“Pain & Gain” Doesn’t Have Much Muscle But Still Tops the Box Office

April 29, 2013

PAIN-AND-GAIN_POSTER_2013The new action film about muscle-head criminals (and the true life scandal about their actions), Pain and Gain, topped the box office this weekend with $20 million. It was a lackluster opening considering the combined power of stars Mark Wahlberg and The Rock, and the poor audience reaction does not bode well for its future. But, it still won the weekend over Tom Cruise’s Oblivion which added another $17 million for a decent $64 million after two weeks. Both films should take huge hits next week when Iron Man 3 crashes the party… One other film opened this weekend and was DOA as the star-studded romantic comedy The Big Wedding with Robert DeNiro, Susan Sarandon, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton and Topher Grace tanked with only $7.5 million. For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo and check out the new top ten below… The summer movie season can’t get here soon enough is all I’m saying!

Tom Cruise Tops the Box Office with “Oblivion”

April 23, 2013

oblivion-movie-poster-tom-cruiseTom Cruise rebounded at the box office this weekend after the poor performance of Jack Reacher last December with his new sic fi flick Oblivion as it opened to $37 million. That was a good number, but not great considering how expensive the film is and the mediocre audience reception. Nonetheless, the film is doing well globally for Cruise and Universal and has another week ahead before the barrage of the big summer movie season. It was the only new release in the top ten as The Croods and 42 enjoyed strong holds. Take a look at all the numbers below and head to Box Office Mojo for more.

GLEE takes on Moulin Rouge and I Love It!

March 9, 2013

This week, Glee went to the movies covering some of the best songs of all time from the cinema like “Shout” from Animal House, “Unchained Melody” from Ghost, and “Footloose” from Footloose. However, there were two performances that really stood out. First the guys from the Glee club did a Tom Cruise homage with an awesome mashup of “Danger Zone/Old Time Rock n’ Roll” from Top Gun and Risky Business. However, the second was my favorite and it comes from my favorite movie of all time, the brilliant Oscar-winning musical Moulin Rouge. Singing the Golden Globe winning love anthem “Come What May”, Kurt (Golden Globe winner Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) declared their love for each other in a wonderful dream sequence. It was fantastic and is aptly the biggest selling song from the episode on iTunes. Check out both songs below and watch Glee Thursday nights on Fox.

It’s My Big Bold Golden Globe Nomination Predictions 2012!

December 12, 2012

samantha-barks-les-misThe past week or so has been a whirlwind of activity in this year’s awards derby and tomorrow will continue that momentum with the announcement of this year’s Golden Globe nominees… Expect to see a lot of the names you’ve heard so far this season like Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Argo. It’s Bombs Away at the Box Office Again

June 18, 2012

Just when you thought the summer box office was turning itself around, Hollywood drops two more stink bombs on audiences as Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy both tanked in their opening weekends. You can add those bombs to this seasons list of underachievers like Dark Shadows and The Dictator and disasters like Battleship and The Chernobyl Diaries. In fact, only The Avengers and Madagascar 3 (which won the weekend again with a strong $35 million for $120 million after only 2 weeks) can be considered big summer successes. Prometheus and Snow White which both opened well don’t look like they will gross more than their production costs and MIB3 will be saved with international grosses. So, it’s been pretty bad news all around… Heading back to this week’s releases Adam Sandler has his worst opener in ages with the dreadful That’s My Boy which took in a paltry $13 million while the delightfully fun and incredibly entertaining if rather slight rock musical Rock of Ages nabbed an underwhelming $15 million. I’m sad for Rock as I truly enjoyed the film with fantastic performances from Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta Jones and gave it an overall “B+” grade. Maybe I’m just partial to that amazing 80′s music. We’ll see if it can hold up in the weeks ahead as musicals sometimes have good legs, but this auspicious start is not a good one…. For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo and check out the new top ten below.

Rock of Ages Preview~ “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”!

June 12, 2012

The all-star movie musical Rock of Ages hits theaters this weekend and I’m a little too excited about it. I’m not sure if it’s gonna be a hot mess or a really well crafted movie musical (ala Hairspray which was also directed by Ages helmer Adam Shankman), but I will be there day 1 to find out. Regardless, it looks like a really good time and the curiosity factor of seeing Tom Cruise as the ultimate rock god is pretty much reason enough to see it. I’m also thrilled to see Oscar winner Catharine Zeta-Jones back singing and dancing on the big screen like she did in the brilliant Chicago. In the film, she plays an anti-rock crusader and sings the big Pat Benatar classic “Hit Me with Your Best Shot”. Now, I have your first look at that scene below. Check it out!

And check out the full film trailer below. The movie which chronicles the rise of two young Hollywood wannabes played by newcomer Diego Luna and Dancing with the Stars’ Julianne Hough on the rocking Sunset Strip in the 80′s also stars Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Malin Ackerman, Bryan Cranston and the aforementioned Cruise and Zeta-Jones. Ages features some of the best rock and metal anthems of the 80′s from the likes of Poison, Bon Jovi, Journey, Foreigner, Guns N’ Roses, Warrant, Quiet Riot, Night Ranger, Extreme, Def Leppard and more! It hits theaters this Friday June 15.

Tom Cruise Welcomes 2012 at the Top of the Box Office Again while Meryl Streep makes her Move

January 2, 2012

Perhaps the comeback of the year for 2012 is already a done deal with Mr. Tom Cruise. The previously polarizing, and formerly loved, actor seems to be getting back into everyone’s good graces on account of his smash box office hit, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocal. The fourth film in the series lead the weekend again with another $31.2 million for a total of $134 million. Watch this one to cruise, pun intended, to somewhere over $200 million when all is said and done. Landing in second over the new year weekend was Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows with another $22 million for a total of $132 million. Both films were up big over the past weekend as was every movie with War Horse gaining the most up 25%. Take a look at all the films and their strong grosses below… One more note belongs to Meryl Streep who should win an Oscar for her new film The Iron Lady. The drama opened in limited release over the weekend in just 4 theaters with a gigantic per screen average of $55,450. Meryl can do no wrong! … For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here.

It’s Mission Accomplished as Ghost Protocal controls the Christmas Box Office

December 27, 2011

If you had asked most Hollywood executives who would rule the Christmas box office this year, most would have said Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes. But lo and behold a rejuvenated Tom Cruise destroyed the competition with his four-quel Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol which took in $46 million over the 4 day holiday weekend. That makes for a $78 million total take for the film which is headed to blockbuster status which would be a first for Cruise since 2005′s War of the Worlds. (And let me add, that the latest Mission is actually pretty darn good. It’s a very solid and entertaining if a tad ludicrous action film. Grade: B+) Holding up decently in second was Sherlock Homes with another $31 million while Alvin and the Chipmunks took third with $20 million just barely beating the $19 million for the awesome new R rated action drama The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Opening modestly with $16 million was Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tin Tin which barely edged Spielberg’s War Horse and Matt Damon’s We Bought a Zoo. All of the aforementioned films should have a nice week ahead with children out of school and many people off of work. One film that is DOA though was the final opener, the horror film The Darkest Hour which tanked with just $5 million. For more on all these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

More Box Office Blahs as the Chipmunks and Sherlock Holmes Underwhelm

December 19, 2011

The 2011 Box Office losing streak continued with another lackluster weekend as two highly anticipated sequels debuted with underwhelming results. While they were still decent grosses, Sherlock was down by around $20 million from the first installment while Alvin & Co were down by 50%. Luckily for both films, they should have legs in the weeks ahead as kids are out of school and many people have holiday break time for moviegoing. Opening best in first was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with $40 million while Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked landed $23.5 million… The surprise of the weekend was Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible -Ghost Protocal. The fourth film in the series opened to $13 million in just 425 theatres for a massive $30,500 average per theatre. That bodes well for its national release later this week. Take a look at the new top ten below and head to Box Office Mojo for more on all the numbers.

First Look~ “Rock of Ages” the movie!

December 13, 2011

Adam Shankman scored a big hit with his movie version of the Tony winning musical Hairspray. The film was awesome and even garnered some awards love (grabbing Golden Globe and SAG nods). Now, the director/producer/choreographer (and sometime So You Think You Can Dance judge)is at it again with a new cinematic version of the Tony nominated musical Rock of Ages. The show chronicles the rise of two young wannabe rockers and the metal scene of Hollywood in 1987 set to the music of some of the best rock, metal and pop acts of the decade like Foreigner, Def Leppard, Twisted Sister and Pat Benatar. It features an all-star cast including Oscar nominee Tom Cruise, Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Alec Baldwin, Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Paul Giamatti, Julianna Hough, Malin Ackerman, Grammy winner Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand and newcomer Diego Bonita. The first trailer for the film which hits theatres this summer just popped up on the web and the question is… does it rock? … Well, um, no. But it does look fun and I live for a musical. So, I’ll be there regardless. I have to say Zeta-Jones looks to be a standout (no surprise) and I’m surprisingly impressed with the brief images of Cruise. But what do you think? take a look at the trailer below and tell me if you think this film will be one for the ages or should be stuffed under a rock.
