“Lincoln” and “Les Mis” Lead the BAFTA Noms

January 9, 2013

a01-lincoln-movie-ear-09-4_3_r560Lincoln continues its run as the Oscar front-runner as it pulled in 10 BAFTA nominations this morning ahead of Les Miserables and Life of Pi with 9 each and Skyfall with 8 (including Javier Bardem and Judi Dench in the Supporting Actor categories). The big surprise was the snub of Lincoln and Les Mis directors Steven Spielberg and Tom Hooper who both missed the cut… In fact, the story of the day is actually the other people snubbed by the British academy. Getting no love this morning were Denzel Washington, Naomi Watts, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert DeNiro who all didn’t make the cut…. So just who did? Take a look at the full list below which featured a surprisingly strong showing for Anna Karenina and a huge shocker with Ben Affleck in the Best Actor category. Winners will be announced just before the Oscar ceremony next month.

“Wreck It Ralph” Wakes Up the Box Office

November 5, 2012

After a few lackluster weekends at the box office, it looks like fall has another smash with Disney’s new animated video-game comedy Wreck It Ralph. The well-reviewed film is not only a front-runner for an Animated Picture Oscar nom, but it took in a bigger than expected $49 million. It held off another strong debut from Denzel Washington‘s fantastic and Oscar worthy new drama Flight which pulled in $25 million. That is a giant number for a studio drama these days by the way and deservedly so. I gave the film an “A” grade… The final new film debuting this week was Universal’s action film The Man With the Iron Fists starring Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu and writer/director RZA which opened to a blah $ 8 million…. For more info on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

Safe House rises to the top as the newbies struggle at the Box Office

February 20, 2012

Over the four day Presidents Weekend Holiday, audiences declared their love for violence and Denzel Washington as his action thriller, Safe House costarring Ryan Reynolds, rose a notch to the top of the box office. It took in another $28 million for a two week take of $82 million. That’s good news for the expensive film (a reported $85 million production budget and that’s before marketing costs) which now looks like it can turn a little profit…. Definitely turning a profit is last week’s chart topper, The Vow, which cost only $30 million and has now amassed $ 88 million. Both films (and Journey 2) beat the three newcomers as Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider sequel landed an ok $25.7 million while the Reese Witherspoon/Tom Hardy/Chris Pine action comedy This Means War opened to just $22 million. We’ll see if either can turn a profit depending onhow they hold up in the weeks ahead. The final new entry was the Oscar nominated Japanese animated feature The Secret World of Arriety which opened to a paltry $ 8 million. Luckily it has made a ton outside the U.S…. For more on these numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

The Box Office Pledges its love for “The Vow”

February 12, 2012

Just a few days before Valentine’s Day, moviegoers declared their love for The Vow as the new romantic tearjerker beat 3 other new releases for the top of the box office chart. Pulling in a big $41.7 million, the film starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum way over performed and looks to have a great run ahead of it, especially with Vday on Tuesday…. It wasn’t the only good news as the three other films also opened well. Most notably, the Ryan Reynolds/Denzel Washington action film Safe House (which I gave a “B” grade to) opened in second with a strong $39 million. Following in third was the sequel family film Journey 2: the Mysterious Island with $27.5 million while the 3D version of Star Wars: the Phantom Menace took in $23 million. All in all, it was a huge weekend for Hollywood at the turnstiles. For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

Megamind is still Unstoppable at the Box Office

November 15, 2010

The title of the new Denzel Washington/Chris Pine action is Unstoppable. However, the film didn’t quite live up to that claim as the Will Ferrell toon Megamind made it two weeks at the top of the box office pulling in another $30 for a two-week take of $90 million. Instead, Unstoppable opened in second with a good $23.5 million and could hold well in the weeks ahead as many Washington films do. Opening to more mediocre results were the atrocious new sci-fi mess Skyline with $11.6 million and the fun new comedy Morning Glory which netted $9.6 million (for a total of $12 million since opening Wednesday). I’d day Glory could hold up in the weeks ahead as more mature audiences may still discover it, but Skyline will most likely collapse next week. Still performing well in limited release was the Oscar contender 127 Hours with the biggest per screen average of the weekend at over $20,000 a screen on only 22 screens. For full box office details, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.
