The Women of “Idol” wow at the Billboard Awards

May 21, 2012

Last night’s Billboard Awards aired on ABC, but there was a whole lot of Fox going on as three previous winners of American Idol stole the show. Those three women Grammy winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood and Grammy nominee Jordin Sparks all gave astounding performances that made everyone else look pretty silly. Kelly did her amazing new single “Dark Side” and it was simply a gorgeous vocal (and she looked wonderful too) while Carrie threw down the gauntlet with a soaring version of her next single “Blown Away”. However, I actually think the best performance of the night belonged to Sparks who tackled the late great Whitney Houston‘s “I Will Always Love You” in a special tribute to her. It was beautiful, powerful and emotional and a fitting tribute to this brilliant lost singer who Sparks will costar with in her final film this summer, Sparkle.
There were other performances of course and I will rank them below, but the night was also about awards as Billboard handed out trophies for the biggest hits, albums and artists of the past year. Adele (who was conspicuously absent and thus all of her wins were off camera) was the big winner with 12 awards including Artist and Album of the Year. LMFAO grabbed 6 awards while Coldplay nabbed 4. For more on the awards show which also featured tributes to Stevie Wonder and the recently passed Queen of Disco Donna Summer and all the winners, head to Billboard here. And check out all the winners below.

Madonna Grabs her 41st # 1 Dance Hit!

March 17, 2012

It seems like only an hour ago, I posted two clips from Madonna’s new album… Oh wait, I did, but now we have more Madge news. Today, Billboard just announced Madonna has the new # 1 Dance hit in the nation with “Give Me All Your Luvin’” featuring Nicky Minaj & M.I.A. The track with remixes by Nicky Romero, Laidback Luke and LMFAO rose to the top in only 4 weeks and becomes her record-breaking 41st # 1 Dance hit. She has now had # 1 hits on this chart in four different decades going back to her first chart topper “Holiday/Lucky Star” in 1983. She extends her lead for most # 1s on this chart as Janet Jackson is waaaaaaaaaay behind in second with 19… I also think she will be extending it to 42 chart toppers as her new single “Girl Gone Wild” is exploding on the dance chart (and expect several more smashes from the new album MDNA out March 26th). For more on this story, head to Billboard here. And check out the list of all of Madonna’s Dance # 1′s below.

Relive Madonna’s Magnificent Super Bowl Appearance

February 6, 2012

There’s no disputing that Madonna is the Queen of Pop. The Grammy winning superstar proved it yet again tonight stealing the show at the Super Bowl with a stupendous performance. She was simply brilliant in a medley of her biggest hits “Vogue”, “Music”, “Open Your Hear” and “Like A Prayer”. She also employed guests LMFAO on the “Music/Party Rock Anthem” section, Cee Lo Green on “Heart” and  ”Prayer” (with a touch of “Express Yourself”) and M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj on her awesome new single “Give Me All Your Luvin’”. After the performance, the song flew up to # 3 on iTunes and is rising fast. Not too bad for a 53-year-old. Madge is simply unstoppable. Her new album, MDNA, is already # 1 in 41 countries from pre-orders too. It’s astounding and now you can watch her fantastic performance again. Take a look below…. Oh, and let’s just take a moment to acknowledge the great sentiment of “World Peace” she left as her last image. She’s got class too. Long Live the Queen!

Ricky Martin is Sexy and He Knows It!

February 3, 2012

Grammy Award winner Ricky Martin has always been labeled a sexy superstar, and now he’s declaring it on national TV. You see he’s about to guest star on Glee as a new Spanish teacher and his introductory number to the glee club kids is LMFAO‘s recent # 1 smash “Sexy and I Know It”. The clip for the song just hit the web and Ricky turns it out! It looks like another great episode for the show and if Ricky follows the lead of other wonderful Glee guest stars like Kristin Chenoweth and Gwyneth Paltrow, he could grab an Emmy nomination… Speaking of entertainment awards, Ricky may find himself up for a Tony Award for the much-anticipated revival of Evita that is set to hit Broadway on March 12th. Martin will play Che alongside Olivier Award nominee Elena Roger as Evita and Tony winner Michael Cerveris (Assassins) as Peron. This will be Ricky’s second stint on the Great White Way after performing in Les Miserables in the 90′s.  For more on that show, head here and watch Ricky Martin bring some Latin flavor to Glee this Tuesday 2/7 on Fox.

Adele just won’t quit. Michael Buble throws down Some Christmas Cheer on Chart newcomers Rihanna, Nickelback and Daughtry

December 1, 2011

Americans are clearly in the mood for a Canadian Christmas as Michael Buble’s holiday album eecked out a victory to be the biggest album in the country for the post Thanksgiving week. His album narrowly beat fellow Canadians Nickelback with their latest crapfest, Here and Now, by just 2%. Rihanna had to settle for a 3rd place debut for her 6th top ten album, Talk that Talk. At least she still has the # 1 song in the country with “We Found Love”… Other debuts came from Mary J. Blige who grabbed her 9th top ten record with My Life II: the Journey Continues Act 1 and Daughtry whose Break the Spell became their third consecutive top ten. (Unfortunately, it’s also their first to not hit the top)… Speaking of reality tv vet Chris Daughtry, he’s joined in the top ten by American Idol’s current champ Scotty McCreery who returns to the upper echelons with his former chart topper, Clear as Day, at # 9. One of his competitors from this season, James Durbin has a much less exciting debut way down at #36 with Memories of a Beautiful Disaster selling only 28,000 copies. It’s unlikely he’ll come anywhere close to McCreery’s current total of 587,000 or even runner-up Lauren Alaina’s total of 162,000 for her former top ten record. Faring even worse than Durbin was the winner of The Voice, Javier Colon, whose debut tanked with just 9,900 copies sold for #139.
Debuting outside of the top ten was Taylor Swifts live record Speak Now Live World Tour at # 11, Big Time Rush’s new one Elevate at # 12 and the Ultimate Hits from Bob Segar & the Silver Bullet Band at # 19…. For more on all these numbers, head to Billboard here and check out the new top ten below.

Top Ten Albums on the Billboard 200:
1. Christmas- Michael Buble (last week~ 2)
2. Here and Now- Nickelback (debut)

8. Break the Spell- Daughtry (debut)
9. Clear as Day- Scotty McCreery (lw~ 13)
10. Mylo Xyloto- Coldplay (lw~ 9)

Baby Daddy (?) Bieber Leads the Charts

November 9, 2011

Justin Bieber just can’t get out of the news. Following the claims that the 17 year-old fathered some chick’s baby (which he vehemently denies), the Biebs got some good news today as he nabbed his third # 1 album. Selling 210,000 copies, Bieber’s Under the Mistletoe debuts on top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart making it the first Christmas album from a solo male artist to debut in that position. (On a personal note, I can’t stand hearing any Christmas music til at least after Thanksgiving~ better yet mid December. So, please don’t be playin’ the Biebs holiday tidings near me, lol). Justin also lays claim to the title of most # 1 albums (3) by an artist under 18 years-old breaking his tie with LeAnn Rimes who had two…. Now, it wasn’t all about tween heart-throbs on the chart this week as 5 other records debuted in the top ten from rapper Wale, Grammy winning country singer Miranda Lambert, Grammy nominees Florence + the Machine, R& B crooner Tyrese and former X-Factor contender Susan Boyle whose latest gave her a third top 5 album, albeit with a huge drop off in sales compared to her last two…. For more on this chart, head to Billboard here and check out the top ten albums below.

Top Ten Albums on the Billboard 200:
1. Under the Mistletoe- Justin Bieber (debut)
2. Ambition- Wale (debut)
3. Four the Record- Miranda Lambert (debut)
4. Someone to Watch Over Me- Susan Boyle (debut)

8. Christmas- Michael Buble (lw~ 5)
9. Open Invitation- Tyrese (debut)
10. Stronger- Kelly Clarkson (lw~ 2)

And here’s Miranda Lambert’s rocking current top 5 country smash “Baggage Claim”. Watch for her to perform it on the CMA Awards tonight on ABC.

Looking at the Hot 100 Singles chart, Rihanna makes it two weeks in a row with “We Found Love” featuring Calvin Harris. She is likely to hold on another week despite the quickly rising LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It”. Take a gander at the new top ten below.
