Adele keeps Rolling over the Competition

If there’s any news on the music charts in 2011, you know it’s about Adele. The British phenom has destroyed all comers this year on the album chart with her massively successful, and may I add utterly incredible, sophomore album 21. So far it has passed 1.7 million in sales and this week it holds on to the # 1 spot on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for an 8th week stopping new discs from Christina Perri, The Lonely Island and The Cars. She also retains the top position on the Hot 100 singles chart and the Digital Singles Sales chart with “Rolling in the Deep”. In fact, it’s likely she’ll hold on to these positions next week again. Is there anyone who could stop her? … Well, I’d say the only one who has that power is Lady Gaga. Her new album, Born This Way is due next week and should easily take over the album charts. However, her latest single “The Edge of Glory” just missed the top of the singles chart opening at # 2 on the Digital chart and # 3 on the Hot 100. Now, the single is still brand new and hasn’t even been pushed much at radio. (They’re still working “Judas” and “Born This Way” in their rotations). So, it could still hit the top (and I’d say it deserves to), so stay tuned… in the meantime take a look at the new albums chart below.

Also debuting this week was Glee star Matthew Morrison’s first record, Matthew Morrison at # 24. It could climb in the weeks ahead as he will perform the new single “Still Got Tonight” on the Glee finale next week… Speaking of Glee, they have six songs on the Hot 100 including a cover of the #1 single “Rolling in the Deep”. That version starts at #29, while their version of internet sensation Rebecca Black’s “Friday” launches at # 34. (FYI- her original only peaked at # 58)…. This week’s second highest debut after Gaga belongs to Enrique Iglesias’s “Dirty Dancer” featuring Usher & Lil Wayne at # 18. For more on all the charts, head to Billboard here.
