“Jack and the Giant Slayer” Stumbles on another Wimpy Weekend at the Box Office

220px-Jack_the_Giant_Slayer_posterThe first big budget “epic” movie of 2013 opened this weekend. Unfortunately it also massively underperformed. The long delayed fantasy adventure Jack and the Giant Slayer did debut at # 1 with $28 million. However, its production budget was $195 million (without marketing costs), so the film seems rather unlikely to ever break even. We’ll see if international grosses help the cause…. Slayer held off two other lackluster debuts from the comedy 21 & Over with $9 million and The Last Exorcism Pt. 2 with just $8 million. While those are certainly bad numbers, at least both of the latter films had small production budgets and won’t see the huge losses Slayer is likely to incur…. Also opening in limited release to a good per screen average of over $22,000 in just 7 theaters with the dreadfully awful horror thriller Stoker. (I gave the atrocious film a “D” grade.) I have a feeling once it opens nationally, its numbers will tank due to just how disappointing a picture it is. Stay tuned… In the meantime, take a look at the new top ten below and head to Box Office Mojo for more info and to see how the Oscars boosted grosses for the big winners.
