“The Avengers” Lords Over the MTV Movie Awards

April 17, 2013

imagesSunday night was all about some super heroes and a super silly lady as The Avengers took home 3 awards including Movie of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards while host Rebel Wilson won two statues. Wilson and her Pitch Perfect cohorts not only performed on the show but they won Musical Moment over Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Wilson took home the Breakthrough Award. The other big winner of the night was Silver Linings Playbook which landed three awards including Actor and Actress for Bradley Cooper and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence… I have to say I was a bit dismayed that the brilliant films Les Miserables, Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Dark Knight Rises all went home empty-handed, but hey, I’ll admit I’m a bit older than the MTV voting demographic unfortunately, lol … For more on the show and the awards, head to the MTV site here and take a look at all the winners below.

Justin Timberlake is Back on Top in a Big Way

March 28, 2013

2020EXPERIENCEGrammy winner Justin Timberlake makes a huge impression with his third album as The 20/20 Experience overperformed even the most optimistic projects with 968,000 copies sold to land him his second # 1 album on the Billboard charts. That’s the biggest debut of 2013, Justin’s best-selling week ever and the biggest debut since Taylor Swift’s Red. With 452,000 of those units sold digitally, it was also the 3rd biggest digital debut in history following Swift and Lady Gaga. Not only is he killing it on the album charts, but JT’s latest single “Mirrors” flies up to a new peak of # 13 while his first single from the album, “Suit & Tie” also grabs a new peak of # 3…. It’s All about Django, Jennifer and Ted at the MTV Movie Award Nominations

March 6, 2013

Django-Unchained-wallpapers-1920x1200-4This year, it looks like the MTV Movie Awards are looking to class up the joint a bit as they nominated several Oscar winners and nominees among their top choices for this year’s ceremony. Django Unchained, which won two Oscars, grabbed 7 nominations including Best Movie where it goes up against Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook plus The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Ted. The later film, a some-what lowbrow stoner comedy, is also up for 7 awards right in line with MTV’s usual choices… The other big contender is Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence who is up for 5, yes 5, awards including Best Female Performance against fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway. Take a look at all the nominees below which also feature some of my favorite films (Perks of Being a Wallflower, Les Mis, Skyfall) and performers (Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Emma Watson, Rebel Wilson, Jessica Chastain and Marion Cotillard to name a few). Check out the Amazing Chicago/Dreamgirls/Les Mis Medley from the Oscars Again

February 26, 2013

My favorite moment of Sunday’s Oscar telecast was the musical medley of the fantastic and Oscar-winning musical films Chicago, Dreamgirls and Les Miserables. Oscar winner Catharine Zeta-Jones did a nice job opening the segment with “All that Jazz” but it really kicked into gear with an astounding performance by Oscar and Grammy winner Jennifer Hudson singing her iconic Dreamgirls song “And I Am Telling You I am Not Going”. It was a brilliant moment that netted her a much deserved standing ovation. Following J Hud, was the wonderful ensemble of Les Miserables featuring newly minted Oscar winner Anne Hathaway, Oscar nominee Hugh Jackman, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried, Russell Crow, Samantha Barks, Aaron Tveitt, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter with a medley of “Suddenly/I Dreamed a Dream/One Day More” that also yielded a standing O. I have to say that Barks and Tveitt stole that number which is not too surprising considering they’re the seasoned stage performers of the group. All in all, I absolutely loved the whole musical shebang and I’m thrilled that these amazing movies and performers were singled out again. It’s an incredible moment and I have it for you again below. Enjoy!

February 25, 2013

argoOn what was a night many said there could be several big upsets, tonight’s Academy Awards was actually rather predictable. Argo took Picture, Editing and Adapted Screenplay while Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway won their respective races. Ang Lee topped Speilberg for Best Director while Quentin Tarantino won Original Screenplay for Django Unchained. One big surprise was a tie (only the 6th tie in Oscar history) for Sound Editing between Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall… Take a look at all the winners below and watch here for more on the show, Seth MacFarlane’s decent hosting debut and the amazing performances by Jennifer Hudson and the cast of Les Miserables tomorrow.

They’re Here~ My Big Bold 2013 Oscar WINNER Predictions

February 20, 2013

lesmis-dream630-jpg_220136It’s been one heck of a topsy-turvy Oscar season. Since September, there seemed to be a different film out in front each week with Lincoln, Les Miserables, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook all looking like the film to beat. However, after all of the Guild Awards (SAG, DGA, PGA) and the Golden Globes, it has become clear that Argo is the true front-runner and likely will win Best Picture. If it does, it will be the first film to do so without a Best Director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. And it may also be one of the only wins the film takes home. It has a shot in Screenplay, Editing and Score, but we’ll see… There are other sure things but there are 3 big races totally up in the air and we may see the awards spread over several different films… So, just who do I think will win? Take a look at my big, bold and totally unscientific Oscar predictions below and watch the big Academy Award show Sunday the 24th on ABC.

Best Picture:
Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty
Will win: Argo
Should win: Les Miserables
~ spoiler: Lincoln

Best Actor:
Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), Denzel Washington (Flight)
Will win: Daniel Day-Lewis
Should win: Hugh Jackman (hello, degree of difficulty people)
~ spoiler: Hugh Jackman, but let’s be honest. Daniel Day-Lewis has this in the bag.

Best Actress:
Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Quevanzhane Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Naomi Watts (The Impossible)
Will win: Jennifer Lawrence
Should win: Jessica Chastain
~ spoiler: Emmanuelle Riva
* This race is really becoming a toss-up. Lawrence is the smart money, but many feel Chastain deserves it more and Riva has the growing buzz and would be the oldest Best Actress winner ever…

Best Supporting Actor:
Alan Arkin (Argo), Robert DeNiro (Silver Linings Playbook), Tommy Lee Jones (Licoln), Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)
Will win: Robert DeNiro
Should win: Tommy Lee Jones
~ spoiler: Christoph Waltz
* this is the biggest toss-up race of all. Any of the five could win (even Arkin if there’s an Argo sweep). Weinstein company is spending tons of $ to remind voters that DeNiro hasn’t won in 32 years, so I think that may give him the edge.

Best Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams (The Master), Sally Field (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), Helen Hunt (The Sessions), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook)
Will & Should win: Anne Hathaway
~ spoiler: Sally Field, but let’s be honest Hathaway can not lose.

* this race is also incredibly close with Spielberg, Lee and Russell all having a strong shot…

Will win: Django Unchained
Should win: Zero Dark Thirty
~spoiler: Amour

“Argo” is Unstoppable at the BAFTAS

February 11, 2013

argoArgo continued to roll over the competition this awards season as it took home three big awards at today’s BAFTA Awards, aka the British Oscars. The film won Best Picture, Best Editing and Best Director for Ben Affleck who has pretty much won every precursor directing award for this film but still has no shot at the Oscar because he mysteriously wasn’t even nominated. Nonetheless, watch for Argo to take Best Picture in two weeks… What we don’t know is who will win Best Actress. Yesterday I said Jessica Chastain might beat Jennifer Lawrence with an Emmanuelle Riva spoiler. Well, today Riva beat both her younger counterparts and now seems like a true contender for that spoil. Winning Best Actor was Daniel Day-Lewis while Anne Hathaway also continued her sweep with the Supporting Actress Award. Her film Les Miserables actually won the most awards tonight with 4 BAFTAS… Django Unchained picked up two for Original Screenplay and Christoph Waltz in the very competitive Supporting Actor Category… Skyfall walked away with the Best British Film honor while Silver Linings Playbook usurped Lincoln in the Adapted Screenplay category… Take a look at all the winners below and head to the BAFTA website here for more.

Highlights from GLEE’s “Diva” Episode

February 8, 2013

Last night, Glee went into full on “Diva” mode. There was a sing-off between Kurt (Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer) and Rachel (Emmy nominee Lea Michelle) on the classic Les Miserables lament “Bring Him Home” at NYADA while back at McKinley, all the kids were channelling their inner divas. The best numbers belonged to Naya Rivera‘s Santana returning as she confronted her still lingering love for Brittany and her future and to Jenna Ushkowitz’s Tina who finally got to go center stage with her unrequited love for Blaine and a massive Madonna number. Big props to Glee for finally utilizing Ushkowitz this season. She has waited long enough for the spotlight and just keeps turning it out like a true diva in return. Kudos Tina Cohen Chang!… With that said, take a look at some of my favorite performances from last night’s show and catch Glee Thursday nights on Fox.

Glee “Diva” (Unique, Tina, Blaine, Marley, Brittany and Kitty)

Glee “Girl on Fire” (Santana)

Glee “Nutbush City Limits” (Santana)

Glee “Make No Mistake She’s Mine” (Santana and Sam)

Glee “Hung Up” (Tina)

Glee “Bring Him Home” (Rachel & Kurt)

“Argo” Surprises at the SAG Awards

January 28, 2013

Argo-ledeThere were actually a few surprises at tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards and the biggest one was in the top category of Best Film Ensemble where Argo upset the supposed front-runners Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook. With this win, Argo continues to dominate the awards circuit and I’m declaring it unstoppable to win Best Picture at the Oscars next month… The other surprises came with Downton Abbey’s win in the Drama Ensemble category over Homeland, Bryan Cranston defeating Homeland‘s Damian Lewis, and a shocker win for Tina Fey…. Going back to the film categories Daniel Day-Lewis and Anne Hathaway continued their reign while Jennifer Lawrence beat out her chief rival Jessica Chastain in what continues to be a very tight Best Actress race. The Supporting Actor race also remains very exciting as Tommy Lee Jones won his first big award of the season giving us 3 different winners in this category this season following Philip Seymour Hoffman at the Critics Choice Awards and Christoph Waltz at the Golden Globes. Does this mean we’ll have another new winner at the Oscars? Stay tuned… in the meantime, take a look at all the SAG Award Winners below.

“Hansel and Gretel” Hunt Down the Box Office

January 27, 2013

hansel_and_gretel_witch_hunters_2013-1920x10801The new film Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is based on the classic story, but turned into an action adventure. The new spin on the tale was able to beat all the competition at the box office with a $19 million opening. However, that’s a long way to go before it can reach profitability. At least it did better than the other two new films which both were DOA. Jason Statham‘s latest Parker (co-starring Jennifer Lopez~ did you even know she was in it?) took in a paltry $7 million while the all-star comedy Movie 43 barely landed $ 5 million… Yes, January remains a dumping ground for some bad films unfortunately. At least we had a lot of Oscar contenders holding up well like Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook. So, take a look at their grosses below and head to Box Office Mojo for all the numbers here.
