American Idol Recap 5/24/11~ Let’s Hear it for Lauren!

May 25, 2011

Well, it took all season, but when she needed it most, Lauren Alaina finally went for broke. In tonight’s American Idol season 10 final competition show, the country cutie took on the other country cutie, Scotty McCreery, in an easy and decisive victory. She hit all the right notes in song selection, performance, vocals and personality and she did it all with laryngitis. (By the way, did you hear the crazy TMZ rumor that Haley was gonna replace Lauren if she couldn’t sing?… Now that would’ve been a cool show, but I’m thrilled Lauren put the rumor to rest). It was such a clear-cut win for Lauren, most notably in her final triumphant song, that it seems obvious she will win…. However, I think any Idol watcher knows that would be a seriously naive thing to say. Because despite Lauren’s dominance, one should never underestimate the power of a Scotty McCreery fan. In fact, his biggest fans~ tween and teen girls, country fans, and the folks from the Red states~ are notorious for making their voices heard loud and clear on Idol. (And don’t forget previous winners David Cook, Kris Allen and Lee Dewyze were all outsung  and out performed on their final competition nights and still won). So, we have a serious battle. And remember, Scotty did fine too. So it’s gonna be close. I just hope people realize who should win the show (ahem Lauren) and take a look at my rankings for tonight’s show for all the proof you need.

American Idol Top 2 Performance Rankings 5/24/11
1. Lauren- “Like My Mother Does”: on the song that will become her first official single, Lauren finally had the moment we’ve been waiting for all season. She gave us an incredibly emotional performance with beautiful flawless vocals that were authentic and totally moving. Yes, I had some tears in my eyes. (Oh, did I mention I was at the live show too?!!! And she was even better in person than when I watched the telecast back again at home)… The song was a perfect fit and seems destined to be a hit in the vein of her Idol Carrie Underwood’s song “Mama’s Song” It was so good, that the thunderous standing ovation seemed to go on and on. It was truly a palpable moment at the NoPia, ahem Nokia theatre, easily the most momentous of the night.
2. Lauren- “Maybe it was Memphis”: performing Pam Tillis’s 90′s smash country hit, Lauren found another perfect fit for her smooth tone and yearning vocals. Clearly, Ms. Underwood knew what she was doing picking this song. It was another home run for Lauren as she easily ran away with both the second and third rounds tonight.
3. Lauren- “Flat on the Floor”: with her first choice tonight, the encore of “Flat”, Lauren took a slimmer victory over peer. Nonetheless, she displayed a fire and commitment that had been missing a few weeks back and she had fun, working the stage like a pro with no hint of her damaged vocal chords. Clearly, she was in it to win it tonight. (hehe, I just echoed Randy Jackson’s incessant yammerings. Drink two!)
4. Scotty- “Gone”: on his best performance tonight, the encore of Montgomery Gentry’s hit, Scotty almost beat Lauren. He wowed the crowd and made the girls scream, and it was his best vocal of the night. However, it just wasn’t enough to stop little Lauren.
5. Scotty- “I Love You This Big”: singing his first single, Scotty sounded good on this ballad that felt like a retro 90′s country hit. Sure, he hit his notes and had a great deal of conviction, but the song still felt a bit cheesy. And Scotty also seemed to be straining a bit when watching it back on TV. This one was definitely better live. However, I’m not sure it’s the song country radio programmers were hoping for…
6. Scotty- “Check Yes or No”: Scotty’s idol George Strait chose his own song for the teen titan and it worked well for him. It would probably sound nice on the radio driving through a cornfield… But watching Scotty cop to all his vocal affectations and crazy facial contortions and the song lost its appeal. And why exactly was he playing the guitar if he was actually only strumming one out of every ten notes? I’m just saying… Don’t get me wrong though, it wasn’t bad. It was just pedestrian and a bit boring. Those are two things Scotty has been throughout the season despite good vocals and a winning personality. We’ll see if that finally catches up to him.

So, there you have it. The score board says it all. Lauren: 3, Scotty: 0… The golden girl got her groove back in this country Idol contest, but will one big win be enough to take the title? I’m not sure… I do know she’s got my vote and I’m thinking Hayley fans turned to her as well. Plus, she really has so much potential and it’s about time Idol had another female winner… And yes, they’ll both be successful, but Lauren has crossover potential while Scotty will remain squarely in the country lane. So, I’m thinking her fan base may be wider and is still growing. With that in mind, I have to make a crazy prediction… Despite all odds, my better intentions and conventional logic, I’m going to predict Lauren wins over the frontrunner in an incredibly tight contest! … Yeah, I may be throwing my money away, but I’m a betting man and I say “Let’s hear it for Lauren”. I mean Steven Tyler declared her the winner and we all know he’s not crazy… Oh, wait, he sorta is… Ack, can I get my money back? … Well, it’s too late. I’ve laid my bet on our Georgia girl. How about you? … Let me hear your thoughts and place your bets below… Oh and let me know if you gave a rat’s patootie about that random Coke contest song by Taio Cruz… And if you enjoyed the return of season 7 winner Cook on his performance of the awesome goodbye song “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”~ even if it was pre-taped… And check back here tomorrow night for my final Idol wrap up of the season….

And one more time, let’s hear it for Lauren!

Your Billboard Awards Wrap Up

May 23, 2011

Last night, ABC aired the resurrected Billboard Music Awards honoring the best in sales and airplay in the recording industry over the past year. However, they couldn’t resurrect this dull and unnecessary awards show (and that’s coming from someone who loves awards shows!). They might as well have called it the BillBORED awards as the performers were less than exemplary and some were even tragic. (Oh dear Britney!) Plus, all the winners were pretty obvious to anyone who follows the record charts, not to mention they seemed rather dated considering Billboard does a year-end chart and special issue at the end of the calendar year. It just felt like a network attempting to make money and get some ratings by airing yet another show. Unfortunately, it failed on all accounts. The writing was terrible, the skits were boring and poor Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Community) was not funny despite a galiant effort. With that said, take a look at the list of winners below and my grades for the performances. And head to Billboard here for more on the show and the winners.

2011 Billboard Music Award Winners:
Top Album Artist: Taylor Swift

Top New Artist: Justin Bieber

Country Song of the Year: Lady Antebellum, “Need You Now”

Millenium Award: Beyoncé

Top Duo/Group: Black Eyed Peas

Radio Artist of the Year: Rihanna

Hot 100 Song of the Year: Taio Cruz’s “Break Your Heart”

Digital Artist of the Year: Justin Bieber

Country Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift

Top Touring Artist: U2

Fan Favorite: Justin Bieber

Female Artist of the Year: Rihanna

Icon Award: Neil Diamond

And now let’s Grade the Performances~

Rihanna & Britney Spears- “S&M”- hello, that was awkward lazy and lascivious. At least Rihanna sang live, but this was a huge letdown and when Britney lulled her way onto the stage to lip synch like a mess, the song completely collapsed. Grade: D+

Black Eyed Peas- “Just Can’t Get Enough/I Gotta Feeling“: channelling Tron and boring me to tears, the Peas did their thing but it seemed to lack the fun and energy of other perfs. It doesn’t help that “Just Cant” is a terrible song. And I love how Fergie just picks any ole key for each verse… Grade: C-

Keith Urban- “Without You”: strong vocals, good musicianship, solid performance. Grade: B

Pitbull, NeYo & Nayer- “Give You Everything”: entertaining perf of the current top ten smash. Pitbull class’d it up and NeYo did his best Michael Jackson and they used Vegas dancing girls! Grade: B

Beyonce- “(Girls) Run the World”- Beyonce is a consummate performer and she did her best, but relied too heavily on video graphics that didn’t translate from stage to screen… Grades~ Beyonce: B+, Her Speech: A, The Song: F

Cee Lo Green- “Crazy/Bright Lights Bigger City/Forget You”: easily the best performance of the night. Cee Lo’s vocals were great. His enthusiasm was infectious and that awesome piano defied gravity. Grade: A-

Lady Antebellum- “Just A Kiss”: with lovely vocals, Lance Bass and Carnie Wilson, ahem, the kids of Lady Antebellum I mean, delivered a fine if nondescript version of their current hit. It was nice, that’s all. Grade: B

Taio Cruz- “Dynamite/Break Your Heart”: showing Usher how he should be singing, Brit singer Cruz showcased his smash hits from last year with a good if not great performance. And he needed to pull his pants up! Grade: B

OneRepublic- “Good Life”: wow, Ryan Tedder needs to stick to writing and producing cuz he sings live like Taylor Swift. And by that I mean~ AWFUL. He was screechy, pitchy, flat and all over the place…. at least it was a good song. Grade: C-

Far East Movement w/Snoop Dogg & Ryan Tedder- “Like a G6/Rocketeer”: these rappers were ok, but upstaged by the Dogg and Tedder was terrible again. Grade: C

Mary J. Blige & Lil Wayne- “Someone to Love“: Blige was giving you ’94 with the bangs and one piece suit tonight as she growled through her latest single. Her vocals were decent and Lil Wayne was ok, but by the end of the night, I remembered her pony tail and bangs more than the song. Grade: C+

Ke$ha- “Blow”: powering through her admittedly catchy current hit, Ke$ha gave arguably her best live tv performance to date and she was singing LIVE too. I was sorta impressed. She still has a way to go, but at least she’s on the right track. Grade: B

Nicki Minaj- “Super Bass”: um, what the heck was that? I clearly do not understand Nicki and I didn’t like the song, but I like her. Grade: C+

Britney Spears/Nicki Minaj “Til the World Ends“: a lazy disastrous mess and Britney should be ashamed. She wasn’t even trying with her atrocious lip synching and indifferent attitude. Just appallingly bad. Grade: F

Neil Diamond- Medley: well, it was fun and I’m sure the middle-aged Republicans really dug it. I do have to say he can still entertain a crowd, so good for you Mr. Diamond. But watching at home left a bit to be desired. Grade: B

And here’s the one really memorable perf from last night~ Cee Lo…

It’s here~ the New Single from NKOTBSB!

April 5, 2011

Wonder twin powers unite, or in this case~ boy band powers unite! Form of a pop super group: NKOTBSB! … That’s what we get today as the first single from the newly united pop groups New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys hits airwaves and iTunes. The song entitled “Don’t Turn Out the Lights” is a fun pop dance ditty right along the lines of Taio Cruz’s # 1 from last year “Break Your Heart”. It features solos from your faves like Joey and Jordan (NKOTB) and Bryan and Nick (BSB) and should satisfy both groups hungry fans. It also marks the first joint music we will be hearing from them as they embark on a big summer tour in a few months. All signs point to a hit song and a hit tour. 2010 Music~ The Year of the Collaboration

December 21, 2010

It you turn on the radio these days, you can’t go a minute without hearing two big artists team up on new song. It seems to be the easiest and best way to get a hit these days. Witness the biggest hits of 2010 and you’ll see collaborations all over the place (Eminem/Rihanna, Jay Z/Alicia Keyes, Beyonce/Lady Gaga) and luckily, most of them, produce some fantastic music. So, here’s my take on the 15 best music collaborations of 2010. Take note that French DJ David Guetta is all over this chart and big new stars B.o.B. and  Bruno Mars makes two appearances as well.

Top 15 Collaborations of 2010:

15. “Billionaire”- Travis McCoy w/Bruno Mars (this top 5 hit was covered on Glee and introduced us to Mars who would later conquer the pop charts with his own hits including the # 1 “Just the Way You Are”)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aRor905cCw

14. “Club Can’t Handle Me”- Flo Rida w/David Guetta (this undeniable dance hit was featured in Step Up 3D and is the first of three Guetta songs on the list)

13. “Gettin’ Over You”- David Guetta & Chris Willis w/Fergie & LMFAO (here’s Guetta again this time with frequent collaborator Willis and Fergie who he worked with on the Black Eye Peas’ The E.N.D. album)

12. “Let it Be”- Jennifer Hudson w/The Roots (one of two songs from the Hope for Haiti telethon, Hudson brought a gorgeous gospel and R&N vibe to this Beatles’ classic)

11. “I Like It”- Enrique Iglesias & Pitbull (Iglesias nabbed his first top ten hit in 8 years with this simple but undeniable dance/pop hit)

10. “Nothin’ on You”- B.o.B. w/Bruno Mars (here’s Mars second song and B.o.B’s first of two entries on the list. It’s a massive smash and a Grammy nominee for Record of the Year to boot!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PTDv_szmL0

9. “Hallelujah”- Justin Timberlake & Matt Morris (on this haunting track from the Hope for Haiti telethon, Timberlake and buddy Morris beautifully tackle Leonard Cohen’s iconic track)

8. “Break Your Heart”- Taio Cruz w/Ludacris (for his first single, Cruz enlisted rapper Ludacris and subsequently, “Heart” became a # 1 hit)

7. “Empire State of Mind”- Jay Z & Alicia Keyes (this song was arguably 2009′s best collaboration and continued to make impressions all year-long)

6. “Commander”- Kelly Rowland w/David Guetta (this is Guetta’s third appearance on the list on the best dance track of 2010 and it’s also a worldwide smash)

5. “Airplanes”- B.o.B. w/Hayley Williams (B.o.B got a little help from Paramore’s Hayley Williams for this megahit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kn6-c223DUU

4. “Don’t You Wanna Stay”- Jason Aldean & Kelly Clarkson (this gorgeous ballad is only just starting to fly up the charts and could top this list next year. Aldean wisely asked Clarkson to duet with him to an amazing result and a brilliant vocal from Clarkson)

3. “Love the Way You Lie”- Eminem w/Rihanna (this multiple Grammy nominated # 1 hit was inescapable this summer and fall and is the front-runner to win in several categories at the upcoming ceremony)

2. “California Gurls”- Katy Perry w/Snoop Dogg (here’s another Grammy nominated # 1 smash which was also the song of the summer and cemented Perry as a giant pop star)

1. “Telephone”- Lady Gaga & Beyonce (What happens when you get two of the biggest ladies in the biz together? “Telephone” happens, that’s what. It was a giant hit. It’s a Grammy nominee and have you seen that video? It’s all just too delicious to deny.)

Kylie Minogue tops my Late Summer Songs Playlist!

August 20, 2010

So, here in LA, it finally feels like summer with some seriously hot temperatures after a very mild June and July. And in honor of this renewed summer sun, I’ve got another playlist of the songs I’m loving right now. Like my previous list, Kylie Minogue, Robyn, Katy Perry and The Scissor Sisters appear again. But really, they’re latest releases are so good, how could they not show up? So, take a look, download them on iTunes and enjoy the weekend!

Jason’s Late Summer Songs Playlist…

12. Kelly Rolwand “Rose Colored Glasses” (The second release from her upcoming album is more pop influenced than her last dance smash “Commander”, but just as good. And this time there’s a message!)

11. Flo Rida & David Guetta “Club Can’t Handle Me” (This club jammer from Step Up 3 may be generic, but it simply won’t be denied)

10. Mika vs. RedOne “Kick Ass” (Ok, so, this song came out in the spring along with the film it’s from, Kick Ass. However with the film just hitting dvd, it’s time to enjoy it yet again!)

9 Taio Cruz “Dynamite” (Proving he’s not a one hit wonder, Cruz comes back with another delectable dance ditty like his first # 1 “Break Your Heart)”

8. “Crossfire” -Brandon Flowers (The Killers frontman’s first solo single is simply awesome and has a killer video with Charlize Theron to boot!)

7. “Something ‘Bout Love”- David Archuleta (Go ahead, giggle all you want, but I love Archie’s new single from his upcoming sophomore album. It’s some sugary good pop ear candy)

6. Robyn “Hang With Me” (Why oh why isn’t this Swedish sensation a huge star? Every one of her songs is brilliant including her latest bid for a stateside hit)

5. Scissor Sisters “Any Which Way” (The second single from the group’s NightWork album is a downright dirty disco dancin’ electro glam good time!)

4. Christina Aguilera “You Lost Me” ~Hex Hector & Max Quayle Remix (This ballad has been given new life in this amazing remix that has returned Xtina to the top of the dance charts)

3. Erika Jayne “Pretty Mess” (This club diva is everything Ke$ha wishes should could be and this song is better than all of that trashy messes hits)

2. Katy Perry “Teenage Dream” (This is the summer of Perry and we are just along for the ride. Mega-smash # 2 from her second album could become as big as the first “California Gurls”)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98WtmW-lfeE

1. Kylie Minogue “Get Outta My Way” (All hail Kylie! Her new album, Aphrodite, is chock full of hits like “All the Lovers” and now her latest bid for world domination)
