The Grey surprises at the Box Office

January 30, 2012

In another decent weekend at the box office, two films did better than expected while the Oscar nominations only gave a little boost to the big competitors. However, grosses were up overall versus last year as the new action drama The Grey, starring Liam Neeson, opened with a surprising $ 20 million. It was the first of three new entries in the top ten. Opening in third with $ 11.7 million was Katherine Heigl’s poorly reviewed action comedy One for the Money which many assumed was dead in the water before it even hit theaters. That was more the case for the third opener, the crime thriller Man on a Ledge with Sam Worthington, as it only totaled $8.3 million…. Looking at the films with multiple Oscar noms, The Descendants and The Artist improved the most as they added extra theaters. For more on their grosses and all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here.

My End of Summer Movie Grades

September 2, 2011

Well, summer is on its way out and with it goes a rather lackluster season at the movie turnstiles. Despite big monetary numbers, attendance was down at theatres this summer and several films underperformed (Cars 2, Pirates 4) despite still doing decently. Then there were also gigantic flops that you couldn’t pay me to see (Cowboys & Aliens, The Change Up, Green Lantern). On the other hand there were fabulous films that were both critical and commercial successes (The Help, Harry Potter). With the final weekend upon us dumping two big film turds (Shark Night 3D, Apollo 18), it is interesting to note that one very good movie will end the summer on a positive note, The Debt. This taut thriller spans three decades of spy intrigue as Mossad agents hunt a treacherous Nazi doctor and features fantastic performances from this year’s “It Girl” Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Tree of Life), Martin Csokas (The Bourne Supremacy), Oscar nominee Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom), hottie Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen). I really enjoyed the film (despite Worthington’s terrible accent~ his acting was still good remember!) and gave it an ”A-” grade. It was one of several movies I would recommend from the past few months. With that said, take a look at all the grades for the movies I saw over the summer. Enjoy and let me know your faves.

Today’s Oscar Contender~ “The Whistleblower” is Fascinating, Harrowing and Fantastic

July 27, 2011

Rarely do Oscar worthy films come out in August, but it’s not without precedent. Two years ago, Meryl Streep grabbed her 16th Oscar nomination for Julie & Julia that month and this year several films aim to replicate that success. Out at the end of the month is the thriller The Debt with Oscar winner Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life) and Sam Worthington (Avatar), and August 8th, the highly anticipated film adaptation of the award-winning novel The Help hits theatres. This one stars Oscar winner Sissy Spacek, Oscar nominee Viola Davis, Emmy winner Allison Janney, Chastain (again), Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer and Golden Globe nominee Emma Stone and has awards written all over it… However, there is one small film opening on August 5th that deserves serious Oscar attention, The Whistleblower. This dark, compelling, and exceptionally done political thriller details the true story of Kathryn Bolkovac (played by Oscar winner Rachel Weisz) who served as a peacekeeper in post war Bosnia in the 90′s and worked to uncover a massive sex trafficking scandal. She fought different law enforcement officials from multiple countries, U.N. dignitaries, political policies and corrupt people of all stripes to bring these horrible crimes to light, and the film captures her struggle with unflinching integrity and honesty. It’s a disturbing picture to watch at times, but an important one that is wonderfully realized by first time writer/director Larysa Kondracki. It features an Award-worthy performance by Weisz who is given ample exemplary support by Moncia Belluci, Oscar nominee David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck), Oscar winner Vanessa Redgrave (Julia) and a brilliant international cast. I highly recommend the film which I saw earlier this week. Check it out next week in Los Angeles and New York with other cities opening throughout the month, and hopefully Academy members will remember the film at the end of the year especially for Picture, Screenplay and Actress (Weisz). For more on the film (which I give an “A” grade to), head here and watch the trailer below.

Hollywood’s Hot Aussie Invasion

April 29, 2010

G’day Mate. “Throw Another Shrimp on the Barbi.” Koala Bears, Crocodile Dundee and Olivia Newton-John. What do all these things have in common? Why, they’re all synonymous with Australia. Now, Hollywood has always been interested in the lovely land down under in films like The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Dessert, Australia and Crocodile Dundee and its actors (Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman) and musicians (Kylie Minogue, Midnight Oil, Men At Work,The Veronicas), and now a new wave of hot Australians are about to take over our shores. Seriously, you can’t really watch TV or go to the movies without happening upon a hot and talented Aussie on display. So, I’ve compiled a little guide of some of the hottest new and buzzed about Aussie actors storming the entertainment world. Which one do you wanna do a walkabout with? Let me know below.

Alex O’Laughlin: this hunky stud has been searching for a hit TV series for the last few years. Unfortunately, both Moonlight and Three Rivers tanked. However, he’s back at it with CBS’s reinvention of Hawaii Five-O next fall and he’s currently on the big screen with J Lo in The Back Up Plan.

Abbie Cornish: after receiving a lot of critical plaudits and some Oscar buzz for last year’s Bright Star, it looks like Abbie will be hitting the big time with several features on tap like Sucker Punch and The Dark Fields co-starring Bradley Cooper and Robert DeNiro. She might also look familiar because she’s the one Ryan Phillipe left Reese Witherspoon for… Alas, that’s over now too.

Chris Hemsworth: We first noticed the ridiculously attractive Chris Hemsworth playing Capt. Kirk’s dad in last year’s reboot of Star Trek. Well, he’s poised to eclipse the star of that pic, Chris Pine, as he steps into leading roles in the Red Dawn remake and as the norse legend Thor.

Liam Hemsworth: Chris’s little brother is currently sharing the screen with his real life girlfriend Miley Cyrus in the romance The Last Song. Up next, he shoots the big budget action adventure and potential franchise Arabian Nights.

Anna Torv: Playing straight-laced detective Olivia Dunham on Fox’s Fringe, Torv has to deal with parallel universes, modern-day occult and Joshua Jackson, and she does it beautifully. You can also catch this blonde bombshell in HBO’s latest miniseries The Pacific.

Ryan Kwanten: as the sexy dimbulb Jason Stackhouse on HBO’s guilty pleasure True Blood, Kwanten spends as much time fighting off vampires and beasts as he does naked wooing the ladies. He was also half-naked during his run on Summerland as a surfer. Kwanten has season 3 of Blood on tap along with a couple of indie films Red Hill and Griff the Invisible. And for more hot pics like the one below, click here.

Mia Wasikowska: as the titular character in this spring’s smash hit Alice in Wonderland, Wasikowska tangle with rabbits, cats, scary monsters and Johnny Depp. Up next she tangles with Julianne Moore and Annette Bening in the Oscar worthy comedy-drama The Kids are Alright followed by the iconic role as Jane Eyre. You might also recognize her from her performance on the acclaimed series In Treatment.

Sam Worthington: Ok, fine, he was born in England, but so was Olivia Newton-John. The point is they grew up in Australia and they’re Aussies through and through. You all know him best from Avatar, but he also headlined the recent hot mess Clash of the Titans and last year’s Terminator Salvation. Currently Hollywood’s go to action guy, Sam will be changing gears with the upcoming dramas The Debt with Helen Mirren and Last Night with Keira Knightly.

Teresa Palmer: Teresa first claim to fame in the U.S. were the films The Grudge 2 and Bedtime Stories. Now, she’s poised to hit it big with this summer’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and the upcoming Mad Max re-invention Fury Road.

So, which Aussie is gettin you hot down under? Oh, yeah, I had to go there… And if they don’t do it for you, here are a few more of our fave Aussies~ Emilie DeRavin, Simon Baker, Portia DiRossi, Guy Pearce, Jacinda Barrett, Toni Collette, Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Naomi Watts, Eric Bana, Heath Ledger, Rachel Griffiths.

Crap of the “Titans”

April 26, 2010

I guess I got what I deserved… You see, I had a little free time and wanted to catch a movie with my friend Tony this weekend. We decided upon Clash of the Titans because it fit our schedule the best, and, well, the original was camptastic fun back in the day. Unfortunately this one was just crap. At least we didn’t waste our money on 3D.

This updated Clash follows the same storyline as the original with “demigod” Perseus battling the forces of Hades and the Underworld with a few soldier friends while the gods on Mt. Olympus babble incessantly while bathed in RuPaul meets Barbara Walters lighting. We also get incredibly bad and cheap special effects, giggle inducing monsters, horrible costumes that would embarrass even Chris March from Project Runway, and terrible acting. Sam Worthington from Avatar may be nice to look at but he couldn’t pick an accent or a motivation to save his life and Ralph Fiennes does a tired and pathetic version of his Voldemort from the Harry Potter films. To top it off, there is more eyeliner on display than Adam Lambert could try to rock in his entire life. It all adds up to one giant mess, albeit it was a somewhat fun mess. Grade: D

Here’s the trailer to the Crud of the Titans below:

Oscars: the Good, the Bad and the Huh?

March 8, 2010

Here’s my quick take on last night’s 82nd Annual Academy Awards… I’m gonna break it down into 3 categories for ya: the Good, the Bad and the Huh… here we go…

The GOOD:

“The Hurt Locker” wins:  the actual Best Picture wins!!! And a huge contrats to Kathryn Bigelow as the first female Best Director winner who deserved to win regardless of her gender by the way.

The “Precious” wins: of course Mo’Nique won, but hello, the shocker of the night was the adapted screenplay for “Precious”. Well done!

Sandra Bullock’s speech: what a gracious, hilarious, wonderful and classy lady! No wonder everyone loves her in Hollywood.

Neil Patrick Harris’s opening number: this man can do it all. Hell, he coulda just stayed and been the host as he proved so winningly at the Emmys and the Tonys last year. He was Legen… wait for it… dary!

Alec and Steve: what a great and hilarious hosting team. Loved their opening, the introductions of each other, the “Paranormal Activity” spoof, etc. Two host work best when they respect each other and play off each other so well.

The “Up” and Christoph Waltz wins!

The John Hughes Tribute!

The Dance/original score section: I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I loved it. It might’ve been a tad too long, but I loved seein’ my So You Think You Can Dance stars up on the Oscar stage.

Demi Moore: Um, damn she looked hot! And was totally best dressed too!

The BAD:

Sandra Bullock’s win: as much as I love her and she was very good in “The Blindside”, she didnt deserve to win. I’d actually rank her last in that category, and hello, Meryl Streep was ROBBED!

The Horror tribute: Talk about a waste of time and what’s up with the inclusion of non-horror movies like “Beetlejuice” and the incredibly lame “Twilight”?

The fashion: if it wasn’t one disappointing dress after another, it was just a plain disaster. Witness~ Miley Cyrus, Zoe Saldana, Vera Farmiga, Suzy Amis (ie: Skelator), Carrie Mulligan)

“Avatar”‘s win for cinematography: Um, I usually think camerawork that films actually people and places is a little more award-worthy… and for further proof, look at the work of the other noms “The Hurt Locker”, “Inglorious Basterds” and “The White Ribbon” which all should’ve beaten it.

Kathy Ireland on the pre show: um, WHAT WAS THAT? Why was she there? Why was she standing like that? What was up with her hair? … nice triceps though.

Clooney’s hair: sorry but he was not lookin’ fine last night… has to be for a role, right?

Macauley Culkin’s hair, Anthony Michael Hall’s face and Judd Nelson’s everything: while it was nice to see them in the tribute, they were lookin’ rough!

The directing and editing of the show: can you say messy!

The abrupt best pic award: yes, the show was long, but one last reminder of the nominees would’ve been nice Tom!

The HUH:

Jeff Bridges mumbling, rambling, lip smackin’ speech… it’s kinda yucky when he talks…

That Kanye West moment: what was up with that producer stealing the spotlight from the director of the Best Doc Short subject winner… weird. It felt like Joy Behar and Tyler Perry were doing a sketch!

Sam Worthington’s attitude: um, do really hot Austrailians not have a funny bone? Lighten up Sam. You’re the biggest new star in Hollywood. Hello, Jackman and Kidman do funny…

And there ya have it. Overall it was a pretty good show. I’m pleased by and large. What about you? Lemme know below.
