Michael Buble and P!nk Rule the Charts

May 6, 2013

Sorry for the delay on my post about the biggest hits in music this week, but I’ve been dealing with some “real” work stuff as my short comedy Dirty Talk continues across the festival circuit. (We just played Boston and won the Audience Award at the Miami LGBT Film Fest!!) … But back to the music world, Grammy winner Michael Buble nabs his fourth # 1 album as To Be Loved debuts atop the Billboard 200 Albums chart. He holds off fellow Grammy winner and American Idol winner Fantasia who lands at # 2 with Side Effects of You, her third top ten album and second # 1 R&B Album. Also debuting in the top ten are alt-rockers Phoenix, metal head Rob Zombie and Will.I.Am with a slightly disappointing #9 debut for his latest. Take a look at the full top ten below and head to Billboard for more on all the Albums charts.

Top Ten Albums on the Billboard 200:
1. To Be Loved- Michael Buble (debut)
2. Side Effects of You- Fantasia (debut)

9. #willpower- Will.I.Am (debut)
10. The Truth About Love- P!nk (lw~ 10)

You saw P!nk‘s long running hit album hanging on for another week in the top ten above, and a big reason why is the third top ten smash from the album “Just Give Me A Reason” featuring Nate Ruess which holds on to the top spot of the Hot 100 Singles Chart for a third week. She fends off a strong charge by Macklmore & Ryan Lewis and will have to face some new competition by Swedish dance duo Icona Pop who charge into the top ten with their fist top ten hit “I Love It”. Take a gander at the new top ten below and head to Billboard for all the singles genre charts here.

Top Ten Singles on the Hot 100:
1. “Just Give Me A Reason”- P!nk w/ Nate Reuss (lw~ 1)
2. “Can’t Hold Us Down”- Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (lw~ 2)

Will Chris Mann be the First Real Success from “The Voice”?

October 29, 2012

I have been a bit critical of The Voice since its inception. The show is really only about “the voice” during the blind audition rounds, but soon turns into a competition about “the whole package” in the subsequent weeks. The first two seasons drove me nuts with annoying judges banter, selection of contestants that weren’t as good as their booted counterparts and ridiculous over-production, and don’t get me started on the “social media” correspondent crap. Plus, honestly with so many contestants, you don’t really develop much of a connection with the singers and the show became all about the judges. That being said, season 3 has improved on all accounts. The judges have found a nice and less-irritating camaraderie and there’s some great talent along with new twists like “the steal” which make the latter rounds much more interesting. So, I’m pleased and haven’t tuned out yet like I did in the previous seasons.
With all that being said, I still wonder if The Voice will ever produce a viable hit maker. Season 1′s top contenders bombed with their debut albums and does anyone even remember who won season 2? Not likely. (It’s sad too since there are some good singers. They should take some lessons from American Idol which continues to produce big stars. This year’s Idol  winner Phillip Phillip’s coronation single, “Home”, has gone double platinum already!) … However, there may just be a surprise success from the show in top 4 finalist from season 2 pop-opera singer Chris Mann. He was the good-looking fellow from Team Xtina who was like a mix of Josh Groban and Michael Buble. And that’s exactly what he sounds like on his debut single “Roads”. The beautiful ballad is already climbing the AC charts and his first album, Roads, hits stores and digital retailers tomorrow. I think he has the best shot of actually becoming successful for any contestant from The Voice because of his genre of music. He fits the AC mold very well and doesn’t have to fight for pop radio airplay. On a side note, he clearly had the best voice of anyone his season, so it would be a fitting compliment to the show if he is actually successful and gives credence to the show’s title. Take a listen to his new single below and let me know. Do you think his voice should’ve won and will he actually succeed where everyone else from The Voice fails? … For more on Chris Mann, head here.

December 7, 2011

After the boosts of last week’s post-Thanksgiving sales, this week the music charts saw big declines and no big new entries. That left us with some boring top tens. Check out the latest below where Michael Buble grabs a 2nd week at #1 on the Album charts and Rihanna holds for a 6th week on top of the Singles charts. Michael Buble throws down Some Christmas Cheer on Chart newcomers Rihanna, Nickelback and Daughtry

December 1, 2011

Americans are clearly in the mood for a Canadian Christmas as Michael Buble’s holiday album eecked out a victory to be the biggest album in the country for the post Thanksgiving week. His album narrowly beat fellow Canadians Nickelback with their latest crapfest, Here and Now, by just 2%. Rihanna had to settle for a 3rd place debut for her 6th top ten album, Talk that Talk. At least she still has the # 1 song in the country with “We Found Love”… Other debuts came from Mary J. Blige who grabbed her 9th top ten record with My Life II: the Journey Continues Act 1 and Daughtry whose Break the Spell became their third consecutive top ten. (Unfortunately, it’s also their first to not hit the top)… Speaking of reality tv vet Chris Daughtry, he’s joined in the top ten by American Idol’s current champ Scotty McCreery who returns to the upper echelons with his former chart topper, Clear as Day, at # 9. One of his competitors from this season, James Durbin has a much less exciting debut way down at #36 with Memories of a Beautiful Disaster selling only 28,000 copies. It’s unlikely he’ll come anywhere close to McCreery’s current total of 587,000 or even runner-up Lauren Alaina’s total of 162,000 for her former top ten record. Faring even worse than Durbin was the winner of The Voice, Javier Colon, whose debut tanked with just 9,900 copies sold for #139.
Debuting outside of the top ten was Taylor Swifts live record Speak Now Live World Tour at # 11, Big Time Rush’s new one Elevate at # 12 and the Ultimate Hits from Bob Segar & the Silver Bullet Band at # 19…. For more on all these numbers, head to Billboard here and check out the new top ten below.

Top Ten Albums on the Billboard 200:

7. 21- Adele (lw~ 3)
8. Break the Spell- Daughtry (debut)
9. Clear as Day- Scotty McCreery (lw~ 13)

Before I go, here’s a fun treat, the current # 2 in the country, LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It”. Watch for this one to finally hit the top next week.

Michael Buble v. Mariah Carey~ A “Christmas” Battle

November 17, 2011

As any of my friends could tell (and I’ve mentioned here before), I am no fan of Christmas music until at least the second week of December. However, the music business and pretty much every other retailer in the country could care less what I think because new holiday music releases are everywhere. And for everyone, I might like (the second Glee Christmas record for example), there are a ton I will despise (ahem, Justin Bieber…). Currently, the big Xmas album comes from Canadian crooner Michael Buble who seems to suit this season very well with his soothing jazzy vocals. Unfortunately, there is one giant flaming stinkbomb of fruitcake in his new collection, an incredibly horrifying remake of Mariah Carey’s classic “All I Want for Christmas is You”. Carey’s song is one of my top 5 holiday faves (and that’s saying something because holiday music is not a genre I love). So, you can imagine just how bad it is, if he has desecrated one of the few Xmas songs I truly love. But the question is do you want to burn it with coal too? Check out his new single from his current # 2 Christmas album below and then listen to the awesome original by Carey. I defy anyone to admit they like Buble’s atrocious cover more than Carey’s. Let me hear what you think about these holiday tunes in the comments below… And um, Happy Thanksgiving people! (Yes, let’s concentrate on turkeys for the next week please).
