“The Help” wins again while “The Debt” surprises at the Labor Day Box Office

The Help is shaping up to be one of the biggest hits of the year. Considering its miniscule $25 million budget, the film has now taken in almost five times that amount with another $19 million over the long holiday weekend for a big total of $123 million. And it should play well into the fall and Oscar season, so it will be one of the most profitable films of the year. Disney has to be thrilled with it, especially considering the disappointing cume for Cars 2 which was super expensive and will just break even. (It’s also Pixar’s lowest grossing film since A Bug’s Life over a decade ago)… So, who did The Help fight off this weekend? Well, the horror films Apollo 18 and Shark Night 3D both saw lackluster grosses to land in third and fourth place. They were both beaten by the surprisingly strong older skewing thriller The Debt which landed in second with $12.5 million in over 1000 less theatres than the other newbies. With good critical notices and audience response, The Debt could have a nice road ahead with its competitors will likely vanish in two weeks…. Since it was a long weekend, we saw some great holds for Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Smurfs as well. Take a look at the new top ten below. And for more info, head to www.boxofficemojo.com
