Could Whoopi and Janet bring Tyler Perry to the Oscars?

September 15, 2010

Tyler Perry is a massively successful filmmaker (the Madea series, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, etc), TV producer (House of Payne), film producer (Precious) and an acclaimed theatre star (the Madea series as well) who has built his own industry in Atlanta with his entertainment projects. With all of that clout, you’d think he’d have it all. However, one thing he rarely gets is critical acclaim. But, with his latest project, that all could change. His new film, For Colored Girls, is an adaptation of the revered play ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf’ by Ntozake Shange. For once, Perry will be working with someone else’s source material and is directing a host of talented women in this story of 20 African-American women with interlocking stories that looks like it could be full of Oscar bait performances. Among his cast are Oscar nominee and Grammy winner Janet Jackson, Tony winner Anika Noni Rose (Caroline or Change, Dreamgirls), Tony winner and Emmy nominee Phylicia Rashad (The Cosby Show), Grammy nominee Macy Gray, SAG Award winner Thandie Newton, Loretta Devine,  Kimberly Elise, SAG nominee Kerry Washington and Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner Whoopi Goldberg to name a few. By going outside of his comfort zone, taking on an outside acclaimed source material and working with some top-tier talent, Perry may just land in the kudos derby for the first time. Check out the trailer below and let me know your thoughts and see the film in theatres on Nov. 5.
