Jake Gyllenhaal takes down Bad Guys and an Old Guy at the Box Office

It was another slow weekend at the box office as 4 new films opened to lackluster results. Faring best was the low-budget indie cop drama End of Watch (my film grade: A-) surpassing most expectations which pulled in a good $13 million considering its small $7 million budget. That gave Jake Gyllenhaal the edge over Oscar winning cranky old man Clint Eastwood whose The Trouble with the Curve (my grade: C-) landed in third with just $12 million. Sandwiched between the two was the cheap horror film The House at the End of the Street starring Jennifer Lawrence‘s with $12.2 million. Tanking the most was the new comic adaptation of Dredd with a dreadful $6.2 million…. Climbing into the top ten was the Oscar contender The Master with $4.3 million in only 788 theaters. Unfortunately, that only gave it a middling $5572 theatre average showing movie goers are not responding the way critics are. I’ll tell you why~ that movie is terrible, indulgent, boring, pedantic and annoying (my grade which is saved by some nice performances by Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams: C-.)… Opening fantastically in super limited release was my favorite movie of the year thus far, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, with a giant $57,000 per theatre average. It should expand quite well over the next few weeks…. For more on all these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.
