Holdovers Hold Up while Brad Bombs at the Weekend Box Office

December 3, 2012

killing-them-softly-latest-posterIn the traditionally slow weekend after Thanksgiving, Hollywood rarely releases big new film because they seem to always tank. Well, this weekend they offered up two new movies, and wouldn’t you know it, they both bombed. Poor Brad Pitt’s well reviewed by moviegoer-reviled flick Killing Them Softly took in a paltry $7 million for a seventh place debut while the horror crapfest The Collection did even worse with just $ 3.4 million…. With this news, I wonder if the studios will avoid the weekend again next year? … In the meantime, their holdovers did quite well as Twlight, Skyfall, Lincoln, The Life of Pi and Rise of the Guardians all did double digits. Take a look at the new top ten below and head to Box Office Mojo for the latest on the numbers.

“Twilight” Opens Big but “Lincoln” is the Real Surprise at the Box Office

November 18, 2012

As expected the final installment in the craptastic Twilight series, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt. 2, opened to a big number at the box office this weekend. However, the more interesting news is just how well Lincoln did in its first weekend in wide release… Breaking Dawn took in a giant $141 million for the second highest opening in the franchise’s history (behind New Moon) and the 8th biggest opening of all time. As usual, the grosses are likely to be front loaded for the film, but it should finish with a respectable sum making this series one of the most profitable (despite the lack in quality) in film history…. Aside from the vamps and werewolves, a President was making some news of his own this weekend as Steven Spielberg‘s Oscar bait Lincoln far surpassed expectations to rope in a very strong $21 million. That makes it the third big studio drama after Argo and Flight to pull in very good grosses this fall. Hopefully that will be a sign that quality dramatic films should be made by the studios, not just mindless popcorn flicks… Holding up quite well in its second weekend was the James Bond smash Skyfall which took in another $41.5 million for a total of $161 million and will become the highest grossing Bond pic in the next two days…. For more on all these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

Jason Mraz and Christina Perri go the “Distance”

July 26, 2012

So, what’s the best way to publicize a summer tour? For Madonna, it might be flashing various body parts but for singer songwriters Jason Mraz and Christina Perri, the answer is by releasing new music. The two hit makers hit the road together this August and have marked the occasion by releasing a gorgeous new ballad “Distance”. The single is easily the best duet to hit the airwaves since Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson’s Grammy nominated smash “Don’t You Wanna Stay” a couple of years ago. I think this single could prove pretty popular as well and could contend for next year’s Grammys in the Pop Vocal Duo/Group or Collaboration category. The song is the followup to Mraz’s recent top ten hit “I Won’t Give Up” and Perri’s hit from the last Twilight film “A Thousand Years“. Check out their new one below and here’s some quick trivia for ya. Did you know that Mraz’s Grammy winning # 6 hit “I’m Yours” holds the record for the longest running song on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with 76 weeks on the list? For more on their tour, head here and enjoy “Distance” below.

Pitbull v. Huey Lewis~ “Back in Time”

March 28, 2012

Are movie soundtracks about to have a rebirth? Over the past few years, hit soundtracks have been few and far between unless it was a from a film musical (like Mamma Mia) or the tween crap Twilight saga. However, the current # 1 album in the country is The Hunger Games soundtrack and this spring and summer, there are a lot of big movie music collections coming at you like Think Like a Man,  Sparkle, Rock of Ages, and MIB 3. The latter film is the third action packed movie in the Men In Black trilogy starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. This new film has them going back in time to the sixties and, fittingly, the theme song for MIB 3 is entitled “Back in Time” by Pitbull. This Latin infused dance track also features a sample from another hit movie song, the 60′s hit “Love is Strange” by Micky & Sylvia which gained legions of new fans when it appeared in Dirty Dancing…. Now, the title “Back in Time” may be familiar to a lot of 80′s movie fans as it was the title of the Huey Lewis & the News hit song from 1985′s Back to the Future…. So now I pose this question to you~ which song really makes you want to go “Back in Time”? For me, Huey Lewis wins by a mile. What about you? Take a listen to both below and let me know in the comments section and watch for MIB3 to hit cinemas on May 25th.

The Hunger Games~ Please let this be better than that Twilight crap!

November 16, 2011

The latest film in the crapfest Twilight film series hits theatres this weekend and you can’t pay me to see it. However, there’s a new teen literary to film phenomena coming our way that I may just have to check out. It’s the adaptation of the popular Hunger Games series. These books follow a young boy and girl from 12 different districts that are forced to fight to the death by their capital in a future society. Unlike Twitard which features atrocious acting (ahem Kristen Stewart and the lovely but boring Taylor Launter, to name a few), these Games feature an awesome cast lead by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones),  SAG Award nominee Josh Hutcherson (The Kids Are Alright), Emmy nominee Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock), Grammy winner Lenny Kravitz, plus Liam Hemsworth (The Last Song) and two-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson (The Messenger, The People V. Larry Flint). The action packed drama hits theatres in March and I’m cautiously optimistic. Take a look at the trailer below and let me know if you think this one will be worth your while.

Taylor Lautner ~ Action Hero?

April 15, 2011

Sure Taylor Lautner has a ridiculously hot buff bod and can make the girls (and the gays) squeal with his turn in the Twilight films. But now the question on Hollywood’s mind is~ can he be the next big action hero? Well, we will find out come September when his first lead role outside the Twilight series hits theatres. In Abduction, Taylor plays a teen who has always felt disconnected, and ventures to discover his true origins which unleashes a chain of violent events. Co-starring in the film are Lily Collins (yes, that’s Phil’s daughter), Maria Bello, Jason Isaacs, Alfred Molina and three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver (Aliens, Working Girl, Gorillas in the Mist). Looking at the first trailer below, I’m still on the fence as to whether Taylor can carry a film himself. However, the action looks credible and the supporting cast is strong which should help out if Taylor focuses on his abs instead of his emotions… Regardless, we’ll find out if the werewolf can become a true leading man when Abduction hits theatres on Sept. 23rd. Check out the trailer below.

Is it The Advocate or Entertainment Weekly?

June 24, 2010

Ok, this picture says it all…. Twilight is officially more gay than  Richard Simmons, and I say that with love. Take a look at the new cover of The Advocate, er, I’m sorry, Entertainment Weekly for all the proof you need… And scene.

The Twi-hards own the MTV Movie Awards… and Xtina!

June 7, 2010

Last night was all about Twilight at the MTV Movie Awards where the sequel, Twilight: New Moon, swept the outrageous awards show for the second year in a row. On the one hand, it should be no surprise that it won everything because the Twi-tards are crazy obsessive in their support for this franchise, but it’s still rather annoying that the iminently unlikable and untalented Kristen Stewart wins best actress for it over Oscar winner Sandra Bullock. At least, Bullock picked up the “Generation Award” for her work. She also gave a great speech and received some plaudits from her funny costars Betty White and Bradley Cooper. Oh, and yeah, she kissed Scarlett Johanson, yada yada…. I guess it’s also interesting to note that New Moon demolished Avatar beating it in all of its categories. Apparently the all time highest grossing movie isn’t so loved after all. (And um, if you look at attendance numbers it is no where near being the most successful movie ever. It lags far behind Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, E.T. and others.) The show also featured comedian Aziz Ansari giving it his best shot as host. Unfortunately the hilarious star of Parks and Recreation suffered the fate of most hosts of this show: having to perform to a somewhat indifferent audience who wasn’t listening. We also got a lot of stupid comedy bits from the likes of Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Adam Sandler and his buddies and a terrible dance number from Tom Cruise (as his Tropic Thunder alter ego) with J Lo. I guess most of the audience was amused by the last one. Me, not so much. I did enjoy Christina Aguilera’s no holds barred performance though and Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry (who sang some of her song live even) were decent. For all of the info on the show, check out MTV’s website. Your full list of winners is below:

Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart (New Moon)
Best Breakout Star: Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air)
Best Scared as Sh*! Performance: Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer’s Body)
Best Kiss: Stewart and Robert Pattinson (New Moon)
Best WTF Moment: Ken Jeong (The Hangover)
Best Villain: Tom Felton (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)
