CBS Bets On Laughs with their 2013 Fall Schedule

May 15, 2013

the-crazy-ones-robin-williams-sarah-michelle-gellarApparently CBS is ready to make Thursday night “Must See TV” again as they attempt to conquer the night NBC owned with hit comedies for decades with their first two-hour comedy block this fall. Joining hits The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men on the night will be the new Robin Williams/Sarah Michelle Gellar comedy The Crazy Ones and the Wil Arnett-starrer The Millers. Those comedies will lead into Elementary for a fun night of TV. It’s the biggest move for the network which is pretty darn stable throughout the rest of its schedule… However, they will have their first split season serialized dramas on Monday nights with Hostages and Intelligence sharing the 10pm slot and displacing Hawaii Five-O to Fridays…. Other news was the cancellation of long-running utility player Rules of Engagement and holding Mike & Molly for midseason…. For more on the new CBS schedule head here or to Deadline.com and check out the new schedule below.

Game of Thrones Conquers the Creative Arts Emmy Awards

September 16, 2012

Kathy Griffin may call them the “Shmemmys” but the Creative Arts Emmys are actually the same as the regular Emmys. They just don’t make it onto the big awards telecast. They did, however, take place tonight and in years past, they are where Griffin was a 2 time winner. This year, she may have lost her bid for a golden guy, but Game of Thrones was up for 13 and that fantastic series led tonight’s winners with 6 awards. Tonight’s ceremony honored mostly the creative and technical categories like lighting, editing and art direction, but there were a few big awards. Taking home the Best Non Fiction Program (i.e.: reality show award) for the first time was Undercover Boss while Smash pulled an upset in the Choreography category out dancing several amazing contenders from So You Think You Can Dance. In the casting categories, Homeland, Game Change and Girls prevailed (yay for the first two, not so much the latter) while there were 4 acting awards handed out in the Guest Actor categories. Taking the Drama Guest Actor Awards were Jeremy Davies for Justified and Martha Plimpton for The Good Wife. (An extra yay for Plimpton who is brilliant on that show and was surprisingly omitted from the very competitive Best Actress Comedy Series race this year for Raising Hope after grabbing a nod last year.) On the comedy side, Jimmy Fallon won for hosting Saturday Night Live while Kathy Bates finally landed a win for playing Charlie Sheen’s old character on Two and A Half Men after 11 nominations. (She could still won next week for her work on Harry’s Law too)… For more on all the winners and the Emmys, head here. Then check out all the winners below and be sure to catch the Big Folk Emmy Awards next Sunday Sept. 23rd on ABC.

Stability is the Name of the Game on CBS’s Fall 2012 Schedule

May 16, 2012

CBS has been the network with the biggest overall audience for like a decade or so and it is likely to stay that way with a very stable new fall slate for 2012. The question is can they get the younger viewers that all the networks covet? With the addition of a new comedy called Partners from the Will & Grace creators starring Michael Urie and David Krumholtz as business partners and best friends, one gay and one straight, they could hit pay dirt. The show is joining the Monday comedy lineup which will now be anchored by last year’s breakout hit 2 Broke Girls as Two and a Half Men moves to Thursday…. The other big move is The Mentalist heading to Sundays following CBS’s best show The Good Wife… New dramas include Elementary with Johnny Lee Miller as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as his Watson, Vegas starring Dennis Quaid in the city’s 60′s heyday, and a law drama called Made in Jersey with Kyle MacLachlan and Janet Montgomery... Midseason brings the cop drama Golden Boy, the comedy Friend Me with Christopher Mintz-Plasse and the reality show The Job…. Making room for these new contenders meant it was cancellation time for A Gifted Man, Unforgettable, Rob, and CSI Miami after 10 seasons… Also, there’s no official word on the return of Rules of Engagement, but the veteran comedy is rumored to be returning for one final 13 episode season later in the year. For more on all of CBS’s shows and their lineup, head to Deadline Hollywood here and check out the schedule below.

Check Out CBS’s new 2011 Fall Schedule

May 18, 2011

For a network on top, CBS made some bold moves with its new fall schedule. Looking to maintain stability and grow some new hits, the network will be moving two of its signature shows. Long running hit CSI moves to Wed night at 10pm while the best drama on network TV, The Good Wife, moves to Sundays at 9pm for a battle with ABC’s Desperate Housewives. Also of note, CBS is doing some original programming on Saturday nights with the return of the comedy Rules of Engagement becoming the first sitcom to run new episodes on that night in ages… Fall also brings the revamped Two and a Half Men which says buh bye to crazy pants Charlie Sheen and hello to “no longer a movie star” Ashton Kutcher. Will it keep the ratings up? Will people care? Will the show ever be funny? Stay tuned… And check out the whole new schedule plus descriptions of the new shows below. For more on CBS, head here.

NOT RETURNING NEXT SEASON: Mad Love, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior, $#*! My Dad Says and The Defenders

And coming at midseason is The 2-2, a new drama from Robert DeNiro about rookie NYPD detectives starring Leelee Sobieski, Adam Goldberg and Stark Sands.

And here’s my quick take on their new schedule:

The Good: they picked up The Good Wife!! Plus, it’s smart to make some big moves on Thursday night with their most promising new show Person of Interest.

The Bad: shouldn’t they have just dumped Two and a Half Men instead? … And I’m not too big on the move for The Good Wife.

The Blah: pretty much the rest of the schedule… Oh and Undercover Boss is coming back at midseason…
