge by Macklmore & Ryan Lewis and will have to face some new competition by Swedish dance duo Icona Pop who charge into the top ten with their fist top ten hit “I Love It”. I am headed out-of-town again for another screening of our great short Dirty Talk. Now, we are headed to Sacramento for SIGLFF, the Sacramento International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival. We premiere there Saturday night Oct. 13 in the Shorts Program at 7:30pm at the Crest Theatre. Head to the SIGLFF website or the Dirty Talkwebsite for tickets and more info…. And if you’re in Sacramento, come to the screening and say hi to me and Dirty Talk director/writer/producer/star Jeff Sumner.
From one film festival to the next, I am all over the place! Last weekend, the hilarious short I co-produced and starred in, Dirty Talk, had its premiere at the Cinema Diverse Palm Springs International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and this weekend, the first short I co-produced and starred in, the things i cannot change, will be having its New York premiere at the Reel Recovery Film Festival. I’ve got you covered with comedy and drama from coast to coast! things is a wonderful and emotional dramatic short written and directed by my friend and a recent New York transplant, playwright Chris Phillips starring myself (Jason Boegh) and the brilliant Cory Schneider. The film explores the lives of a recently deceased drug addict’s ex-lover and best friend who unexpectedly collide in a heated confrontation. Old grievances are aired and blame is tossed about like a weapon as the two come to grips with losing the man they both loved. things was adapted from Phillips’ GLAAD Award nominated play revolver. It’s a very personal film for all of those involved and I really hope you get a chance to see it.
All of the screening information is below. We will also be playing the Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale editions of the Reel Recovery Festival this fall. For more on Reel Recovery Film Festival (born from the Writers in Treatment group) which focuses on films that deal with addiction, alcoholism, recovery, and treatment etc, head here. As a lot of you readers know, I produced and co-starred in my second short film this year, Dirty Talk. We wrapped the shoot for the hilarious comedy in June and we are now starting our film festival journey. I’m thrilled to announce we will be having our official world premiere at the Cinema Diverse Palm Springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festivalon Sunday September 23rd at 7pm. We will be showing before the new romantic comedy Love or Whatever, so you will be getting two great gay comedies for the price of one. So, if you are in the Palm Springs area or just want to take a trip out to the desert during the festival from Sept. 20-23, grab a ticket to see our film debut. You will be the first public audience to see it aside form a select few at our cast/crew/donor preview a few weeks ago and I think you will have a fantastic time. Take a look at the info about our film Dirty Talk below and head to the Cinema Diverse website here for more information and tickets.
Dirty Talk was written and directed by Jeff Sumner(Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) who also co-produced the film alongside Jason Boegh (Scandal, Hot in Cleveland, Parks & Recreation, The Middle) and Harrison Bloom with music by Michael Teoli, cinematography by Jorge Luis Urbina and was edited by David Neuendorff. The film tells the story of Nathan (Sumner) a conservative English teacher who tells his best friend Zach (Boegh) about a crazy one night stand with a hot Latin man (Claude Knowlton of The Closer and The LWord) who takes him out of his comfort zone. The hilarious Ralph Cole Jr.(Two and A Half Men, Dexter, Desperate Housewives) also stars as a sassy waiter while Jeffrey Christopher Todd (Free Agents, Switched at Birth) plays Pip the cocktail boy.
Learn more about Dirty Talk at our website and become a fan of Dirty Talk on Facebook and Twitter. Spread the word and watch our film traverse the country this fall and into next year. We will also be playing Atlanta’s Out on Film Festival the first week of October and another festival we can’t name quite yet. Watch the website, Facebook and my blog here for more updates about screenings, and thanks so much for your support!!!
And here’s a little taste of Dirty Talk to get you in the mood. Hope to see you in Palm Springs!!!
The best pageant of the year is back. I’m talking about the hilarious, irreverent and ridiculously entertaining Best in Dragcompetition that returns to the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles this October 7th. The show, which pits drag queens against one another as they battle for the crown in traditional categories like bathing suit, talent and evening gown, is also a fundraiser for Aid For Aidsand they have raised tons of money for this wonderful cause over the years…. The show also features a host of guest celebrity judges (past attendees include Vanessa Williams, Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Holland Taylor, Camryn Manheim, and even Charlie Sheen) plus Kathy Griffin opens the show. I have worked on the show for several years and it is a wonderful and moving experience, not to mention a laugh riot. Tickets are on sale now. Head to the Best in Drag website herefor all the information. You can also find info on Twitter and Facebook, and check out their great promotional video below edited by my friend (and my Dirty Talk film editor) David Neuendorff.
So, my life has become a little busy and I’ve been unable to blog with as much regularity as I like. While it’s good because that means I’m working on lots of other great projects like the two web series I’m doing, Sammy Kingsford: Manager to the Stars and The Adventures of Velvet Prozakand my short film Dirty Talk, it’s a little bit of a bummer because I am not giving you my great So You Think You Can Dancerecaps on time! … Alas, I apologize and am giving you a brief quick wrap today… This year the show is looking for both a guy and girl winner and will only be airing once a week with eliminations at the end of the show as chosen by the judges after America votes. The judges will choose between America’s lowest vote getters and next week’s first elimination will say goodbye to two guys and two girls… So, who’s in danger? Let’s rank the performances…
SYTYCD Quick Wrap Rankings from 7/11/13
1. Audrey & Matthew- Contemporary: this routine by Travis Wall was simply stunning. 2. Lindsay & Cole- Paso Doble: I agree with Mary this might have been the best Paso ever on the show and Cole destroyed it! 3. Tiffany & George- Contemporary: a beautiful and romantic piece by Sonya 4. Janelle & Dareian- African Jazz- totally awesome… these two could end up being a power couple 5. Amelia & Will- Hip Hop (Character Pop): easily one of the most entertaining of the night, even if it seemed like easy choreography. And I didn’t despise her as much as usual! 6. Alexa & Daniel- Jazz: while American may not understand this number, these two are incredible technicians and Daniel is adorbs. 7. Eliana & Cyrus- Broadway: sure it was very entertaining but there wasn’t much skill on display if you ask me. Tyce totally made it easy for Cyrus… .Eliana is brilliant though. 8. Witney & Chehon- Samba: she totally schooled him in this number, but I hope his hotness keeps him in contention. 9. Amber & Nick- Vienesse Waltz: it was nice, but forgettable in the end 10. Janaya & Brandon- Hip Hop: I appreciated this attempt at a relationship in dire straits due to alcoholism, but it just didn’t quite connect the way it could’ve.
So, there ya have it. My first quick take on this season’s So You Think You Can Dance. Watch the show next week for the first eliminations. Who are your favorites and will they make it? My current favorites are Matthew, Eliana, Daniel and Janelle. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for them next week on SYTYCD Wednesday on Fox. And P.S. how much have we missed the brilliant and beautiful host of SYTYCDCat Deeley. She better get another Emmy nomination next week. I’m just sayin’!
Outfest, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, turns 30 years old today with the start of its annual festival. As usual they will be presenting a huge number of films, documentaries and shorts over the next week and a half. I have been a member for a few years now and am always thrilled to support independent filmmaking and gay and lesbian cinema. I’ve appeared in films here in the past like Hollywood je T’aime and The Closet and will be submitting a few projects next year including our latest hysterical short Dirty Talk. In the meantime, I will just be enjoying the films that run from today July 12 thru July 22nd’s closing night feature, Struck by Lightning, written by and starring Glee‘s Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer.
Opening the festival tonight is the documentary Vito about gay rights activist Vito Russo while other big premieres include the comedy I Do(by my friend David Ross), Cloudburst starring Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis, and Bearcity 2: The Proposal. There will also be a Hairspray sing-along and a special panel on the hilarious sitcom Happy Endings... For more on all the films and Outfest, head here.
Below is a list of films I will be seeing (and I’m sure I’ll be adding more in the days ahead)…
Any Day Now (starring Alan Cumming and Garrett Dillahaunt) Elliott Loves I Do My Best Day Gayby(a hilarious comedy I saw at the LA FIlm Fest) Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean Beauty(a fascinating and tense foreign drama) Struck by Lightning
And enjoy this preview reel of some of the great films that will be playing this year at the 30th Anniversary of Outfest.
