“The Avengers” take a Big Bite out of “Dark Shadows” at the Box Office

There’s no stopping The Avengers as they plummet all the competition into the box office record books. The awesome comic book film took in a gargantuan $103 million in its second week for the best second weakend in history demolishing Avatar’s previous record of $75 million. That now brings The Avengers total to a massive $373 million also giving it the title of fastest film to hit $300 million and $350 million in history. Worldwide, the movie has now grossed over $1 billion. Hello, that’s a smash, and there is a lot more to come for the film in the weeks ahead. With all the money that film made, there was little left for the latest Johnny Depp/Tim Burton collaboration, Dark Shadows. The creepy comedy, an update from the gothic 1960’s soap opera, took in a disappointing $28.8 million hit with mixed reviews and audience reaction. (I saw the film today and was pleasantly surprised. It’s rather fun and what I’d expect from a Depp/Burton project. I gave it a “B+” grade). We will see if overseas grosses will help send this expensive picture to profitability as the summer continues…. With the Mother’s Day holiday in effect, it seemed the ladies movie of choice wast the delightful worldwide hit comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel which expanded to 178 theaters and easily hit the top ten with $ 3.1 million and a big $14,888 per theatre average. I think this one has a very bright future… For more on all these films and the records The Avengers is leaving in its wake, head to Box Office Mojo here. And check out the new top ten below.
