Even a Magnificent Prince Can’t Save the Dreadful Lip Synch, I mean Billboard Music Awards

May 20, 2013

prince-billboard-music-awards-2013-performance-videoWhat the hell Billboard? You represent the most popular music, songs and acts in the nation and you honor them with a show full of lip synching pop tarts? (Yes, I’m talking bout you Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and the incredibly whiny Justin Bieber). Seriously, it was the worst Billboard Awards show in history. Only a handful of acts actually sang live~ thank you Kasey Musgraves, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheerhan. And only the magnificent one, Prince, had a true standout performance. The legend who received the Billboard Icon Award seriously schooled all of the other acts. For an indepth look at my reaction to the Billboard Music Awards, head to my hilarious Twitter feed here.
In terms of the awards, which honored the biggest selling artists, singles, albums and most played songs, the big winners were Swift, Bieber, One Direction, Adele, Rihanna, Maroon 5, Gotye, Nicki Minaj, and Madonna who took home 3 awards and made quite an entrance to accept the award…. For more on the show and the winners, head to Billboard here. Then, scroll down for all the winners below.

Adele and Carly Rae Jepsen~ “Call” them # 1

June 13, 2012

Adele just won’t stop… selling albums, that is, as her massive smash 21 returns to the top of the Billboard 200 Albums chart for a 24th frame at # 1. That run makes 21 the longest running # 1 album since Prince’s Purple Rain soundtrack grabbed 24 weeks on top in 1984. It also places in a tie for 6th place for the longest running # 1 album in history. Congrats Adele! With another 75,000 records sold, 21 has now totaled over 9.34 million in the U.S. which is unheard of these days when most hit albums struggle to get over 1 or 2 million total…. Adele (whose album has never left the top ten in its entire 68 week run) holds off a few debuts from Alan Jackson who grabs his 12th top ten record with Thirty Miles West at # 2 and legendary group The Beach Boys who grab their highest charting album since 1974 at # 3 with That’s Why God Made the Radio. Other top ten debuts come from Neil Young, Big K.R.I.T., Curren$y and Brandi Carlisle. For more on Adele’s feats and this chart, head to Billboard here and check out the new top ten below.

The single is pretty much inescapable on the radio and is the top-selling single in the country for 4 weeks now…. The other big news comes Katy Perry‘s “Wide Awake” which flies into the top ten at # 9 giving her an 11th top ten hit! Take a look at the new top ten below and for more on all the charts, head here.

It’s fun. for Adele at the Top of the Charts

March 7, 2012

Ok, chart watchers, did you get that pun in the title of this article? If you did, you noticed that I spelled fun “fun.” which is precisely the name of the group at the top of the new Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart as the alterna-boy band rises to # 1 with “We Are Young”. Their track which was featured on Glee and in the big Super Bowl ad displaces Kelly Clarkson‘s “Stronger” in a tight race. They may have some competition for the zenith in the next few weeks at Gotye’s debut hit “Somebody that I Used to Know” flies into the top ten this week while Brit boy band The Wanted make more strong gains moving up to # 4. Check out the new top ten below.

Top Ten Songs on the Billboard Hot 100:

Adele also has her debut album, 19, at # 7 while the late great Whitney Houston holds down three spots in the top ten. Kelly is back on Top of the Singles Chart as Adele and Whitney Dominate the Billboard 200

February 29, 2012

The same three ladies who have been making a lot of noise over the past month continue to monopolize the pop charts again this week. Kelly Clarkson returns to the summit of Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart while Adele and Whitney Houston dominate half of the top ten albums on the Billboard 200.
With a 22nd week on top, Adele’s 21 now is the longest running album at # 1 since Prince’s Purple Rain soundtrack in 1984/85 (he held for 24 weeks). She also is at # 7 with her debut album, 19. Occupying three spots in the top-tier is the late great Houston whose Greatest Hits holds at # 2 while The Bodyguard and Whitney Houston make massive gains. Those records climb with physical albums finally being delivered to retailers following her untimely passing. (Most of her sales for the past 2 weeks have been on the digital front). For more on the top albums, head to Billboard here and check out the new top ten with debuts by fun., Tyga, and Chiddy Bang below.

With the Grammy glow over, several tracks from Adele and Houston fall out of the top ten allowing a big jump for British boy band The Wanted with “Glad You Came”. (The Glee version of the single also debuts at # 90 this week featuring vocals from guest villain Grant Gustin and the Warblers). First Look~ Beyonce “1 + 1″

August 26, 2011

Will a glowing shiny and glittery Beyonce save her latest album? That’s the question some of you may ask after seeing her brand new video, “1 +1″. The Prince-like ballad is the third release after her commercial and critically disappointing album, 4. The record is her worst selling disc to date and has produced no big hits. The first single, “Girls Who Run the World” was a giant flop and “Best Thing I Never Had” (which I actually like mind you) barely hit the top 20 on the Hot 100 Singles chart. Poor B has never struggled like this with an album or her singles. I mean she had 5 hits in a row from her last album, I Am Sasha Fierce. So, it’s a strange time for the Grammy winner… However, this new single and a performance at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards could ignite the public’s interest. I, for one, at least like this song and video (one of the few tracks on 4 I actually like. I gave the album a “C-” grade overall)… If anything, the video should get a lot of play on Vevo and YouTube as B is all shiny, sexy, wet, sweaty and doing some serious hair flipping. You can’t go wrong with that… So, what do you think of the new clip? Will it save the album? Or should Beyonce just move on to her next project. Check it out below.

Gwyneth is back on Glee

March 5, 2011

Oscar winner turned country/pop singing sensation Gwyneth Paltrow is back on Glee this week in her sure to be Emmy nominated turn as the wacky substitute Holly Holiday and this time, she has sex on her mind… Ok, get your mind out of the gutter (well, a little out of the gutter). You see Holly returns to sub for the Sex Education teacher and apparently the Glee kids need some extra counseling as their hormones have been running rampant. Check out the first clip (SPOILER AHEAD) from Tuesday night’s show where Paltrow’s Holly performs Joan Jett’s top 20 hit from 1982 “Do You Wanna Touch Me?” It’s pretty great and her line at the end is hilarious… It also appears that Mr. Shu (Matthew Morrison) and Holly will be dueting on Prince’s 1986 # 1 hit “Kiss” (that’s been in the promos) as they do a bit of flirting themselves. One more song reportedly in the show is “Animal” by the Neon Trees which will be sung by Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss). Enjoy the clip below and watch Glee Tuesday on Fox.
