First Listen~ Justin Timberlake “Suit & Tie”

January 14, 2013

justin-timberlake-suit-and-tieLately, actor/singer/writer/producer/newlywed Justin Timberlake has been making a name for himself as a movie star in films both good (The Social Network) and bad (The Trouble with the Curve), but many of his fans have been wondering about his latent music career. Well, wait no more. The Grammy winner just released his first new single in ages as the mid tempo smooth R& B track “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay Z just hit the web. It’s the first new song from his upcoming album The 20/20 Experience which is only his third solo album and his first since 2006. After a quick listen to the track, I think JT has another hit on his hands. However, it also leaves me wondering when he turned into CeeLo Green? … But what do you think? Check it out below and let me know if you’re excited about more music from JT.

My Big Bold Grammy Nomination Predictions!

November 30, 2011

Tomorrow night CBS will air their live Grammy nomination concert featuring performances by former winners Lady Gaga, Sugarland, Rihanna, and Usher who are all likely to hear their names in this year’s list of contenders. Also performing are likely nominees Jason Aldean (who could wind up with 5 nominations alongside duet partner Kelly Clarkson), The Band Perry and Ludacris. But the one name you are likely to hear more than any other is Adele who should be the front-runner for all the big categories and could wind up with at least 7 nods (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Pop Album, Pop Solo, Pop Collaboration, and Short form Music Video). Other acts who could wind up with multiple nominations include Tony Bennett (with the late Amy Winehouse) in the General and Pop Fields,  Kanye West, Nicki Minaj and Jay Z in the rap categories, Beyonce v. former band mate Kelly Rowland in R&B, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars in Pop, Robyn in Dance and Aldean, Taylor Swift, The Band Perry and Brad Paisley in Country.
There are some interesting changes this year too that should impact the categories. They combined the Male and Female categories into one Solo category in each field along with combining the Group and Collaboration categories into one contest for Vocal Duo, Group or Collaboration. Because of these changes, I think there may be 6 acts in several of these categories. But enough of my babbling… Take a look at my predictions for the Big 4 categories and the Pop Field and check back tomorrow for the full list of nominees.

My Big Bold Grammy Nomination Predictions~

Doo Wops & Hooligans- Bruno Mars
The Union- Leon Russell & Elton John
So Beautiful or So What- Paul Simon
~spoilers: Femme Fatale- Britney Spears, Loud- Rihanna, The Ladykiller- CeeLo Green

* One interesting note~ Lady Gaga’s record company did NOT submit the single “Born This Way” for Record or Song of the Year or any single in the Dance categories. I think they screwed up big time. They did submit “Judas” and “You and I” in the Record and Song categories but those will have to fight hard to grab a nod…

Billboard Ranks Beyonce’s Biggest Hits!

September 2, 2011

As many of you readers know, I love a countdown. I love to see the rankings of movies at the box office, songs on the radio, tv shows in the ratings, and of course I love to do my own lists. I think I got this proclivity as a young child reading the Billboard charts and listening to American Top 40 every Sunday morning. So, I’m still obsessed with the Billboard charts (hence my weekly Wednesday postings) and they have just done a special countdown.
Today, they unleashed their list of the biggest Beyonce songs of all time on the Hot 100 ranked using an inverse point system, with weeks at No. 1 earning the greatest value and weeks at No. 100 earning the least. It’s a great list and surprising how high some songs are (“Check on It” really?) and how low others are (“Bootylicious” her lowest ranking chart topper). And yes, it does include duets and recording with Destiny’s Child. So, to honor B’s upcoming 30th bday, her astounding performance of “Love on Top” on Sunday’s VMA’s and her impending baby, check out the top 30 songs by Grammy winner Beyonce. (for more on B, head to her website here: www.beyonceonline.com)

The Game, Barbra, Maroon 5 and Xtina make big “Moves” on the Charts

August 31, 2011

She hasn’t done it since 2001 and he is the first to do it in history… Just what am I talking about? If I said she is Christina Aguilera and he is Adam Levine from Maroon 5 would you have a better clue? Now, now get your heads out of the gutter. I’m talking about the fact that Xtina grabs her first # 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100 since “Lady Marmalade” (performed alongside Pink, Mya, Missy Elliott and Lil Kim) ten years ago with her collaboration with Maroon 5 on “Moves Like Jagger”. It’s the first chart topper on the Hot 100 for the band since “Makes Me Wonder” in 2007…. So, just what exactly is Levine doing that’s so special? Well, he becomes the first singer to land a # 1 song as a member of a band during the same week as a featured solo artist with the song “Stereo Hearts” by Gym Class Heroes featuring The Voice coach rising to # 10. Congrats to them both. With all that said, Katy Perry tumbles from the top to # 5 and Foster the People flies up to # 3. It should be a big race for the top next week between Maroon & Xtina, Foster the People and two flying high singles by Lady Gaga (“You and I”) and Adele (“Someone Like You”) that will have massive sales increases after the MTV Video Music Awards…. In the meantime head to www.billboard.com for more on the singles chart and check out the new top ten below.

Jay, Kanye and Katy rule the Charts yet again…

August 25, 2011

In another lackluster week on the pop charts, the titans of rap and the princess of pop held sway at the top of the Albums and Singles lists. On Billboard’s Top 200 Album chart, Jay Z & Kanye West’s Watch the Throne made it two in a row in top ten that included debuts from Blue October and the Eli Young Band… Over on the Hot 100 Singles chart, Katy Perry made it two in a row with “Last Friday Night” her 5th consecutive chart topper from Teenage Dream. She may have some competition in the weeks ahead from fast rising songs by Lil Wayne (“She Will” the big debut of the week), Lady Gaga (“You and I”, the biggest gainer outside the top ten) and Maroon 5 w/Christina Aguilera who make big airplay gains despite slipping a notch to #4. Keep a look out next week to see if Katy hold on. For more on all the Billboard charts, head here and check out the new top tens below.

And here’s one of my faves in the top ten, Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks”. Enjoy!

Katy Perry Breaks Records while Jay Z & Kanye bow Big on the Charts

August 17, 2011

Katy Perry has finally out done Madonna, Whitney, Celine and Janet in the record books. She just landed her fifth # 1 single from her Teenage Dream album with “Last Friday Night”. Bolstered by a ridiculously huge amount of airplay and added sales from a remix by Missy Elliott, the song makes it five in a row for Perry as she becomes the first female artist and second singer in history to land five # 1′s on the Hot 100 from a single album. She follows Michael Jackson who did it with his Bad album and the chart toppers “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Dirty Diana” Man in the Mirror” and “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You” with Siedah Garrett. Katy’s chart leaders were “California Gurls” with Snoop Dogg, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.” with Kanye West and now “Last Friday Night”. Congrats Katy! … In case you’re wondering the artists with four # 1′s from one album are Whitney Houston (Whtiney), George Michael (Faith), Janet Jackson (Rhythm Nation 1814), Mariah Carey (Mariah Carey) and Paula Abdul (Forever Your Girl)… Madonna has had three chart toppers from an album, True Blue, while Celine has actually never had more than one # 1 single per album strangely enough. For more on the singles and Katy’s record head to Billboard here. And check out the new top ten below.

Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten Singles:

8. “Pumped Up Kicks”- Foster the People (lw~ 13)
9. “I Wanna Go”- Britney Spears (lw~ 7)

Over on the Album chats, Jay Z & Kanye West make a huge debut on top with their collaboration album, Watch the Throne. It sold 436,000 copies for the second biggest bow of 2011 after Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. The rappers lead three other debuts in the top ten including country singer Luke Bryan who gets his biggest sales week ever with his latest, Tailgates & Tanlines, which also tops the Country charts. Check out the new top ten albums below.
