Moviegoers Hear the Call but Ignore the Magic

March 18, 2013

imagesIn another lackluster weekend at the box office, moviegoers said a big no thank you to a couple of comic superstars as the Steve Carrell/Jim Carrey comedy The Incredible Burt Wonderstone became the latest big bomb of 2013 debuting with only $10 million. That put the film in third place behind a decent hold for Oz the Great and Powerful with another $42 million (one of the few bright spots at the box office this year) and the new Halle Berry thriller The Call which netted $17 million. Berry’s film did much better than anticipated and with a low production budget could turn a nice little profit…. However as a whole, not much is exciting moviegoers this year, and as for me, the summer movies can’t get here fast enough…. For more on this week’s numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

An Underperforming “Cowboys” eecks out a win over “The Smurfs”

August 1, 2011

So, I head out-of-town for a few days, and when I return, Hollywood has gone a little crazy. How else to explain The Smurfs almost overtaking the highly touted Cowboys & Aliens at the box office this weekend. Well, for one, audiences loved the Smurfs which surprisingly overperformed opening to $35.6 million.  And secondly, Cowboys couldn’t match expectations, got bad reviews and poor audience scores and just narrowly won the weekend with $36.4 million. (That was a full $10 million under most already low-balled projections). The road ahead for Cowboys looks very rough considering its ginormous price tag and will likely give Universal two stinkers in a row after Larry Crowne. At least they had the massive success of Bridesmaids and Fast Five earlier this summer. As for The Smurfs, watch for this family friendly film to hold up well in the weeks ahead. The same could be said for the other opening film this weekend, the lovely romantic comedy Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone that opened to a good $19.1 million…. Elsewhere at the box office, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 officially became the highest grossing film in the series this weekend both domestically and internationally. Holy Harry! … For more numbers and info, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

First Look~ Crazy Stupid Love!

April 11, 2011

Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner Steve Carrell is about to finish his run on NBC’s The Office on April 28th with a super sized episode that will tell us what happens to the one and only Michael Scott… However, you won’t have to wait long to see Carrell again as he’ll be appearing in one of the most anticipated comedies of the summer Crazy Stupid Love. This romantic comedy features Carrell dealing with a broken marriage to Oscar nominee Julianne Moore and learning how to date again with lessons from a young playboy in the form of Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling. Other big names in the cast include Golden Globe nominee Emma Stone, Golden Globe winner Kevin Bacon and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei. The film which opens July 29th looks like it could be a breakout hit among a sizable audience and actually a good movie to boot… Besides that, there’s Gosling’s abs… which are pretty much ridiculous…. Check out the trailer below for proof.

Box Office Breakdown~ People like “Schmucks” but still love “Inception”

August 2, 2010

Looks like Steve Carrell may have his third big hit film of the year with Dinner For Schmucks opening to a good if not great $23 million. That follows the big grosses for his spring hit Date Night which totalled $95 million and Despicable Me which is currently at $190 million. We’ll see if Schmucks holds up next week though as another big-ticket comedy, The Other Guys featuring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, hits theatres. Despite a decent opening for the comedy, it still couldn’t hit the top spot as the brilliant smash Inception took in another $27.5 million for three weeks on top and $193 million total. Also opening to slightly disappointing results were Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore with $12.5 mill and Zac Efron’s drama Charlie St. Cloud with $12.1. Check BoxOfficeMojo for all your box office needs and see this weekend’s top 10 below.

This “Date” will make your Night!

April 12, 2010

In the hysterical new film, Date Night, Steve Carrell and Tina Fey play a suburban couple looking to spice up their marriage out for a night of fun in the big city that turns into a hilarious comedy of errors. Despite a juvenile and conventional script, Fey & Carrell are comic gold who lift the material with their incredible talent. It’s the first adult comedy in ages that makes you feel young again and is just a raucous good time. With a barrage of stars lending support including Ray Liotta, Taraji P. Henson, Common, Kristen Wiig, Mark Ruffalo, and a surprisingly daft and super buff Mark Wahlberg, the film rolls along at a brisk pace with laugh out loud jokes throughout. Mila Kunis and James Franco also show up as another bickering couple in a scene that just kills. But the standout scene involves a taxi and JB Smoove and that’s all I’m gonna say~ you have to see it for yourself. If you’re looking for a great time at the movies with some hilarious one liners (“work that pole like a Russian immigrant”), Date Night will make it a perfect night. Grade: A-

Who’s a Funny Guy? … More Emmy Contenders

March 25, 2010

This is the second in a series of posts I will be doing on this year’s Emmy Award nominations. As most of you know, I’m a huge Awards show obsessive and I love to handicap each of the contenders. The column will focus on the funny men vying to grab that golden girl, the Emmy Award as Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. I’ll break  their chances down by category, then list my favorites and my predictions. Take a look and let me know your thoughts and predictions in the comments below.

The locks for a nomination:

Alec Baldwin (30 Rock): he’s won the last two years plus has several Golden Globes and SAG awards for his hilarious turn as Jack Donaghy. He is the clear front-runner.

Steve Carrell (The Office): poor Carrell seems to always get nominated and never win. He’s been nominated four times and never grabbed the Emmy. That’s likely to continue this year. But hey at least he has those SAG “Office” ensemble wins and a Golden Globe for his troubles…

The likely contenders:

Ed O’Neil (Modern Family):  After a lengthy career, he is finally gaining some critical recognition for his work and  is one of many members of the Modern Family cast that should land nods. As the curmudgeonly patriarch with a heart of gold, O’Neil has obliterated all memories of Al Bundy as well.

Matthew Morrison (Glee): He sings, he dances, he acts, he scores! The former Tony and Golden Globe nominee should be one of several Glee stars to grab a nod on nomination morning. In fact I’m expecting my favorite show to lead all comedies in nominations this year.

Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory): He grabbed his first nomination last year and should follow suit again this year as the funniest geek on tv.

Tony Shaloub (Monk):  the most nomm’d and awarded of this year’s contenders, Shaloub has to be considered a threat for a nom and a win, especially considering it was the final year for his long running hit Monk.

Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm): while I don’t get the appeal for David or his show, Emmy voters do. He’s been nomm’d a bundle of times and I doubt he’ll be left out this year.

In the Running:

Charlie Sheen (Two and a Half Men): despite his personal problems Sheen continues to show up on the nominations lists for SAG, Globes and Emmy awards every now and again. The longevity of his sitcom’s success can only add to his chances of grabbing another nom this year.

David Duchovny (Californication): giving bad guys with sex addictions a good name, Duchovny has previously nabbed Golden Globe and SAG noms for this role (and Emmy nods for his earlier work on The X Files). He could land in the comedy race for the first time this year.

Thomas Jane (Hung): playing the teacher with a little something “extra”, Jane nabbed a Golden Globe nom last year and could see the awards streak continue for his subtle work on the latest HBO comedy hit.

Outside Shot:

Zacahry Levi (Chuck): As the nerd spy who could, Levi straddles action and comedy with ease and he tends to get the hot babes too. Those older male Emmy lovers could certainly respond to that wish-fulfillment.

James Roday (Psych): another USA staple, Psych is consistently entertaining mainly due to Roday’s plucky energy and interplay with Dule Hill.

Deserving Longshot:

Jay Harrington (Better Off Ted) : As the leader of the quirkiest and most criminally ignored ensemble on television, Harrington’s deft work on the little seen Better Off Ted was outstanding. Why oh why didn’t you watch this show America?

On the ballot, but it’s not gonna happen:

Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Joel McHale (Community), Adrien Grenier (Entourage), Kevin Connelly (Entourage), Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory)

So, how would I rank them? Here goes…

1. Alec Baldwin

2. Matthew Morrison

3. Ed O’Neil

4. Jim Parsons

5. Ste ve Carrell

6. Jay Harrington

7. Zachary Levi

8. Thomas Jane

9. James Roday

10. Tony Shaloub

And My Predictions for the actual nominees for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series are:

Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Steve Carrell (The Office), Matthew Morrison (Glee), Ed O’Neil (Modern Family), Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory), Tony Shaloub (Monk)
