Box Office~ “The Help” is a big ole Hit!

The Help needed no helping hand at the box office this weekend as it over-performed most expectations pulling in $$25.5 million on top of the $10 million it earned since opening Wednesday. That’s a total of $35 million for the film which only cost $25 million and it should have strong legs in the weeks ahead. It helps that The Help, starring the brilliant Viola Davis, Emma Stone and Octavia Spencer, is getting rave reviews from audience members and strong notices from critics. (I give the film an “A+”~ the best movie of the year so far!). In fact, I see such a great road ahead for the movie that it could get a boost months down the road from likely Oscar nominations…. Also needing no help was Rise of the Planet of the Apes which narrowly won the weekend with a strong $27 million for a two-week tally of $104 million. It’s the surprise action smash of the summer…. With the good news for those films and strong holds for Crazy Stupid Love and Captain America came disappointing news for three other new films. Final Destination 5 arrived way under expectations to an ok $18.4 million while the new comedy 30 Minutes or Less opened poorly to $13 million making it the second R rated bomb comedy in a row following the mess that is The Change Up. Finally, I’m sad to say Glee Live 3D Concert Movie fared poorly as well barely registering with $5.7 million and that’s a shame because it’s an incredibly moving and entertaining film. (I give it an “A” grade.) Perhaps the gleeks have already spent enough on the tour and music downloads that they didn’t see the need to head to the cinemas, not to mention the show returns for another season next month….. For more on these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top eleven (yes I had to stretch it this weekend) below.
