“The Hobbit” Fights off Some Disappointing Newbies at the Box Office

December 24, 2012

Jack-Reacher-PosterPeter Jackson‘s holiday behemoth The Hobbit held onto the top spot at the pre-Christmas box office in its second week with a good $36. 7 million bringing its total come to $149 million and much more to come. The Hobbit easily fended off a quartet of new releases that all proved disappointing. Opening best was the Tom Cruise action flick Jack Reacher with a lackluster $15.6 million. We’ll see if it can hold up well as audiences were generally pleased with the film despite the miscasting of Cruise. (Hello, the character of Reacher in the book is 6’5 and blonde~ two things Cruise aint, but I digress.)… Arriving with a thud in third was the atrocious new Judd Apatow “comedy” This is 40 with $12 million. The audience response was poor as well which does not bode well for its future. I gave this heaping piece of unfunny crap a “D” grade… it did beat out the surprisingly funny road trip comedy The Guilt Trip with Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogan which only took in $5.3 million. Trip (which I gave a “B” grade to) will have to work real hard after Christmas to even approach breaking even… The final new film to implode upon arrival was the 3D release of Monsters Inc with just $5 million. It was outpaced by the long running Rise of the Guardians which has had the best legs of all films this season after a wonky start…. For more on all the new releases and big grosses for the limited debuts of the brilliant Oscar contenders The Impossible and Zero Dark Thirty, head to Box Office Mojo here. The Brand New Trailer for “The Hobbit”!

September 19, 2012

As most of you know, the movie I’m most looking forward to this winter is the big Oscar buzz musical Les Miserables. However, coming in a close second is the first installment in a new trilogy from Lord of the Rings Oscar-winning mastermind Peter Jackson, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The film hits theaters December 14th and will no doubt be a blockbuster. The question is will it be awards bait like the Rings trilogy or just a crowd pleaser? Well, taking a look at the new trailer, it seems like it could fulfill both tasks. It also looks like it has a lot more humor than the Rings films. Check out the new film trailer below. This one stars Martin Freeman and Richard Armitrage alongside Rings players Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Oscar winner Cate Blanchett and Oscar nominee Sir Ian McKellan. Then, head here for all the info on The Hobbit.

First Look~ The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

December 21, 2011

No sooner did I get home from seeing one of the most anticipated films of this year (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo which was awesome and gets an “A” grade from me by the way), than the trailer for one of the most anticipated films of 2012 hit the web. Check out the wonderful new clip for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey below. The film, which comes from Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, brings back faves from that trilogy like Gandalf (Oscar nominee Sir Ian McKellan) , Frodo (Elijah Wood), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Galadriel (Oscar winner Cate Blanchett) and of course Gollum (Andy Serkis) while it also introduces a host of new hobbits on a great adventure. I can’t wait… but I’ll have to… Because, Hobbit doesn’t hit theatres til Dec. 14th of next year…
