“The Avengers” Lords Over the MTV Movie Awards

April 17, 2013

imagesSunday night was all about some super heroes and a super silly lady as The Avengers took home 3 awards including Movie of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards while host Rebel Wilson won two statues. Wilson and her Pitch Perfect cohorts not only performed on the show but they won Musical Moment over Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Wilson took home the Breakthrough Award. The other big winner of the night was Silver Linings Playbook which landed three awards including Actor and Actress for Bradley Cooper and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence… I have to say I was a bit dismayed that the brilliant films Les Miserables, Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Dark Knight Rises all went home empty-handed, but hey, I’ll admit I’m a bit older than the MTV voting demographic unfortunately, lol … For more on the show and the awards, head to the MTV site here and take a look at all the winners below.

It’s All about Django, Jennifer and Ted at the MTV Movie Award Nominations

March 6, 2013

Django-Unchained-wallpapers-1920x1200-4This year, it looks like the MTV Movie Awards are looking to class up the joint a bit as they nominated several Oscar winners and nominees among their top choices for this year’s ceremony. Django Unchained, which won two Oscars, grabbed 7 nominations including Best Movie where it goes up against Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook plus The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Ted. The later film, a some-what lowbrow stoner comedy, is also up for 7 awards right in line with MTV’s usual choices… The other big contender is Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence who is up for 5, yes 5, awards including Best Female Performance against fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway. Take a look at all the nominees below which also feature some of my favorite films (Perks of Being a Wallflower, Les Mis, Skyfall) and performers (Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Emma Watson, Rebel Wilson, Jessica Chastain and Marion Cotillard to name a few). Voting is open now, and watch for the MTV Movie Awards airing in April on MTV.

My Take on the Best of the Movies in 2012 and my Top 30 Films!

December 22, 2012

les-mis-poster-2442012 was a pretty good year for films. Despite a wonky start with dreadful fare like The Grey and what seemed like 400 Channing Tatum movies, we got a bunch of box office hits that were actually good movies too like The Hunger Games, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers. My Still Ridiculously Early November 2012 Oscar Nomination Predictions

November 1, 2012

It’s November and the Awards season is in full swing. I have a seen a bunch of the big contenders this year and many of them are living up to their promise (Argo, Lincoln). However, some are on shaky ground (can we talk about the atrocious mess that is The Master? It’s a very divisive film, but I think it’s in big trouble. At least the performances are still good bets for nods.) So, just how does this shake up my take on who will and won’t get nominated this year? Take a look at my new list below and compare it to my October predix here…. And tune in next month for another updated list.

There’s no “Rush” to see the Newcomers at the Box Office

August 27, 2012

This weekend proved a really sad one for Hollywood as all three new releases tanked and The Expendables 2 easily won a second week on top despite a 52% drop. The action film took in $13.5 million and now has a total of $52 million. This week’s newcomers included the bike messenger thriller Premium Rush starring the awesome Joseph Gordon-Levitt (who was brilliant in last year’s 50/50 and this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises) which fared the best of the worst with only $6.3 million while the new Dax Shepard/Kristen Bell comedy Hit and Run stumbled in tenth place with just $4.6 million. Luckily the latter film had a low production budget and should break even. The same can’t be said for the final new entry, the horror film The Apparition, which didn’t even make the top ten pulling in a sad $2.9 million… For more on these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

Bourne is Reborn at the Box Office

August 12, 2012

Many considered it a huge gamble to try to continue the Bourne movie franchise without star Matt Damon. However, Universal has done pretty well with the opening of its rebooted franchise, The Bourne Legacy, starring Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz. The slick action thriller (which I totally enjoyed and give an “A-” grade to by the way) took in a good $40.2 million over the weekend. It led three new releases including the Will Ferrell/Zach Galifinakis comedy The Campaign which did well coming in second with a better than expected $27 million and Hope Springs which opened to a good $15.6 million. Springs, starring Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones who are both absolutely brilliant in the film which I gave a “A-/B+” grade to, has taken in a total of $20 million since opening on Wednesday and should have strong legs in the month ahead as most Streep and female-centered August films do. (For examples, see the femme-centric August hits Julie & Julia, Eat Pray Love and The Help.) … Holding up well in its second weekend was the latest Wimpy Kid film and The Dark Knight Rises while Total Recall tanked in its sophomore week. For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and take a look at the new top ten below.

“The Dark Knight Rises” Continues to Crush the Competition

August 6, 2012

After quickly disposing of The Watch and Step Up Revolution last weekend, The Dark Knight Rises took out two more new releases as it crushed the competition with $36.4 million in its third weekend. That brought its domestic total to a big $354 million and I see at least another $80-100 million to come… Unfortunately with Knight continuing to do so well, the remake of Total Recall and the third film in the Wimpy Kid series faltered. Opening to $26 million, the uber-expensive remake of Recall with Collin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel landed under expectations and will have a real hard time making even half its production cost back. (I’m not surprised. I saw the film and give it a “C+” grade. It’s a humorless pointless remake that isn’t even fun or campy like the original. Beckinsale does kick some serious ass though and Farrell is pretty delish)… Luckily for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, the family film had a low production cost and its opening of $14.7 million wasn’t too bad. It just isn’t likely to match the success of its predecessors…. For more on all these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

“The Dark Knight” Steps on “Step Up” and “The Watch”

July 30, 2012

Despite competition from the Olympics and moviegoers still trepidatious about heading to the theaters following the Aurora, CO tragedy, The Dark Knights Rises still took in a huge $62.8 million at the box office over the weekend for a big total of $287.8 million. The film is in third place in terms of movies getting to that bit a total so quickly following The Dark Knight and The Avengers. I expect Rises will rise to the $500 million range when all is said and done…. Opening in the wake of Batman was the latest dreadful comedy from Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller and Jonah Hill, The Watch, which tanked big time with only $13 million (on a nearly $70 million budget~ that’s baaaaaad!). Also getting squashed by the Caped Crusader was the fourth installment in the Step Up franchise, Step Up Revolution, which managed a disappointing $11.8 million. Luckily for that film, it didn’t cost much to produce and is a big-ticket outside the U.S., so it should end up profitable in the end… For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

Canadian Idol refugee Carly Rae Jepsen makes it a lucky 7 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100 with her debut single “Call Me Maybe” this week as she fends off Maroon 5 and Katy Perry in a tight battle. We could finally see a new number one next week as she is losing points while the others continue to gain. There’s not much other news on the singles chart aside from a little jump for Flo Rida‘s “Whistle” which may be a threat in the weeks ahead.
