“The Avengers” Lords Over the MTV Movie Awards

April 17, 2013

imagesSunday night was all about some super heroes and a super silly lady as The Avengers took home 3 awards including Movie of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards while host Rebel Wilson won two statues. Wilson and her Pitch Perfect cohorts not only performed on the show but they won Musical Moment over Oscar winner Anne Hathaway and Wilson took home the Breakthrough Award. The other big winner of the night was Silver Linings Playbook which landed three awards including Actor and Actress for Bradley Cooper and Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence… I have to say I was a bit dismayed that the brilliant films Les Miserables, Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Dark Knight Rises all went home empty-handed, but hey, I’ll admit I’m a bit older than the MTV voting demographic unfortunately, lol … For more on the show and the awards, head to the MTV site here and take a look at all the winners below.

It’s All about Django, Jennifer and Ted at the MTV Movie Award Nominations

March 6, 2013

Django-Unchained-wallpapers-1920x1200-4This year, it looks like the MTV Movie Awards are looking to class up the joint a bit as they nominated several Oscar winners and nominees among their top choices for this year’s ceremony. Django Unchained, which won two Oscars, grabbed 7 nominations including Best Movie where it goes up against Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook plus The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Ted. The later film, a some-what lowbrow stoner comedy, is also up for 7 awards right in line with MTV’s usual choices… The other big contender is Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence who is up for 5, yes 5, awards including Best Female Performance against fellow Oscar winner Anne Hathaway. Take a look at all the nominees below which also feature some of my favorite films (Perks of Being a Wallflower, Les Mis, Skyfall) and performers (Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Emma Watson, Rebel Wilson, Jessica Chastain and Marion Cotillard to name a few). Voting is open now, and watch for the MTV Movie Awards airing in April on MTV.

The Hunger Games wins Big at a Boring MTV Movie Awards

June 4, 2012

I almost forgot the MTV Movie Awards were on tonight as I really don’t watch anything on MTV anymore. Add that to the fact that the show is always ridiculously predictable (hello, the winners are notified before hand) and it has become the annual Twilight awards for the past few years. Luckily these fan-voted awards mixed it up a bit giving the far superior film The Hunger Games several awards. However, the awful latest Twilight installment still won Best Movie and the most annoying and terrible actress on Earth Kristen Stewart was there to accept the award and make me want to jump off a cliff…. She was only one bad part of this boring and not particularly funny show hosted by a lazy Russell Brand… The two saviors were the preview of the awesome The Dark Knight Rises and the welcome presence of the always lovely, funny, and gracious Emma Stone who won the “Trailblazer” award… For all the deets on the show, head to MTV here and check out the winners below…

It’s Katniss vs. Kristin as The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids lead the MTV Movie Award Nominations

May 1, 2012

There was some serious girl power on display with yesterday’s announcement of this year’s contenders for the MTV Movie Awards. While the usual competitor Twilight entry is in the race again as Breaking Dawn got a nod for Best Movie, the shocker was that it only got 2 nods. Instead, the female centric movies The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids each towered over the competition with 8 nods while The Help grabbed 4 and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo grabbed 3. The other big nominee was the final Harry Potter film which landed in 6 races. Take a look at all the nominees below and I have to say MTV has picked a much better crop with these contenders than in most of the past decade. For more on the show which takes place on June 3 and to vote, head to MTV.com here.

The Twi-hards own the MTV Movie Awards… and Xtina!

June 7, 2010

Last night was all about Twilight at the MTV Movie Awards where the sequel, Twilight: New Moon, swept the outrageous awards show for the second year in a row. On the one hand, it should be no surprise that it won everything because the Twi-tards are crazy obsessive in their support for this franchise, but it’s still rather annoying that the iminently unlikable and untalented Kristen Stewart wins best actress for it over Oscar winner Sandra Bullock. At least, Bullock picked up the “Generation Award” for her work. She also gave a great speech and received some plaudits from her funny costars Betty White and Bradley Cooper. Oh, and yeah, she kissed Scarlett Johanson, yada yada…. I guess it’s also interesting to note that New Moon demolished Avatar beating it in all of its categories. Apparently the all time highest grossing movie isn’t so loved after all. (And um, if you look at attendance numbers it is no where near being the most successful movie ever. It lags far behind Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, E.T. and others.) The show also featured comedian Aziz Ansari giving it his best shot as host. Unfortunately the hilarious star of Parks and Recreation suffered the fate of most hosts of this show: having to perform to a somewhat indifferent audience who wasn’t listening. We also got a lot of stupid comedy bits from the likes of Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Adam Sandler and his buddies and a terrible dance number from Tom Cruise (as his Tropic Thunder alter ego) with J Lo. I guess most of the audience was amused by the last one. Me, not so much. I did enjoy Christina Aguilera’s no holds barred performance though and Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry (who sang some of her song live even) were decent. For all of the info on the show, check out MTV’s website. Your full list of winners is below:

Best Female Performance: Kristen Stewart (New Moon)
Best Breakout Star: Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air)
Best Scared as Sh*! Performance: Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer’s Body)
Best Kiss: Stewart and Robert Pattinson (New Moon)
Best WTF Moment: Ken Jeong (The Hangover)
Best Villain: Tom Felton (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince)
Biggest Badass Star: Rain (Um, who?)
Best Fight: Beyonce and Ali Larter (Obsessed)
Best Male Performance: Pattinson
Best Comedic Performance: Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover)
Best Movie: Twilight~ New Moon
Generation Award: Sandra Bullock

And here’s Christina Aguilera’s performance of “Bionic/Not Myself Tonight/WooHoo”

MTV Movie Award Nominations!

The most derivative and often the most fun Awards show in the biz, The MTV Movie Awards, just announced their nominations. As usual, the teen favorites are the frontrunners with Twilight New Moon, Dear John and Avatar leading the pack. This year the show will be hosted by the hilarious Aziz Ansari from TV’s criminally underrated Parks and Recreation. It will also feature a dynamic performance by Christina Aguilera and presenters including Bradley Cooper, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Jessica Biel, Steve Carrell, Diddy and more. Check out the full list of nominees below, log on to MTV.com to vote and please don’t let the Twi-hards take control of the results. (There are some worthy competitors here: Sandra Bullock, Gabourey Sidibe, Anna Kendrick, Sharlto Copley. Plus the incomparable Betty White is up for a nom! So vote!)
