American Idol Quick Wrap 3/6/13~ The Guys Fight Back

March 7, 2013

Paul-Jolley1So, this season is all about the ladies on American Idol and um, yes, it is. However, a few guys are desperately trying to throw a wrench in the female domination. And while a few are definitely in the mix, they still pale in comparison to the fairer sex. That said, I was impressed by the improvement of a few and the confidence of the one guy we know is gonna go far, Lazaro. That adorable kid who is overcoming his stutter and confidence issues to be a real star is the only guy that I’m 100% confident is going thru to the finals next week. But, I do have my favorites and I think some of them have a shot. Just who are they? Take a look at my rankings for Guys Night below.

American Idol Rankings 3/6/13~ The Guys

1. Paul: my favorite male singer in the competition is serving up theatrical pop country and I’m loving it just as much as I love RuPaul’s Drag Race (which is a lot, lol). He has a great voice and improved greatly over last week with his cover of the Christina Aguilera/Blake Shelton duet “Just a Fool”. (Yes, I love when Paul sings the divas like Carrie and Xtina!) I really think he could go far if he just really embraces who he is. Paul also is one of only three white guys in the race and there is always at least one white guy in the finals. It’s gonna be Paul.
2. Devin: now this guy has a beautiful voice with a glorious tone and he gave arguably the best vocal tonight on Perry Como’s “Impossible”. His bilingual shtick could get old, but he’s so good at it and he totally has the Latin vote. His personality was also shining brighter tonight as he seemed genuine and humble. Well done.
3. Lazaro: well, someone is certainly coming out of his shell these days. Easily the most popular guy in the race right now, Lazaro also gave his best performance to date on “Feeling Good”. While it was miles behind the brilliant take Adam Lambert did a few years back, it was quite assured and felt natural for Lazaro. I’m glad he is continuing to grow as a singer and performer. And yes, he’s adorable like a puppy!
4. Curtis: ok, let’s be honest. I can’t stand this arrogant affected guy or his stank faces and I am not buying the Jesus juice he is selling. However, damn the guy can sing. His performance of R. Kelly’s # 1 smash “I Believe I Can Fly” started off cheesy, but then he took it to church and soared to the rafters. I think he’ll move on pretty easily. However, he needs some humility stat. Take a lesson from last season’s Joshua Ledet please Curtis!
5. Burnell: there is just something compelling about Burnell and his lovely and subtle take on “I’m Here” from The Color Purple was very good. He was out shown vocally by a few guys tonight, but he is quite likable and I’m excited to see what he’ll do next.
6. Nick: this talented guy is sorely lacking in star quality unfortunately. But he did have a strong performance with his nice reworking of the Goo Goo Doll’s massive 1998 hit “Iris”. He sits right in the cozy Hot AC wheelhouse that Idol vets (Kris Allen, David Cook, Phillip Phillips, Daughtry) do so well and that could help him. Yet, I still feel like he may suffer under the weight of bigger personalities.
7. Vincent: one of those bigger personalities, Vincent, had a great week last week. However, he squandered it all with an off pitch and plodding version of Boyz II Men’s # 1 90′s classic “End of the Road”. All the good will he won a week ago is not likely to carry him through to the finals if you ask me.
8. Cortez: well, this guy looks and acts like a star. I just wish he performed and sounded like one too. While I liked his take on Bruno Mars’ recent chart topper “Locked Out of Heaven”, it wasn’t all that memorable and even a little karaoke. Sorry Cortez.
9. Elijah: while tonight’s performance of Rihanna’s current top 5 hit “Stay” was a million times better than last week’s train wreck, Elijah still has no chance in hell of moving forward. He’s just not even on the same level as the other guys (who aren’t even on the same level as most of the girls to boot).
10. Charlie: um I don’t really want to throw salt on his wounds, but Charlie’s take on that Genesis song was horrifyingly bad. I hope his experience on the show doesn’t wound him for life, but luckily it should be over tomorrow.

Predictions~

Sailing Through: Lazaro
Likely Going Through: Curtis, Devin
I think they’ll make it: Paul, Burnell
Fighting for a wild card: Vincent, Nick
Buh Bye forever: Charlie, Elijah, Cortez

So, the boys did much better than I thought they would. But really, it’s not gonna be enough to stop the lady train… At least, not yet… So, who do you think was the best tonight and might be able to keep up with the girls? Sound off below and watch American Idol tomorrow night for the results and to see who is lucky enough to grab a “secret” wild card spot too.

Highlights from Glee’s Thanksgiving Episode

December 1, 2012

While it seems that most viewers are enjoying the newly invigorated season of Glee, I have to say I am loving it for the most part (aside from that Glease debacle)… Anywho, this week was one of the best episodes of the seasons as they Glee kids prepped for Sectionals and Rachel and Kurt celebrated Thanksgiving in New York. Take a look at a couple of my favorite performances from the week.

First up, Rachel (Emmy/Golden Globe nominee Lea Michelle) and Kurt (Emmy nominee/Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer) take on the Scissor Sisters recent # 1 dance hit “Let’s Have a Kiki” mashed up with the classic “Turkey Lurkey Song”. They’re also joined by Emmy/Golden Globe winner Sarah Jessica Parker as Kurt’s mentor and RuPaul’s Drag Rae alum Shangela.

Next we have the Glee club’s fun take on the worldwide # 1 smash phenomena “Gangnam Style” by Psy with solos by Sam (Chord Overstreet) and Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) that has a dramatic ending!

The Warblers were also a big part of the episode performing Flo Rida‘s recent #1 hit “Whistle” and One Directions’s former # 3 hit “Live While We’re Young”. Check out the later featuring Nolan Gerard Funk and Grant Gustin below.

Finally, here’s my favorite song of the episode “Homeward Bound/Home” a mashup of the Simon & Garfunkel classic and the current top ten hit by American Idol winner Phillip Phillips. It’s a beautiful interpretation featuring our favorite classic Glee characters Finn (Cory Monteith), Quinn (Diana Agron), Puck (Mark Salling), Mercedes (Amber Riley), Mike (Harry Shum Jr.) and Santana (Naya Rivera).

Some Thoughts on Today’s Emmy Nominations…

July 20, 2012

So, today we saw several of the usual and deserving suspects grab multiple Emmy nominations like Modern Family, Breaking Bad and Mad Men. However, there were some big surprises and some upsetting snubs… Let’s take a look at some of those.

Good Surprises:

~ The Acting Love for Downton Abbey with Michelle Dockery (Mary), Hugh Bonneville (Lord Granville), Joanne Froggat (Anna), Brendan Coyle (Mr. Carson), and Jim Carter (Mr. Bates) all grabbing nods alongside last year’s winner Maggie Smith.
~ Anna Gunn finally grabbing a nod for Breaking Bad
~ Martha Plimpton getting a nod for The Good Wife despite being snubbed for Raising Hope
~ Veep getting nominated for Comedy Series. I thought only Julia Louis Dreyfuss would be recognized, so I’m thrilled
~ Max Greenfield, the standout performer on New Girl, joined his show’s star Zooey Deschanel with a nomination
~ Merrit Weaver finally getting a nomination for her hysterical work on Nurse Jackie … and yay for Edie Falco still getting recognized for her wonderful work too in one of the show’s best seasons.
~ Margaret Cho getting a nod for her side-splittingly hilarious work on 30 Rock
~ the continued love for Cat Deeley and So You Think You Can Dance
~ Jean Smart grabbing a nod for her brilliant turn on the cancelled Harry’s Law (joining the show’s star Kathy Bates who also grabbed a nod for her guest turn on Two and A Half Men)

I’m also very pleased in general with the nominations for Homeland, Breaking Bad, Modern Family, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Game Change, Dot Marie Jones, Game of Thrones and all the actors from The Good Wife.

Now the bad…

~ Girls getting nods for series and star Lena Dunham. While I appreciate that Dunham is not your usual tv star, I despise this self-satisfied horribly unfunny show and its unlikable characters
~ The Voice got a nod over American Idol? That’s a tragedy!
~ Jon Cryer, Don Cheadle and Larry David all got nods over Parks & Recreation’s fantastic Adam Scott? That’s not right!
~ Boardwalk Empire‘s nods, ugh… They should rename it BOREDwalk Empire

And now the shocking snubs….

~ Where the hell is Parks and Recreation in Comedy Series and double, where the hell is Nick Offerman in Supporting Actor Comedy
~ So many Glee snubs, but the biggest were for Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch and guest star Matt Bomer... I guess the industry is no longer singing their tune…
~ Where in the world is The Good Wife for Drama Series?!!!
~ Former nominees left out in the cold: John Slattery (Mad Men), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Betty White (Hot in Cleveland), Jane Krakowski (30 Rock), Alan Cumming (The Good Wife), Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Laura Linney (The Big C), Mirielle Enos (The Killing), Michelle Forbes (The Killing) and Hugh Laurie (House) who will sadly never have won for his iconic character.

There are tons more omissions that are upsetting like Lena Heady (Game of Thrones), John Noble and Anna Torv (Fringe), the rest of the cast of The Killing and the show for that matter, Happy Endings and its stars Casey Wilson and Damon Wayans Jr, everyone on GCB, Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter), Matthew Perry and Carrie Preston‘s guest work on The Good Wife, Megan Hilty (Smash), Jeff Perry and Kerry Washinton (Scandal), RuPaul and RuPaul’s Drag Race and on and on…. I’m sure I’ve missed a bunch, but my head is spinning as it is… For more on Emmy’s snubs, multiple nominees (Poehler, Dunham, Bates, Michael J. Fox and more), statistics and interesting facts, head to Deadline Hollywood here and let me know who your thoughts on the nominations below.

Drag Race is Back- You Better Lip Synch for your Life!

January 31, 2012

One of the best reality competition shows in all of television returns tonight, and it’s… fierce! Of course, I’m talking about RuPaul’s Drag Race which begins season 4 on Logo this evening at 9pm. The show should’ve gotten Emmy nominations last year in the Reality Competition category and for its host/star RuPaul. Perhaps this season will be so “sickening”, that Emmy voters can’t ignore it. But seriously, why read these words when you can watch these images… Check out the teaser and show trailer for the new season below and get ready to “lip synch for your life” tonight on Logo.

All Hail the Great Picks for the Critic’s Choice TV Awards

June 6, 2011

I think they rarely get a pat on the back, but today I am congratulating the critics. You see, they announced their nominations for the first annual Critic’s Choice TV Awards and their choices are pretty fantastic. Along with the worthy Emmy winners like Mad Men and Modern Family (which led with 6 nominations), several unheralded but fantastic shows and actors reaped nominations including Justified, Fringe (plus stars John Noble and Anna Torv), Rupaul’s Drag Race, and Parks and Recreation. Plus how wonderful is it to finally see Courteney Cox and Busy Phillips from Cougar Town grab nominations. Other actors I was thrilled to see on the list include Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), Michelle Forbes & Mirielle Enos (The Killing), Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy), Shawn Hatosy (Southland), and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation )…. My American Idol Top 13 Power Rankings

March 4, 2011

Wow, that was actually a really drama filled results show last night on American Idol. I don’t know when I’ve been so invested and nervous about the results~ perhaps going all the way back to Daughtry’s ouster in 2005. But Idol certainly kept us watching as they first announced the new top ten (yay for all of them except Hayley), followed by six singers “lip synching for their lives”! Ooops, I got hypnotized by Rupaul’s Drag Race for a minute. I meant “singing for their survival”. The six chosen by the judges for those wild card performances were Robbie, Naima, Ashton, Stefano, Kendra and Jovanny (what?). First Ashton gave a divalicious fun perf despite a few wonky notes. Then, Stefano absolutely killed it in perhaps the best male vocal of the season. Kendra acquitted herself nicely followed by a sleepy turn by Jovanny. (Why oh why didn’t they give Tim another chance?). Naima next gave a heartfelt and emotional perf but was flat and all over the place, followed by a lovely spin on “Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” by Robbie. If I had picked it would’ve been Kendra, Stefano and Ashton (with Robbie a close fourth). Alas, the judges chose Naima and her unique individuality and tough back story over the more talented singers…. And thus, we had our top 13. Despite my quarries with two of them, this might be the best top 13 in the history of the show. Certainly it’s a very good way to start the finals…. And with these contenders in place, it’s now time to take a look at my first official, totally unscientific American Idol Power Rankings for the finals. And away we go!

American Idol Top 13 Power Rankings:
1. Lauren Alaina (ie: Kelly Underwood)~ this 16-year-old powerhouse has the pipes and the personality and could live up to Steven Tyler’s prediction that they found “the one”. Love her!
2. Jacob Lusk (ie Luther 2.0): he is overcome by the “spirit” every time he sings and his jovial personality and heart on his sleeve emotion are incredibly endearing.
3. Pia Toscano (ie: the pretty girl no one saw coming)~ she gave the best female performance of the season so far with “I’ll Stand by You” and catapulted herself to the front of the pack. Now, if she can maintain that momentum, she could own this thing. (Just perk up a little more in your interview packages please…)
4. Casey Abrams (ie: Grizzly Adams)~ this musician’s musician with the growl and the grin has sailed through the race so far. I just wonder how he will fit in with the theme weeks, but he’s already a big audience fave.
5. Scotty McCreery (ie: the country boy Alfred E. Newman)~ this good ole boy with the deep voice is winning in so many ways that he could be the first male country Idol winner. I just hope he shows a little versatility and doesn’t buy into his own hype. However, he has totally exceeded my expectations thus far, so good for him.
6. Thia Megia (ie: Charice 2.0)~ she was speechless upon entering the top ten last night and so were we after her tremendous rendition of “Out Here on My Own”. Now, if she can overcome the shyness and keep delivering vocals like she did on Thursday, she could be the more talented Jasmine Trias of the season and not the forgetful Ramielle Mullaby of the season…
7. Stefano Langone (ie: lil Bruno Mars)~ he sang for his life with Smokie Norful’s “I Need to Know” and gave himself arguably the first “moment” of the competition with his amazing and emotional turn. He’s fast become my second fave guy in the competition after Jacob and could go really far now that people know what he’s made of.
8. Karen Rodriguez (ie: Gloria Estefan 2.0)~ the bilingual beauty is playing up the Latina card to no end. But make no mistake, it’s her fantastic voice that helped her conquer Mariah’s “Hero”. Now, if she could dial back the pageant outfits…
9. Paul McDonald (ie: quirky guy with the pearly whites)~ he has perhaps the most definitive voice in the contest and his indie vibe is refreshing…. but is he a one trick pony?
10. Ashton Jones (ie: Diana Ross 2.0)~ she’s got the looks, the body and the personality. Now, if she can propel her vocals up to the level of her diva’tude, she could end up going as far as Syesha Mercado a couple of seasons ago.
11. James Durbin (Lambert-lite): this rockin’ wailer is already rather divisive, but you can’t deny his pipes. And his brotherly relationship with Langone only serves to help with his likability factor.
12. Naima Adedapo (ie: Nina Simone/India Arie 2.0)~ she just barely squeaked her way into the top 13 and will need to hone her vocals to stay on this journey. But she’s unique and has an underdog quality about her that is worth rooting for. Plus, Steven Tyler is squarely in her corner…
13. Haley Reinhart (ie: Myley 2.0)~ ok, how on Earth did she make the finals? She’s cloying, artificial, obnoxious and creepy… Yes, her voice is decent, but I doubt she’ll go much farther here… Watch for her to be on the chopping block next week.

And there you have it~ my take on just who is at the top of this game and who has some work to do. What do you think? Who are your favorites and do you like this top 13? Let me hear it in the comments below…. And watch next week when they sing “Songs by their Favorite Artists” on Wed night and we get the first big elimination on Thursday (which will also feature Adam Lambert doing an acoustic version of his new single “Aftermath”!)

And before I go, here’s an encore of Stefano’s incredible performance of “I Need to Know” from last night

The 10 Most Upsetting Emmy Snubs

July 8, 2010

Despite all the good news with today’s infusion of fresh blood at the Emmy Nominations, there were still some maddening omissions. For every wonderful Glee nomination, there was no love for Cougar Town or Fringe or their wonderful casts. And it doesn’t get any better in the reality categories with So You Think You Can Dance and Rupaul’s Drag Race being ignored in favor of the tired Amazing Race, the lackluster seasons of Project Runway and the atrocious year that American Idol had. That said, it’s time for another one of my lists. Take a look at my picks for the most glaringly upsetting Emmy snubs below.

1. Courtney Cox Arquette- after being denied some Emmy love for all 10 seasons of Friends, Courtney gets dissed again despite her hilarious and heartfelt work on the most underrated new show of last year Cougar Town. She leads a crack ensemble (also ignored by Emmy this year, argh) in one of the strongest comedies around. Come on Emmys, wake up!

2. Survivor- the grand daddy of all reality shows had the best season of any reality competition show this year with its incredibly entertaining and fascinating “Heroes v. Villains” cycle. Not only should it have been nominated, it deserved to win this year. (At least they have that one trophy from back in 2001).

3. So You Think You Can Dance & Cat Deeley: Cat is easily the most likable reality host around and arguable the best this side of Survivor’s Jeff Probst. She’s a mother hen, stands up for her charges and calls out the judges and the audience, doing it all with gorgeous flair and finesse. And her show SYTYCD is clearly the best and most relevant talent competition on the air. It should’ve taken the place of either Idol, Runway or The Race.

4. John Noble: as the insanely interesting and maddeningly irreverent genius Walter Bishop on Fringe, Noble is in a class of his own. He’s hilarious, infuriating, inventive and can bring a tear to your eye at any moment. I’d say he’s the only one who could’ve give Lost‘s Terry O’Quinn a run for his money in the Drama Supporting Actor Race.

5. Vanessa Williams: how this woman has never won an Emmy is beyond me. Or a Golden Globe or SAG award for that matter for her brilliant vicious and delectable performance as Wilhemina Slater on the dearly departed Ugly Betty. (Side Note, let’s throw in the criminally never nominated Michael Urie here too. His side-splitting hilarity and grounded honesty gave weight to his super fabulous Marc St. James on Betty for years as well.)

6. Ed O’Neil: poor Ed was the only adult actor from breakout hit Modern Family NOT to receive a nomination this morning. The veteran is just as funny and fantastic as his younger counterparts and should’ve been recognized. Perhaps next year, he’ll move up to the Lead category where I think he would more easily land a nod.

7. Rupaul & Rupaul’s Drag Race: with all the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent in the world, Rupaul and his namesake show are the most intoxicating guilty pleasure on tv. But it’s not all fluff the show has a dramatic undercurrent about those fighting for equality and honoring their true voice. It’s a shame more people haven’t embraced this wonderful and dynamically entertaining show.

8. Josh Holloway: like Matthew Fox, Holloway had never received any kudos for his great work on Lost. Unfortunately that losing streak continued this year for Holloway (not Fox) which is all the more upsetting because it was arguably his strongest work to date.

9. Travis Wall: the former contestant and current choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance gave us amazing numbers that pierced the heart, challenged our preconceived notions about dance and pushed his dancers to the limit. It’s a crime he was overlooked. For, proof, check out this amazing piece featuring Jeanine and Jason from last summer.

10. Annie Wersching: as the terribly tormented Renee Walker in the final season of 24, Wershing was a live wire of angst, fury, pain and searing emotion. She stole Jack Bauer’s heart and our hearts this season, but like her character, our hopes for some Emmy love were gunned down.

So, those are my 10 biggest and most upsetting Emmy snubs this morning. There are plenty more to talk about like the omission of Sally Field (Brothers and Sisters), Merrit Weaver (Nurse Jackie), the ladies of Greys Anatomy, plus no love for Better Off Ted. I mean, I could go on for days. Instead, I’m going to concentrate on the good news and inclusions this year. It really was a pretty decent list this year for once. I mean they dumped Charlie Sheen and Entourage after all…. Now, I want to hear from you. Who are you most upset wasn’t recognized this year?

RuPaul’s Drag Race finale video “Jealous of My Boogie”

April 28, 2010

Here’s the RuPaul’s Drag Race finale video we’ve all been waiting for… RuPaul’s ” Jealous of My Boogie” featuring appearances by the three finalists Raven, JujuBee and winner Tyra Sanchez. It’s, um, fierce!
