“Argo” Wins Best Picture at a Surprisingly Unsurprising Oscars

On what was a night many said there could be several big upsets, tonight’s Academy Awards was actually rather predictable. With only Christoph Waltz beating out Tommy Lee Jones and Robert DeNiro in the Supporting Actor race, most of the other winners were pretty easy to guess. Argo took Picture, Editing and Adapted Screenplay while Daniel Day-Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway won their respective races. Ang Lee topped Speilberg for Best Director while Quentin Tarantino won Original Screenplay for Django Unchained. One big surprise was a tie (only the 6th tie in Oscar history) for Sound Editing between Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall… Take a look at all the winners below and watch here for more on the show, Seth MacFarlane’s decent hosting debut and the amazing performances by Jennifer Hudson and the cast of Les Miserables tomorrow.

They’re Here~ My Big Bold 2013 Oscar WINNER Predictions

It’s been one heck of a topsy-turvy Oscar season. Since September, there seemed to be a different film out in front each week with Lincoln, Les Miserables, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook all looking like the film to beat. However, after all of the Guild Awards (SAG, DGA, PGA) and the Golden Globes, it has become clear that Argo is the true front-runner and likely will win Best Picture. If it does, it will be the first film to do so without a Best Director nomination since Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. And it may also be one of the only wins the film takes home. It has a shot in Screenplay, Editing and Score, but we’ll see… There are other sure things but there are 3 big races totally up in the air and we may see the awards spread over several different films… So, just who do I think will win? It’s Time for my Big Bold 2013 SAG Award Winner Predictions

This weekend, awards season keeps trucking along with PGA Awards and the SAG Awards. I, of course, am incredibly excited for the SAG Awards since I actually get to vote for them as a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild for over 10 years now. It’s always a fun show and one where actors support and applaud one another, and yes, actors love to do that… Anywho, the show airs on Sunday on TBS and could feature some big upsets in the film categories and the TV races are pretty wide open. So, just who do I think will and should win? Take a look at my predictions below. Then, head back here on Sunday night for all the winners from the 2013 SAG Awards. (* And also note four films sent actual dvds to the ENTIRE giant SAG/AFTRA membership guild which certainly improves their chances. Those films were Argo, Les Miserables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook. The latter of those films has been pushing, advertising and knocking the industry over the head like crazy begging for awards too, so it might actually pay off…)

“Zero Dark Thirty” Tops the Box Office

On a weekend when its star Jessica Chastain won her first and much deserved Golden Globe Award and in its first weekend in national release, the controversial but brilliant thriller Zero Dark Thirty hit the top of the box office chart with $24 million. That brings the film’s total to $29 million with much more to come for this Oscar contender that I gave a “A” grade to…. Zero easily beat the two newcomers as the new horror spoof A Haunted House took in $ 18 million while the star-studded action drama Gangster Squad with Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin opened to an ok $16 million… The Oscar noms gave nice boosts to Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook while Globe winner Les Miserables topped $119 million and became the fifth biggest musical film in history surpassing Hairspray… For more on all the numbers, head to Box Office Mojo here and check out the new top ten below.

The Critic’s Choice Awards Spread the Love while Argo Upsets Lincoln.

All of the big contenders won at least one award at tonight’s Critic’s Choice Awards ceremony honoring the best films and performances according to the biggest critics group in the nation. The big surprise was Argo taking home Best Picture over supposed front-runner (and the biggest Oscar contender this morning) Lincoln. Not only did it win the biggest award of the night, but Ben Affleck also took home Best Director. It was the first of several awards I think Affleck will win this year despite his shocking omission at the Oscar nominations today…. In the acting categories Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln) and Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) continued to mow over the competition in the Lead Actor and Supporting Actress category. However, the two other acting categories are just gearing up with their horse races as Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) took home Lead Actress and Supporting Actor in very competitive fields. In fact Chastain held off her strongest competition, Jennifer Lawrence who nonetheless won three, yes three other awards tonight. Lawrence took home Actress in an Action Film, Actress in a Comedy and was part of the Best Ensemble award to Silver Linings Playbook. That last award was a bit of a shocker to me as I thought either Lincoln or Les Mis would take that one. (I still maintain that Les Mis will grab that Ensemble award at the SAG kudosfest at the end of the month though)…. Screenplay honors went to Django Unchained and Lincoln while Life of Pi, Skyfall and Anna Karenina won below the line categories. “Lincoln” Lords over the Oscar Nominations

Lincoln got a field best 12 Oscar nominations this morning in all the categories you would expect. Life of Pi, Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook and Argo were next in line in terms of multiple nominations… However, there were snubs and surprises all over the place… I’ll have a full analysis later today but for now check out the list of nominees below.

“Lincoln” and “Les Mis” Lead the BAFTA Noms

Lincoln continues its run as the Oscar front-runner as it pulled in 10 BAFTA nominations this morning ahead of Les Miserables and Life of Pi with 9 each and Skyfall with 8 (including Javier Bardem and Judi Dench in the Supporting Actor categories). The big surprise was the snub of Lincoln and Les Mis directors Steven Spielberg and Tom Hooper who both missed the cut… In fact, the story of the day is actually the other people snubbed by the British academy. Getting no love this morning were Denzel Washington, Naomi Watts, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert DeNiro who all didn’t make the cut…. So just who did? Take a look at the full list below which featured a surprisingly strong showing for Anna Karenina and a huge shocker with Ben Affleck in the Best Actor category. Winners will be announced just before the Oscar ceremony next month.

Ben Affleck plays with the Big Kids at the DGA Noms

Ben Affleck officially got an invitation to the big kids table as he grabbed his first DGA Nomination for his critical and commercial hit third film Argo. Affleck is the only first time nominee going against previous winners Tom Hooper (previous winner for The King’s Speech), Ang Lee (wins for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain), Kathryn Bigelow (won for The Hurt Locker) and Steven Spielberg who now has 11 nominations and 3 wins (The Color Purple, Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan)…. Left off the Director’s Guild list were David O’Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) and Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained). They’re Here~ My Big Bold 2013 Oscar Nomination Predictions!!

2012 was a fantastic year for quality films and up to ten of them could compete for Best Picture. I could easily pick ten deserving favorites and the Academy will likely fill ten slots as well (they will nominate anywhere from 5 to 10 depending on some strange math). However, some great films may be lost in the shuffle and there will definitely be some actors out in the cold. The Supporting Actor race is ridiculously overflowing with wonderful potential contenders… So, while I hold out hope for two of my favorites, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Impossible, to land in multiple categories, I may have to accept that they only get one nom apiece. I do expect my favorite film Les Miserables to fight with Lincoln for the most nominations while the brilliant Zero Dark Thirty and Argo should also pop up all over the place. And watch for Skyfall to become the first Bond film to contend for the top prize and more. But just where will those films land?
