Little Big Town Motorboat thru the CMA’s

November 2, 2012

Little Big Town rode their motorboating anthem “Pontoon” to the awards stage at last night’s Country Music Association Awards winning two awards which also happened to be their first wins at this show to date. They also performed that ridiculously addictive song and were clearly the night’s happiest winners. They weren’t the biggest winner though as that title went to Blake Shelton who picked up three awards including Entertainer of the Year for the second consecutive year and Best Song for “Over You” which he shared with his wife, the song’s co-writer, Miranda Lambert. Lambert also won Female Vocalist again…. One big surprise was Hunter Hayes picking up the New Artist award, but I say he deserved it and he gave a winning performance of his smash “Wanted”. Other performers included the Zac Brown Band, winner Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Faith Hill and a brilliant duet from Kelly Clarkson and Vince Gill which was easily the night’s best vocal. Also performing were the night’s hysterical hosts Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley whose opening monologue was a riot not to mention had them dancing “Gangam Style”…. For more on the show, head to the CMA site here and check out all the winners below.

Frank Ocean, the Zac Brown Band, P!nk and, yes, Adele, make Noise on the Charts

July 19, 2012

Proving they can pull a Mariah Carey or a Sheryl Crow and beat the Best New Artist Grammy curse, country crooners the Zac Brown Band land at # 1 on the Billboard 200 this week with their sophomore release, Uncaged. They also top the country charts. Debuting big right behind them is the first out and proud gay R&B hip hop artist Frank Ocean with his major label debut, Channel Orange. Ocean’s debut is also of note because the record beat out much more highly promoted recent releases by Usher and that bastard Chris Brown…. The other album making noise in the top ten was Adele‘s 21 which extended its run in the top ten to an astonishing 73 weeks giving it the record for the longest weeks in the top ten for an album by a female artist. Adele beats out Alanis Morissette’s debut album Jagged Little Pill which had reigned for the past 17 years with 72 weeks. Congrats Adele…. For more on these albums, head to Billboard here and check out the new top ten below.

Over on the Hot 100 Singles chart, P!nk blasts into the top ten with her brand new single “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)” which sails up from 58-9. This song gives P!nk her 12th Hot 100 top ten. She previously hit # 1 on the Hot 100 with “So What”, “Raise Your Glass” and “Lady Marmalade” with Christina Aguilera, Mya and Lil Kim. P!nk could hit the top soon but she will have to fend off Carly Rae Jepsen whose “Call Me Maybe” extends its run to 6 weeks at # 1 this week. Adele and Darius Rucker outdo Lady Antebellum on their own Song!

December 5, 2010

This weekend CMT aired their Artist of the Year awards celebrating the biggest Country artists of 2010. Among those honored were Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, the Zac Brown Band, Jason Aldean and Lady Antebellum (who also just picked up 6 Grammy nominations). The show featured some great performances by the winners plus two surprise covers. First Maroon 5 took on Taylor Swift’s “Mine” and it was fun, but the real treat came later when Grammy winning Hootie & the Blowfish lead singer turned country star Darius Rucker and Grammy winner Adele sang Lady A’s ubiquitous smash hit “Need You Now”. And dare, I say, they improved on the original. It was a beautiful soulful performance and certainly better than the country group’s recent live performances of this great song. You could tell the group loved it too as it brought the group’s Hilary Lindsay to tears. Check it out below and watch for reruns of the Artist of the Year awards on CMT.

And here’s a fantastic medley by tonight’s winner Carrie Underwood of her # 1 smashes from 2010 “Cowboy Casanova”, “Temporary Home” and “Undo It”.

Lil Wayne takes down the Country Crew

October 20, 2010

Rapper Lil Wayne made an impressive leap from # 16 to the top of the charts this week as his album, I Am Not a Human Being, finally got a full release in stores. Previously the album peaked two weeks ago and has only been available through digital retailers, but with physical copies hitting the shelves, he moved another 125,000 units to hit # 1. Wayne prevented former Hootie and the Blowfish singer Darius Rucker’s second country album from hitting the top as it landed at # 2 with 101,000 copies. It does lead the country album charts though. In fact, there’s a whole lot of country in the top ten with albums by Rucker, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, The Zac Brown Band and a debut from The Band Perry at # 4. Other debuts in the top ten this week came from Nickelodeon teen group Big Time Rush plus Sufjan Stevens and All That Remains. For all your chart needs, head to Billboard here. The Zac Brown Band puts the smack down on Maroon 5!

September 30, 2010

Going into this weekend’s new top album charts, most prognosticators had Maroon 5′s third album, Hands All Over, pegged to be an easy # 1 debut. However, they clearly underestimated those Grammy winning country upstarts the Zac Brown Band who landed on top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums this week outselling the pop act 153,000 copies to 142,000 copies. It was a tight race, but both acts should take solace in the fact that they will likely sell well into the holiday season. Those two albums lead a pack 6 debuts in the top 10 including the latest from Santana, country crooner Billy Currington, the sophomore album from Selena Gomez & the Scene and the new collaboration from John Legend and The Roots. For all your chart needs, click Billboard here. Check out the top 10 below, plus Maroon 5′s new single “Give A Little More” which is the follow-up to their top 20 Hot 100 and # 1 Hot AC hit “Misery”.
