Kathy Griffin~ Dance Club Diva???

September 30, 2012

We all know Kathy Griffin has a big gay fan base and that a lot of the gays like to go dancing. (Hey I can say it, I’m one of ‘em!) … Now, it looks like dancing and Kathy and the gays are converging in disco heaven with Griffin’s first dance single “I’ll Say It”. The song with remixes by the likes of Gustavo Scorpio hits Billboard‘s Dance Club play chart this week at # 44 and is available at  iTunes. One can only hope she will perform it at some point on her Bravo talk show Kathy which has been renewed for another season. Take a listen to Kathy the dance diva below and catch her live across the country this fall. The two-time Emmy winner and three-time Grammy nominee will also be hosting the hilarious Best in Drag Show event next Sunday October 7th in Los Angeles benefitting Aid for AIDS. I’ve worked on the show several times and it’s a riot and features the most unique beauty contestants you have ever seen plus lots of celebrity judges. Kathy has also supported it for many years and she is as kind and giving as she is hilarious. I highly recommend it. For more on the Best in Drag Show, head here and enjoy Kathy’s crooning below.

Game of Thrones Conquers the Creative Arts Emmy Awards

September 16, 2012

Kathy Griffin may call them the “Shmemmys” but the Creative Arts Emmys are actually the same as the regular Emmys. They just don’t make it onto the big awards telecast. They did, however, take place tonight and in years past, they are where Griffin was a 2 time winner. This year, she may have lost her bid for a golden guy, but Game of Thrones was up for 13 and that fantastic series led tonight’s winners with 6 awards. Tonight’s ceremony honored mostly the creative and technical categories like lighting, editing and art direction, but there were a few big awards. Taking home the Best Non Fiction Program (i.e.: reality show award) for the first time was Undercover Boss while Smash pulled an upset in the Choreography category out dancing several amazing contenders from So You Think You Can Dance. In the casting categories, Homeland, Game Change and Girls prevailed (yay for the first two, not so much the latter) while there were 4 acting awards handed out in the Guest Actor categories. Taking the Drama Guest Actor Awards were Jeremy Davies for Justified and Martha Plimpton for The Good Wife. (An extra yay for Plimpton who is brilliant on that show and was surprisingly omitted from the very competitive Best Actress Comedy Series race this year for Raising Hope after grabbing a nod last year.) On the comedy side, Jimmy Fallon won for hosting Saturday Night Live while Kathy Bates finally landed a win for playing Charlie Sheen’s old character on Two and A Half Men after 11 nominations. (She could still won next week for her work on Harry’s Law too)… For more on all the winners and the Emmys, head here. Then check out all the winners below and be sure to catch the Big Folk Emmy Awards next Sunday Sept. 23rd on ABC.

“Best in Drag” is Back!

August 2, 2012

The best pageant of the year is back. I’m talking about the hilarious, irreverent and ridiculously entertaining Best in Drag competition that returns to the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles this October 7th. The show, which pits drag queens against one another as they battle for the crown in traditional categories like bathing suit, talent and evening gown, is also a fundraiser for Aid For Aids and they have raised tons of money for this wonderful cause over the years…. The show also features a host of guest celebrity judges (past attendees include Vanessa Williams, Melanie Griffith, Rita Wilson, Holland Taylor, Camryn Manheim, and even Charlie Sheen) plus Kathy Griffin opens the show. I have worked on the show for several years and it is a wonderful and moving experience, not to mention a laugh riot. Tickets are on sale now. Head to the Best in Drag website here for all the information. You can also find info on Twitter and Facebook, and check out their great promotional video below edited by my friend (and my Dirty Talk film editor) David Neuendorff.

Forget Miss America, here comes Best in Drag!

October 7, 2011

If you thought the Miss America, Miss USA or Miss Universe were the ultimate beauty pageant, you thought wrong. Or more likely, you’ve never experienced the audacious awesomeness of the annual Best in Drag show every October to benefit Aid for AIDS. The beauty and talent competition not only raises funds for a good cause, but is a ridiculously fun and outrageous eventing pitting drag queens against each other in a classic pageant battle. Plus, Emmy winner Kathy Griffin opens the show and is one of the celebrity judges. Also participating on the judging panel this year are Emmy nominee Harry Hamlin (L.A. Law), Lisa Rinna (Melrose Place), Emmy nominee Dot Marie Jones (Glee), Rita Wilson (Larry Crowne), Emmy winner Wayne Brady (The Wayne Brady Show), Tony Award winner for Spamalot and Grey’s Anatomy star Sara Ramirez, Emmy nominee Vanessa Williams (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) and my costar from our guest appearance on Hot in Cleveland, Oscar nominee Melanie Griffith (Working Girl). That’s quite a lineup and I guarantee you will have an amazing time helping out this worthy cause.

What a Great Glee!

March 16, 2011

Last night, Glee went to regionals as the New Directions took one step closer to the nationals competition. In their bid, they did original songs for the first time and the results were fantastic. Take a look at 3 awesome new songs from last night’s Glee~ “Get it Right” (my fave), “Loser Like Me” (which is currently # 1 on iTunes) and “Hell to the No” (which is just plain awesome)… Now, that wasn’t the only excitement on the show last night. We had a rioutous appearance by Kathy Griffin and the first kiss for Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) that was romantic and beautifully done. Plus the Warblers gave us several great tracks. Take a listen to my fave musical moments of last night’s Glee below.

Eminem leads the Grammy noms but Bruno Mars, Cee Lo and the Lady’s Antbellum and Gaga are hot on his heels

December 2, 2010

Eminem completed his career Recovery with his recent # 1 album of the same name and now he has grabbed a leading 10 Grammy Award  nominations including Album and Record and Song of the Year for “Love the Way You Lie” with Rihanna. He may just be the first rap artist to actually win Record of the Year come February 13, 2011 when the awards are handed out. He does have some stiff competition in a very competitive year from big names like Jay Z, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, but also from some strong upstarts like Bruno Mars, B.o.B and the surprise big contender Cee Lo Green. In fact, Cee Lo and his expletive laden track “F##k You” netted 7 nominations, as did Mars. Up next with 6 apiece were Lady Gaga and country superstars Lady Antebellum. Also grabbing multiple noms were Perry (a shocker in the Album of the Year category), Usher, Miranda Lambert, Arcade Fire, Rihanna, Drake, John Mayer, and last year’s Best New Artist winners The Zac Brown Band. Take a look at the full list on the Grammy website here. Below I have the big contenders in the pop, country, dance, rap, rock, R&B and a few other choice fields.

First here’s a few comments on the contenders…

Big snubs this year include Ke$ha (not much of a surprise, but she’s had a big year), The Script, Alicia Keyes (for her solo work aside from the Jay Z single), Sheryl Crow and Taylor Swift (last year’s big winner got the goose egg despite being eligible for her singles “Mine” and “Today was a Fairytale”)

Happy Inclusions: A big congrats to Idols Fantasia who nabbed 2 nominations, Carrie Underwood in Country Female and Adam Lambert in the Pop Male category and the Glee cast in Pop Vocal Duo or Group. Plus it’s a Female Comedy showdown between the hilarious Kathy Griffin and Margaret Cho for Comedy Album. Congrats to Robyn for grabbing a nod in the Dance field.

The Bad nominees:
~Justin Bieber for New Artist and Pop Album… um vomit!
~Beyonce is nomm’d for Pop Female for “Halo” again. Yeah, it’s a new live version, but she won this category for that song last year. And she got in over Pink, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow and Christina Aguilera? Not right!
~Where’s Carrie Underwood in Country Album?
~ Where are Pink and Madonna in Long Form Music Video?
~ Why is B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You” in Record of the Year instead of the superior “Airplanes”?
~ No “Bad Romance” in Record of the Year??? (well, Gaga did get 6 other noms, so I shouldn’t complain)
~ No Kylie Minogue in the Dance categories~ a travesty!
~ No Melissa Etheridge in the Rock categories~ another travesty
~ Susan Boyle in Pop Album? Oh please! (and she got in over Sheryl, Sarah, Adam, Maroon 5 and more~ ridiculous)

Ok, I could go on and on, but I’ll let the nominee list do the talking for you… Check them out below!

A Message from Kathy Griffin & Chris Colfer~ It Gets Better

October 5, 2010

Due to the unsettling rise in LGBT teen suicides as a result of bullying, a new campaign has arisen to bring awareness to this cause, It Gets Better. The project features celebrities and everyday people uploading their own personal stories of bullying and how they stayed strong and got through the difficult times. It also features links to The Trevor Project which is an amazing organization that helps struggling LGBT youth and works to prevent teen suicide. For more information on their great work and to contribute or help out, click here…. And check out two messages from Emmy winner Kathy Griffin and Emmy nominated Glee star Chris Colfer below… Remember IT DOES GET BETTER!
