There were actually a few surprises at tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awardsand the biggest one was in the top category of Best Film Ensemble where Argo upset the supposed front-runners Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook. With this win, Argo continues to dominate the awards circuit and I’m declaring it unstoppable to win Best Picture at the Oscars next month… The other surprises came with Downton Abbey’s win in the Drama Ensemble category over Homeland, Bryan Cranston defeating Homeland‘s Damian Lewis, and a shocker win for Tina Fey…. Going back to the film categories Daniel Day-Lewis and Anne Hathaway continued their reign while Jennifer Lawrence beat out her chief rival Jessica Chastain in what continues to be a very tight Best Actress race. The Supporting Actor race also remains very exciting as Tommy Lee Jones won his first big award of the season giving us 3 different winners in this category this season following Philip Seymour Hoffman at the Critics Choice Awards and Christoph Waltz at the Golden Globes. Does this mean we’ll have another new winner at the Oscars? Stay tuned… in the meantime, take a look at all the SAG Award Winners below.

This weekend, awards season keeps trucking along with PGA Awards and the SAG Awards. I, of course, am incredibly excited for the SAG Awards since I actually get to vote for them as a proud member of the Screen Actors Guildfor over 10 years now. It’s always a fun show and one where actors support and applaud one another, and yes, actors love to do that… Anywho, the show airs on Sunday on TBS and could feature some big upsets in the film categories and the TV races are pretty wide open. So, just who do I think will and should win? Take a look at my predictions below. Then, head back here on Sunday night for all the winners from the 2013 SAG Awards. (* And also note four films sent actual dvds to the ENTIRE giant SAG/AFTRA membership guild which certainly improves their chances. Those films were Argo, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook. The latter of those films has been pushing, advertising and knocking the industry over the head like crazy begging for awards too, so it might actually pay off…)

Dominating the SAG Awards with a definitive 3 wins, The Help got some more Oscar juice. The wonderful film took home awards for Best Ensemble, Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) and, in a little bit of an upset, Best Actress (Viola Davis). With her win, Davis is making a serious bid for the Oscar and now has to be considered the front-runner to her dear friend Meryl Streep (who I think should have won, but that’s bygones, because Davis is extraordinary regardless)… The other big surprise was Jean Dujardin taking out George Clooney in the Best Actor race. The Oscars look like they will have some serious battles ahead… Winning Supporting Actor was Christopher Plummer for Beginners... The TV races saw some really boring repeats with Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi and Boardwalk Empire, but at least Jessica Lange was a new winner in the Drama Actress category defeating last year’s victor Juliana Marguiles. For more on the show, head to TNT and check out all the winners below.
(Oh and props to everyone for stepping it up with some great fashion tonight~ much better than the Golden Globes.)

There ya have it, my pics for who I think will win the SAG Awards on Sunday. Do you agree? Do you wish other people were nominated? Let me hear it below.
We all know that it takes a village to make a great movie and luckily, 2012 had its share of wonderfully talented ensembles that made for some fantastic films. So, I decided to compile my own list of what I consider the best ensembles, top to bottom, of films over the last year. As a SAG voter, I will get to choose between the casts of The Artist, Bridesmaids, The Help, Midnight in Paris and The Descendants for Best Ensemble. Interestingly, only 2 of those films make my list… and I wonder if you can guess which ones… With that said, take a look at my choices for the Best Casts of 2012.
First Honorable Mentions…
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: a fierce and ferocious Rooney Mara, a sexy and introspective Daniel Craig, a creepy fantastic Stellan Skarsgaard plus solid support from Robin Wright, Joely Richardson, Christopher Plummer and more
Midnight in Paris: Woody Allen’s best film in years gave us Owen Wilson‘s best performance everywhere plus a luminous Marion Cottilard and a strong group of vets like Kathy Bates, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Adrien Brody, Kurt Fuller, Allison Pill and Corey Stoll
My Week with Marilyn: while Michelle Williams is deservedly gaining the most applause for her brilliant turn as Marilyn Monroe, the rest of the cast was tremendous starting with likely Oscar nominee Kenneth Branaugh and then Eddie Redmayne, Julia Ormond, Emma Watson, Toby Jones, Dominic Purcell and Oscar winner Dame Judi Dench
Now onto the top tier…
Top Ten Film Ensembles of 2012:
10: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: while I didn’t love the film, the cast was pretty flawless. Gary Oldman’s stoic and simmering lead agent anchored a cast of great Brits including Benedict Cumberpatch (my have in the film), Toby Jones (again), Christian McKay, Tom hardy, Cirian Hinds and Oscar winner Colin Firth.
9. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close: with a wonderful central performance from newcomer Thomas Horn and some beautiful work from Oscar winner Sandra Bullock and Oscar nominee Viola Davis, this 9/11 tribute film really socked me in the gut. Plus Max Von Sydow, Jeffrey Wright, John Goodman, Zoe Caldwell and Tom Hanks were great, not to mention a ton of small character actors that gave weight and authenticity to New York City. (This is something the film did great unlike The Descendants which cast non-actors for authenticity reasons in Hawaii and it backfired by taking you out of the scene with their poor performances).
8. 50/50: I sure hope this hilarious and heartbreaking film gets some Oscar traction next month because it deserves it. Joseph Gordon Levitt (a Golden Globe nominee) would make my final five Best Actor contenders for his triumphant performance as a young man fighting cancer. Plus the film gave us Seth Rogan’s best performance ever and great turns by Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Phillip Baker Hall, Matt Frewer and Independent Spirit nominee Anjelica Huston.
7. The Ides of March: this political thriller had so many great elements~ a great script, strong direction and a pitch perfect cast led by Golden Globe nominee Ryan Gosling. Standouts in the supporting cast for me were Phillip Seymour Hoffman and a surprisingly great Evan Rachel Wood. Also delivering nice turns were the always reliable Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright and director/star George Clooney.
6. Rampart: this dark and edgy thriller gave us a no holds barred brilliant turn by Woody Harrelson as a mess of a corrupt cop. But it also gave us a magnificent supporting cast with Brie Larson, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon and an especially dynamic Robin Wright as the women mixed up in his life. Plus there was Ben Foster, Sigourney Weaver, Steve Buscemi, Audra MacDonald, Ned Beatty, and Ice Cube.
5. Crazy Stupid Love: the best romantic comedy of the year was hilarious, original and refreshing and boasted a flawless ensemble of cinema pros like Steve Carrell, Marisa Tomei (again), Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Emma Stone and the sexiest man on film in all of 2012, Ryan Gosling.
4. Margin Call: in this fast paced and fascinating thriller about the financial crisis of the past few years, it was hard to pick just who stood out the most. I’d give Oscar winner Kevin Spacey the slight edge, but hey it also featured Demi Moore’s best work in ages and a wily and wonderfully corrupt Jeremy Irons… not to mention Zachary Quinto showed strong leading man potential, Penn Badgely in his best role to date, and great work from Paul Bettany, Mary McDonnell, Simon Baker and Stanley Tucci.
3. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2: the final chapter in the Harry Potter franchise was by far the best. The film was magnificent on every level and the cast was just perfect. They all rose to the occasion and we will miss them tremendously. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Gint all grew into wonderful actors over the year and I’m sure the great supporting cast of talents like Maggie Smith, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Gambon, Jason Isaacs, Julie Walters and every British luminary around helped inform their performances. But I have to single out Alan Rickman’s Oscar worthy turn as Snape as the film’s highlight. Seriously, nominate him now Academy voters!
2. Bridesmaids: the funniest movie of the year also gave us one of the best female ensembles in ages. Golden Globe nominee Kristin Wiig was a terrific ring leader for this riotous crew including Emmy nominee Rose Byrne, Wendi McLoven-Covey, Maya Rudolph, Ellie Kemper and the standout~ SAG nominee, and soon to be Oscar nominee if you ask me, Melissa McCarthy. There were a few other funny guys in it too I have to recognize~ Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd, and Ben Falcone. Cant wait for a sequel!
1. The Help: I don’t think it’s a surprise that this incredibly talented and transcendent group of women are at the top of the list. (Hey, when was the last time two primarily female ensembles anchored two of the best movies of the year? Fantastic!… and it’s about time…) Led by surefire Oscar nominees Viola Davis (heartbreaking and resplendent), Octavia Spencer (fiery, hilarious and explosive) and Jessica Chastain (who gave a million amazing performances this year), the women in this film left an indelible mark. I mean you could also make a case for nominating Emma Stone (again), Cicely Tyson, Allison Janney, Sissy Spacek and wondrously evil Bryce Dallas Howard. You know which film is getting my vote for the SAG Best Ensemble!
This one is all about the actors… It’s time for my big bold SAG Award Nomination predictions. The nods will be announced tomorrow morning and I expect to hear a lot of names from The Help, The Descendants, Modern Family, Mildred Pierce and Breaking Bad. And just who do I think will take home the most nods for an individual? I’m going with Melissa McCarthy who I say will grab two nods forBridesmaids and one for Mike & Molly. Take a look at my picks below and check back here tomorrow for all the official nominees that are chosen by the actors themselves (including me~ a proud SAG member since 1998).

Last year she stole the show when she won the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year she stole the show again as she won Best Actress in a Comedy Series. All hail Betty White, the hottest 89-year-old around as the SAG Awards honored her for her first individual performance win and she kindly responded with the best and funniest speech of the night~ even fondling her statue. How much do we love Betty!? … Now, the show wasn’t all about Betty, the Screen Actors Guild also honored the movies with all the front-runners taking home awards including Colin Firth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. It seems all but assured that they will likely repeat at the Oscars next month. Things could still change, but they’re all safe bets now. Another good bet is that The King’s Speech will deservedly take home Best Picture as it added the Best Ensemble win to its mantle at tonight’s show…. Other television wins went to the casts of Modern Family and Boardwalk Empire plus Steve Buscemi and Juliana Marugiles in the drama categories and Alec Baldwin grabbed his 5th consecutive win for Comedy Actor. Take a look at the full list of winners below (and no, all of the people I voted for didn’t win… wanna know who I was pulling for? Shoot me an email. Ok, enough with Oscar fever, who’s hungry for some SAG sweets?… yeah, I know that makes no sense, but I love me some alliteration, hehe… Anywho, the SAG Awards are this Sunday on TNT and it’s one of the last few big awards shows before the Oscars, and often, they signal a shift in awards voting (only the Independent Spirits and the BAFTAS are left after this). So, does this mean Annette Bening can stomp Natalie Portman in her toe shoe tracks? And can The King’s Speechsteal the thunder from The Social Network? I say, yes they both can. Sure, I may be going out on a hopeful limb for Bening, but I think the large SAG voting body may not be as partial to the very divisive Black Swan as the critics groups were. So, we’ll see.
The SAG’s also honor the best in television and we could see some of my favorites like Dexter, Glee, Modern Family and Hot in Cleveland (which I’m appearing on February 9th by the way) take home the statue. So, check out my predictions below and watch the show live on Sunday night…. Also, send me a private email if you wanna know just who I voted for!

Susan Sarandon, You Don’t Know Jack
~and here are a few of my thoughts on today’s nods…
The Good:
~Betty White and the Hot in Cleveland nods: vindication for a brilliant comedian, her hilarious cohorts (Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves and Valerie Bertinelli) and the traditional sitcom format.
~Chris Colfer: the breakout Glee star straddles comedy, musical numbers and drama with aplomb and keeps racking up the nods (Emmy, Globe and SAG).
~Glee/Modern Family: the two best comedies on TV led the way and grabbed nods for their individual performers too. Big ups to Ed O’Neil for finally grabbing some notice for once too.
~The women of Temple Grandin: the best TV movie of the year grabbed 3 nods for the wonderful work of Clare Danes (who will win), Julia Ormond and Catherine O’Hara. I’d say they’d all be in the running for the Film honors as well if this had gotten a theatrical release.
~The King’s Speech/The Kids Are Alright/The Fighter/The Social Network: all four films continue to grab much deserved recognition this season.
Big Surprises:
~John Hawkes: the veteran actor finally gets some steam in the supporting race for Winter’s Bone. Could he make it to the Oscar race?
~Hilary Swank: everyone seemed to like her work in Conviction, but this is the first time she’s gotten any awards notice so far.
The Bad:
~ Jeff Bridges: hello, his work in True Grit is just a little more comedic version of his Crazy Heart character from last year. It’s fine, but not award worthy at all!
~Black Swan in ensemble: Yes, Mila and Natalie are fantastic and deserved their nods. However, Barbara Hershey was bad, Vincent Cassel was one-note and Winona Ryder was plain atrocious in the film.
~No Blue Valentine love: two of the absolute BEST acting performances of the year were denied. Poor Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. I’m thinking their film got to the SAG nominated committee too late because there is no other excuse for their omission.
~No Inception in ensemble: the fantastic sci-fi bender featured two Oscar worthy turns in Leonardo DiCaprio and Marion Cottillard’s performances, but the whole cast was incredible (especially standouts Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
~ Mariska Hargitay: I love ya, but enough already with your never-ending SVU nods…
