“Argo” Surprises at the SAG Awards

There were actually a few surprises at tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards and the biggest one was in the top category of Best Film Ensemble where Argo upset the supposed front-runners Les Miserables and Silver Linings Playbook. With this win, Argo continues to dominate the awards circuit and I’m declaring it unstoppable to win Best Picture at the Oscars next month… The other surprises came with Downton Abbey’s win in the Drama Ensemble category over Homeland, Bryan Cranston defeating Homeland‘s Damian Lewis, and a shocker win for Tina Fey…. Going back to the film categories Daniel Day-Lewis and Anne Hathaway continued their reign while Jennifer Lawrence beat out her chief rival Jessica Chastain in what continues to be a very tight Best Actress race. The Supporting Actor race also remains very exciting as Tommy Lee Jones won his first big award of the season giving us 3 different winners in this category this season following Philip Seymour Hoffman at the Critics Choice Awards and Christoph Waltz at the Golden Globes. It’s Time for my Big Bold 2013 SAG Award Winner Predictions

This weekend, awards season keeps trucking along with PGA Awards and the SAG Awards. I, of course, am incredibly excited for the SAG Awards since I actually get to vote for them as a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild for over 10 years now. It’s always a fun show and one where actors support and applaud one another, and yes, actors love to do that… Anywho, the show airs on Sunday on TBS and could feature some big upsets in the film categories and the TV races are pretty wide open. So, just who do I think will and should win? Take a look at my predictions below. Then, head back here on Sunday night for all the winners from the 2013 SAG Awards. (* And also note four films sent actual dvds to the ENTIRE giant SAG/AFTRA membership guild which certainly improves their chances. Those films were Argo, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook. The latter of those films has been pushing, advertising and knocking the industry over the head like crazy begging for awards too, so it might actually pay off…)

They’re Here~ My Big Bold 2013 Golden Globe WINNER Predictions!

Sunday night brings what NBC claims is the biggest party of the year in Hollywood, The Golden Globe Awards and no doubt, it’s always a good time. Homeland, Game Change and Modern Family Grab all the Emmy Love

Sorry for the delay in posting the winners of last night’s Emmy Awards, but I just got back into town from the Cinema Diverse Palm Springs International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival where my short Dirty Talk premiered! So, I just watched the show, but I have all the winners for you below. It was business as usual on the Comedy side with Modern Family three-peating as Comedy Series while its stars Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen both captured their second wins in the Supporting Categories. Lead Comedy honors went to Julia Louis Dreyfuss and in a bit of an upset Jon Cryer. On the drama front, Mad Men lost Drama Series after 4 years of dominating that category with Homeland pulling off a surprise win. Homeland also won Acting honors for Clare Danes and Damian Lewis (another shocker) while Mad Men went home empty-handed and broke the record for most losses in a year by a show as it went 0 for 17. Supporting Drama kudos went to Aaron Paul and Maggie Smith. In the TV Movie/Miniseries race, Julianne Moore and Game Change prevailed while Hatfields and McCoys landed two acting honors for Kevin Costner and Tom Berenger. Jessica Lange grabbed the only big win for American Horror Story of the night in the Supporting Actress race in that field. On the reality front, The Amazing Race won again (9 times out of 10 now!) while Tom Bergeron beat out the massively more deserving Cat Deeley for Host honors. They’re Here… My Big Bold 2012 Emmy WINNER Predictions…

Sunday night is TV’s biggest night as the Emmy Awards are announced on ABC in a ceremony hosted by a nominee himself, the hilarious Jimmy Kimmel… If history is any indication, Mad Men and Modern Family will repeat as the Drama and Comedy winners. However, I have a feeling we are in for a shakeup this year, especially on the Drama side. It’s the most competitive year in ages with four drama series all boasting a strong shot to win while we should see some new comedy acting winners as well… With that said, take a look at my big bold Emmy winner predictions below and watch the big show Sunday night!

 

My Big Bold 2012 Emmy Award Winner Predictions~

* this category is fierce. I feel like Mad Men will finally lose the crown, but I won’t be surprised if it grabs one more victory. However, Abbey appeals to all demos of the voting group and should prevail over the classic but violent and dark Bad. If those three all split the vote, the very deserving Homeland or the big winner from the Creative Arts ceremony, Game of Thrones, could pull an upset.

Last night, the critics really had their say as the 2nd Annual Critic’s Choice Television Awards named their winners for the past TV season. Winning two awards apiece were Homeland (which took Best Drama and Actress for Clare Danes), Breaking Bad, Sherlock, Parks & Recreation and Modern Family. Big surprises were found in Community‘s win for Best Comedy Series and The Voice winning Reality Competition show… I’m especially happy for the wins for Amy Poehler and Cat Deeley by the way…. Tonight is Going to be a Game Changer….

I never thought I’d say the following words: I’m really excited to see Sarah Palin tonight…. Now, before you go all crazy on me (cuz yes, I think she’s an ignorant, hateful moronic mess too people), I’m just talking about the “Sarah Palin” played by glorious four time Oscar nominee Julianne Moore in tonight’s HBO film Game Change. The incredibly talented Moore plays the Republican V.P. candidate to Oscar nominee Ed Harris‘s John McCain in a movie from the folks who brought you the fantastic political film Recount. This one also stars two-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson and looks like it will be an incisive, fascinating, humbling, hilarious and exciting look at the rise of this polarizing woman played to perfection by the sure to be Emmy-nominated Moore. An Underperforming “Cowboys” eecks out a win over “The Smurfs”

So, I head out-of-town for a few days, and when I return, Hollywood has gone a little crazy. How else to explain The Smurfs almost overtaking the highly touted Cowboys & Aliens at the box office this weekend. Well, for one, audiences loved the Smurfs which surprisingly overperformed opening to $35.6 million.  And secondly, Cowboys couldn’t match expectations, got bad reviews and poor audience scores and just narrowly won the weekend with $36.4 million. (That was a full $10 million under most already low-balled projections). The road ahead for Cowboys looks very rough considering its ginormous price tag and will likely give Universal two stinkers in a row after Larry Crowne. At least they had the massive success of Bridesmaids and Fast Five earlier this summer. As for The Smurfs, watch for this family friendly film to hold up well in the weeks ahead. The same could be said for the other opening film this weekend, the lovely romantic comedy Crazy Stupid Love with Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore and Emma Stone that opened to a good $19.1 million…. Elsewhere at the box office, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 officially became the highest grossing film in the series this weekend both domestically and internationally. First Look~ Crazy Stupid Love!

Emmy nominee and Golden Globe winner Steve Carrell is about to finish his run on NBC’s The Office on April 28th with a super sized episode that will tell us what happens to the one and only Michael Scott… However, you won’t have to wait long to see Carrell again as he’ll be appearing in one of the most anticipated comedies of the summer Crazy Stupid Love. This romantic comedy features Carrell dealing with a broken marriage to Oscar nominee Julianne Moore and learning how to date again with lessons from a young playboy in the form of Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling. Other big names in the cast include Golden Globe nominee Emma Stone, Golden Globe winner Kevin Bacon and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei. The film which opens July 29th looks like it could be a breakout hit among a sizable audience and actually a good movie to boot… Besides that, there’s Gosling’s abs… which are pretty much ridiculous…. Halle Berry goes Crazy for Oscar

She won an Oscar for her dramatic and emotional work in Monster’s Ball and now, Halle Berry, is aiming for a bookend. In her new film, Frankie & Alice, which she co-produced, Berry plays a woman struggling with multiple personality disorder. Judging from the trailer for this psychological thriller, Berry looks like she will be a strong contender for this year’s race. Unfortunately, it’s perhaps the most crowded Best Actress race in history (or at least in the last few decades). You see you have front-runners Annette Bening (The Kids are Alright), Julianne Moore (The Kids Are Alright), Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) and Natalie Portman (Black Swan) to contend with. Then comes another tier of deserving ladies including Lesley Manville (Another Year), Hilary Swank (Conviction), Diane Lane (Secretariat), Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Sally Hawkins (Made in Dagenham) along with wild cards Tilda Swinton (I Am Love), Naomi Watts (Fair Game), and Reese Witherspoon (How Do You Know?). We’ll see how Halle fairs in the weeks ahead as the film hits theatres in late December. I think she’s a lock for a Golden Globe Drama nom, but may slip through the cracks at Oscar time unless she does some serious campaigning (which she’s already doing).
