ABC turns to Rebel Wilson and The SHIELD for its Fall 2013 Lineup

ABC had some surprises in store for as they unveiled their 2013 Fall Lineup this morning. Among them was the downsizing of Dancing with the Stars (which will now only air once a week with the results included each week), moving The Neighbors to Friday and holding Suburgatory for midseason. One not so big surprise was the inclusion of two new series, the Rebel Wilson comedy Super Fun Night getting the plum post-Modern Family slot, and the Marvel comics adaptation The S.H.I.E.L.D. opening up a new programming block on Tuesdays. Both have a great shot at success and we’ll see if the Once Upon a Time spinoff, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, can make magic in the somewhat cursed 8pm Thursday slot…. Also of note, many of the dramas like Revenge and red-hot Scandal will run for two 12 episode blocks bridged by new “limited” series. The year is coming to an end fast and that means it’s time for “Best of” lists! I love them and admit it, a lot of you do too… So, in the next few weeks, I will be posting about my favorite music, movies, performances and tv shows from the past year. 2013 Show I’m Most Looking Forward To: The Following

“Happy Endings” is BACK!

One of my favorite comedies on television is finally coming back this week. ABC’s ridiculously hilarious Happy Endings returns for season 3 in its new time slot Tuesday night Oct 23rd at 9pm. (Also returning at 9:30pm is the quirky crazy Don’t Trust the B in Apt 23…) I am so thrilled Endings is returning because it’s simply one of the funniest shows ever and the true heir to the Friends throne. If you haven’t checked it out, tune in tomorrow and you will be hooked. And um, Emmy voters, please pay attention too. (Casey Wilson was robbed of a nom this year!)… To wet, your appetite, enjoy this hilarious video below.

Happy Endings~ “Boom Sucka”

Watch the Hysterical Pilot for NBC’s “The New Normal” Now!

I just got lucky… No, not like that silly. I mean that I just got lucky because the new show I have been looking forward to most of the fall season, NBC’s The New Normal is now available online. NBC and Hulu are both streaming the pilot for this hysterical show which follows a loving and successful gay couple David (The Hangover’s Justin Bartha) and Bryan (the Tony nominated star of The Book of Mormon Andrew Rannells) as they attempt to have a baby with a charming surrogate Goldie (the very appealing Georgia King) who already has her own smarter-than-all-the-adults tween Shania (Bebe Wood) and a meddlesome and racist/homophobic/all-around offensively hilarious grandmother Nana (Tony award winner for The Normal Heart and current Modern Family Emmy nominee Ellen Barkin). Glee and The Real Housewives‘ NeNe Leakes costars as Brian’s sassy assistant in this sitcom from the man who created Glee himself Ryan Murphy. It has that show’s signature biting humor and heart and the ensemble is fantastic. The show fires on all cylinders and I think Rannells is going to break out big. Also, watch for Barkin to become an awards magnet for this role that should be utterly atrocious but in her incredibly skilled hands becomes somehow likable despite the funny and foul things flying out of her mouth. The show will be paired with Matthew Perry’s amiable new comedy Go On on Tuesday nights on NBC starting September 11th. I can’t recommend it anymore… In fact, Tuesday night is gonna be a hot bed of hilarious comedy with New Girl, The Mindy Project, Happy Endings, Go On, Raising Hope, Don’t Trust the B in Apt. 23 and The New Normal. My dvr will be in overdrive, but I’m pushing The New Normal to the front of the pack and declaring it the fall’s best new sitcom…. And now you can check it out below or on NBC.com and hulu. A quick Outfest Wrap Up

So, I’ve had a crazy busy and frustrating week and I haven’t had a chance to tell ya my thoughts on this year’s Outfest.… The 30th Anniversary of the biggest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in the country was a great one, and I’m thrilled to report that all of the movies I saw were pretty darn good. I don’t know if I just chose better movies to see or the quality in general was up this year, but it was a good experience…
I saw the quirky Sundance entry My Best Day, the riotous comedy Gayby, the funny coming of age comedy Elliott Loves, and the gorgeously shot super artistic drama Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean. I also went to a hilarious panel and screening of an episode of Happy Endings featuring the creators and cast members Adam Pally (Max), Zachary Knighton (Dave) and frequent guest star the hysterical Stephen Guarino (Derrick). Despite the forum being moderating by a hugely annoying and disrespectful moron reporter from The Hollywood Reporter who spoke like the long-lost gay Kardashian brother, it was an incredibly fun day and the screening of the lost “Kickball” episode was brilliant.
There were two films I wanted to bring special attention to that I saw as well. The first was I Do a wonderful drama about a British immigrant who marries his best female friend to stay in the country but suddenly falls for his perfect man. The story was beautifully written by my friend David W. Ross as it detailed the difficulties that gay couples face when one of them is not a citizen. Hello can we all just get some equal rights??? It also features wonderful performances by Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Alicia Witt, Maurice Compte and Ross himself. Check out the trailer below and watch for the film in more festivals this fall with a pending release as well!

I Do

Finally, the best film I saw at Outfest was the amazing and incredibly emotional drama, Any Day Now, featuring an Oscar worthy performance by Tony Award winner and Emmy nominee Alan Cumming. He plays a gay man in 1979 who falls for a lawyer (Raising Hope’s fantastic Garret Dillahaunt) and tries to adopt a teenage boy with down syndrome (heartbreaking newcomer Isaac Leyva) who’s been abandoned by his drug addicted mother (The Killing‘s tremendous Jamie Anne Allman). Their court battles and Marco’s struggles are gut wrenching and beautifully portrayed. This amazing film won the Audience Award for Best Feature and Cumming was awarded Best Actor by the Fetival as well. I highly recommend everyone see Any Day Now on the festival circuit and when it hits theaters across the nation this fall. Take a look at this beautiful film by Travis Fine here, and when you see it in the theatre, get out your handkerchiefs now too cuz I bawled like a baby throughout it! Just a landmark and incredible movie.

Some Thoughts on Today’s Emmy Nominations…

So, today we saw several of the usual and deserving suspects grab multiple Emmy nominations like Modern Family, Breaking Bad and Mad Men. However, there were some big surprises and some upsetting snubs… Let’s take a look at some of those.

Good Surprises:

~ The Acting Love for Downton Abbey with Michelle Dockery (Mary), Hugh Bonneville (Lord Granville), Joanne Froggat (Anna), Brendan Coyle (Mr. Carson), and Jim Carter (Mr. Bates) all grabbing nods alongside last year’s winner Maggie Smith.
~ Anna Gunn finally grabbing a nod for Breaking Bad
~ Martha Plimpton getting a nod for The Good Wife despite being snubbed for Raising Hope
~ Veep getting nominated for Comedy Series. I thought only Julia Louis Dreyfuss would be recognized, so I’m thrilled
~ Max Greenfield, the standout performer on New Girl, joined his show’s star Zooey Deschanel with a nomination
~ Merrit Weaver finally getting a nomination for her hysterical work on Nurse Jackie … and yay for Edie Falco still getting recognized for her wonderful work too in one of the show’s best seasons.
~ Margaret Cho getting a nod for her side-splittingly hilarious work on 30 Rock
~ the continued love for Cat Deeley and So You Think You Can Dance
~ Jean Smart grabbing a nod for her brilliant turn on the cancelled Harry’s Law (joining the show’s star Kathy Bates who also grabbed a nod for her guest turn on Two and A Half Men)

I’m also very pleased in general with the nominations for Homeland, Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Game Change, Dot Marie Jones, Game of Thrones and all the actors from The Good Wife.

Now the bad…

~ Girls getting nods for series and star Lena Dunham. While I appreciate that Dunham is not your usual tv star, I despise this self-satisfied horribly unfunny show and its unlikable characters
~ The Voice got a nod over American Idol? That’s a tragedy!
~ Jon Cryer, Don Cheadle and Larry David all got nods over Parks & Recreation’s fantastic Adam Scott? That’s not right!
~ Boardwalk Empire‘s nods, ugh… They should rename it BOREDwalk Empire

And now the shocking snubs….

~ Where the hell is Parks and Recreation in Comedy Series and double, where the hell is Nick Offerman in Supporting Actor Comedy
~ So many Glee snubs, but the biggest were for Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch and guest star Matt Bomer... I guess the industry is no longer singing their tune…
~ Where in the world is The Good Wife for Drama Series?!!!
~ Former nominees left out in the cold: John Slattery (Mad Men), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Betty White (Hot in Cleveland), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Laura Linney (The Big C), Mirielle Enos (The Killing), Michelle Forbes (The Killing) and Hugh Laurie (House) who will sadly never have won for his iconic character.

There are tons more omissions that are upsetting like Lena Heady (Game of Thrones), John Noble and Anna Torv (Fringe), the rest of the cast of The Killing and the show for that matter, Happy Endings and its stars Casey Wilson and Damon Wayans Jr, everyone on GCB, Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter), Matthew Perry and Carrie Preston‘s guest work on The Good Wife, Megan Hilty (Smash), Jeff Perry and Kerry Washinton (Scandal), RuPaul and RuPaul’s Drag Race and on and on…. It’s time for my Big Bold 2012 Emmy Nomination Predictions!

Thursday morning July 19th is the day all of the television industry has been looking towards as this year’s Emmy Nominations are announced. We should expect last year’s winners Mad Men and Modern Family to be at the top of the heap again. However, we could see a few other series top them for overall nominations including Breaking Bad, Parks & Recreation, The Good Wife, and Game of Thrones. Some newbies are likely to make a big mark like New Girl and especially Homeland which should rack up a lot of nods. Check back here on Thursday for all the nominees and check out my big bold predictions below… I’m rooting for a few long shots like The Killing and its superb cast, Smash‘s Megan Hilty, Casey Wilson from Happy Endings and Jeff Perry from Scandal. Celebrate 30 Years of Outfest Tonight!

Outfest, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, turns 30 years old today with the start of its annual festival. As usual they will be presenting a huge number of films, documentaries and shorts over the next week and a half. I have been a member for a few years now and am always thrilled to support independent filmmaking and gay and lesbian cinema. I’ve appeared in films here in the past like Hollywood je T’aime and The Closet and will be submitting a few projects next year including our latest hysterical short Dirty Talk. In the meantime, I will just be enjoying the films that run from today July 12 thru July 22nd’s closing night feature, Struck by Lightning, written by and starring Glee‘s Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer.
Opening the festival tonight is the documentary Vito about gay rights activist Vito Russo while other big premieres include the comedy I Do (by my friend David Ross), Cloudburst starring Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis, and Bearcity 2: The Proposal. There will also be a Hairspray sing-along and a special panel on the hilarious sitcom Happy Endings... For more on all the films and Outfest, head here.

The Critic’s Choice TV Noms love Breaking Bad, Parks and Rec, and Community!

Today’s Critic’s Choice TV Award nominations gave a big ole finger to the Emmys with nominations for a ton of newbies and deserving shows that are always ignored by the Academy. Among those who are often snubbed that the Critic’s supported today are Community which lead with 6 nominations plus performers from Happy Endings (Casey Wilson & Damon Wayans Jr., yay!), Fringe (John Noble), Sons of Anarchy (Katey Sagal, Charlie Huffman, Maggie Siff), SouthLAnd (Regina King, Lucy Liu), and Shameless (Emmy Rossum, Chloe Webb). New show grabbing a lot of love include New Girl with 3 nods including Zooey Deschanel and the hilarious Max Greenfield, Girls, Homeland, and Veep… Following Community (a show I don’t really like, but totally like several of its performers, most notably Allison Brie and Jim Rash), Parks and Recreation and Breaking Bad both totaled 5 nods with The Good Wife and Modern Family nabbing 4 mentions… Big ups to Cheryl Hines from Suburgatory, Michelle Dockrey from Downton Abbey, Cat Deely and So You Think You Can Dance, and RuPaul who are all in the running as well… For more on the show and the nominees which will be announced June 18th, head here, and take a look at all the contenders below.

ABC Makes Some Big Moves with its 2012 Fall Schedule

Despite the departure of Desperate Housewives after 8 years, Sunday nights on ABC will still be full of soapy goodness as their buzziest freshman series Revenge relocates to that 9pm timeslot next fall. It’s one of a couple of big and interesting moves to ABC’s 2012 Fall Schedule. The other big news has one of my favorite comedies on TV, Happy Endings, moving to Tuesdays at 9 followed by Don’t Trust the B in Apt. 23. That’s one hilarious hour of comedy. Unfortunately, it will be fighting against comedy blocks on NBC (Go On and The New Normal) and Fox (New Girl and The Mindy Project). I have no idea who will win this time battle, but I will have my dvrs in overdrive for sure! … The network also announced that the fall edition of Dancing with the Stars will be an all-star edition of former celebrity contenders, i.e.: one big fascinating hot mess… New comedies coming from the network include the family comedy The Neighbors which gets the plum post- Modern Family slot and Malibu Country starring Reba McEntire. Midseason brings a slew of new comedies as well with How to Live with Your Parents… starring Sarah Chalke, Brad Garrett and Elizaeth Perkins and The Family Tools with Kyle Bornheimer.
New Dramas on the schedule include the country music soap Nashville starring Emmy nominee Connie Britton and Heroes‘ Hayden Panittiere, Last Resort with Emmy winner Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman and 666 Park Avenue with Emmy winner Terry O’Quinn and Emmy nominee Vanessa Williams. All three look great…. Later in the season ABC will serve up the soap Mistresses with Alyssa Milano, the thriller Red Widow and the mystery Zero Hour plus the return of Body of Proof.

With all these additions, several new shows got the axe including my beloved GCB.… Also, getting cancelled were Missing, The River, Man Up, Work It, Extreme Home Makeover, Pan Am, Charlie’s Angels and Cougar Town. However, hurrah, the latter is heading to TBS for two more seasons! … With all of that said, check out ABC’s new schedule below.
