Check out “Follow Friday the Film”!

June 15, 2012

Do you love your Twitter? Do you know who the heck you’re talking to when you’re tweeting? (Yes, I finally learned the correct way to say that, cuz as a non-twitterer my version wasn’t quite so polite…) Have you ever wondered what on Earth makes Twitter such an influential media tool? Or does Twitter simply just confuse you? Well, now you can get all of those questions and more answered with the new documentary Follow Friday the Film…  The movie which is about to begin production follows filmmaker Erin Faulk as she travels cross-country with cinematographer Matthew Sordello to meet and interview the 140 strangers she follows on Twitter. She will discuss why she follows them, look up their recommendations for places to go, things to see and restaurants to visit, etc as she journeys across the country. Looking at their trailer and website, the film should be fascinating. And here’s a bonus, one of my best friend’s ever, Giana Mucci is producing the film along with Brad Follmer. For more on the project, to donate and help out the cause (you know indie filmmaking is tough!), head to their website here and their kickstarter page here.… And check out the tailer and info video below, plus their fun take on Carly Rae Jepsen‘s inescapable smash “Call Me Maybe”… Then watch for Follow Friday the Film to hit festivals and a theatre near you.

“The Killing” is still a Killer Show

May 14, 2012

Last week, I had the privilege of going to a special screening of an episode of AMC’s The Killing followed by a Q & A with the cast and creator Veena Sud. It was a wonderful evening held at the Television Academy and the episode screened, “Off the Reservation“, (which aired last night) was incredible. It was another showcase for the show’s star Mireille Enos who grabbed an Emmy nomination last year and should find herself in the running again for this emotional installment as her character was searching for her missing partner Holder (played by the incredibly charismatic Joel Kinnaman). Those two detectives have been going rogue a bit lately in this second season of the fantastic mystery thriller as they try to solve the murder of teen Rosie Larson. There seems to be a conspiracy involving the cops, the mayor and the Indian casino reservation, and those two aren’t sure who to trust. Still in the mix are Larson’s grieving parents, played by the amazing Brent Sexton and Emmy nominated Michelle Forbes, and her aunt Terry (the wonderfully damaged Jamie Anne Allman) who has some secrets of her own. The political connections to the crime continue to weigh heavily as well with Billy Campbell, Kristen Lehman and Eric Ladin all giving incredible performances as well as they deal with Campbell’s character’s recent paralysis and campaign crises. The Killing remains a tense and brilliant thriller week in and week out and I hope it gets more Emmy recognition this year especially for the amazing Enos, who couldn’t be nicer and more lovely by the way. Enos has such wonderful intensity, vulnerability and relatability and can say so much with just a tiny glint of emotion in her eye. Watch for her to be a big movie star soon too in Gangster Squad  with Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling and alongside Brad Pitt in World War Z.  She and most of the cast (Sexton, Allman, Lehman, Kinnaman, and a very funny Campbell) were at the Q&A and gave some great insight into this tremendous program. I highly recommend you catch up with it ASAP before we finally learn who actually killed Rosie at the end of this season. For more on the show, head to AMC here and check out my pictures below. Please enjoy my friend Giana Mucci in the pictures as well. She loves the show as much as me and clearly loved the cast too.
The Killing airs Sunday nights at 10pm on AMC.

Coming Out with “Days of Our Lives” and Outfest

March 31, 2012

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending a special event hosted by Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBT Film Festival, which is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. To celebrate, they have had a ton of big events including their recent Fusion Film Festival focusing on LGBT Films starring/created by people of color, and last night, they got together with NBC Universal to celebrate the long running soap Days of Our Lives. The show, which yes, I have watched since like 1984 (along with the dearly departed and fantastic soap Santa Barbara) has embarked on its first gay storyline~ the complicated, fascinating, difficult and incredibly emotional coming out of Will Horton, played by Daytime Emmy nominee Chandler Massey. His character has seen a lot of drama over the years usually fueled by his mother Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney, also the host of The Biggest Loser) and her shenanigans. Now, all of those experiences are affecting his coming out process. The hardest part of which has been having to admit it to himself. The show has been on fire with this storyline featuring amazing writing and a brilliant performance by the sure to be Emmy nominated again Massey. He has such a great natural quality and has wonderful honest chemistry and connections with all his costars including Sweeney, Bryan Datillo (his skeptical and slightly judgmental father Lucas), his somewhat pushy grandmother Kate played by the fierce and so fun Lauren Koslow and his loving and always understanding grandmother Marlena played by Emmy nominated daytime grande dame Deidre Hall. They were all at the event last night which featured clips from the show and a Q&A discussion about the storyline. Also at the panel was Wally Kurth who plays Justin whose character has a gay son, Sonny (Freddie Smith), that has been a mentor/friend to Will throughout this process…. It looks like romance will be in the cards for Will in the months ahead along with some big reactions from his family (some good, some bad, some confused). All I know is I haven’t been this excited about Days since Marlena was possessed by the devil back in the mid-90′s. It’s the perfect time to start watching as all the story lines are getting really good, the writing is strong across the board and the actors are really rising to the challenge. For more on the show, head to their website here, and take a look at my pictures from the event I attended with my friends and longtime Days fans Steve Kerem and Giana Mucci. It was so much fun and all the stars were  incredibly nice especially the tremendously charismatic Massey. He is going to be a big star, and how amazing was it to chat with a living soap legend in Ms. Hall? Just a great night honoring a wonderful show and an important, inclusive, and juicy storyline.
